I think Joe has already shown a better aptitude for personnel than Jeff Ireland has, and in the current set up, the GM can't fire him anyway. The only person that can is Stephen Ross, and I have a feeling that is unlikely. If the Dolphins keep Joe, they have to hire a GM that can work with him and share the same personnel philosophy/team building philosophy with him. No more giving one trick pony receivers big contracts and such.
Since Ireland has 100% control over player personnel decisions at this time, I'm not sure how you have come to the conclusion that Philbin has a better aptitude for personnel than Ireland does. The fact is that Philbin took the job with the understanding that Ireland would make all final personnel decisions for the Dolphins. That was the main reason Jeff Fischer didn't take the job with the Dolphins. He wanted final say over personnel decisions and Ross wouldn't agree to that. I agree that whoever the next GM is, has to be able to work with the head coach of the team. As I stated earlier though, if the Dolphins finish this season at 500 or below, I don't think that Philbin should feel that his job is secure. In that case, Ross should allow the next GM to make the final determination regarding Philbins job with the Dolphins. If the Dolphins win 9 or 10 games this year, I suspect that not only will Philbin return next year, but Ireland most likely will also return as the teams GM. If the team has a winning record and assuming the Martin investigation doesn't cause Ross to fire Ireland. I just don't see Ross firing Ireland after a winning season. Right now I see Philbin as a very average HC in the NFL and he hasn't proved at this time he deserves any kind of special consideration if a new GM is hired after this season. Perhaps he will eventually become a very good HC, but that is still to be shown. I have no problem with Philbin remaining for at least another year if that is what the new GM wants. I just think the next GM has to feel comfortable with the head coach and if he doesn't feel comfortable with Philbin in that position, the new GM should be able to hire whomever he wants to for the position, IMO.
Here's where I disagree. Why should we keep him if we go 9-7, but fire him if we go 7-9? Coaching doesn't make that much of a difference. Miami's problems are personnel oriented, not coaching.
Gary Kubiak fired as Houston Texans head coach http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap20...ary-kubiak-fired-as-houston-texans-head-coach For those speaking of adding him on the Dolphins coaching staff. He is available.
no thanks...i'd take kyle shanahan as oc if he and his dad are out in washington though. schaub has been garbage ever since kyle shanahan left the texans. its not a coincidence.
Gary Kubiak and Mike Sherman are tight so I could see this working. At this point I sense that Sherman may be getting into Dan Henning territory as far as his interest in retirement goes. He's pushing 60 years old which isn't terribly old but not terribly young either and he's being brutalized in the press and even behind his back by coaches and players and people in the building. He knows Philbin will never fire him. But that may only make him more willing to bow out gracefully rather than put his friend in that kind of awkward position. He used to be the guy in charge of Joe Philbin and now he's the weak link to where he's having Joe Philbin try and protect him from criticism? Some guys have a little too much pride to handle that idea really well. Anyway where Kubiak comes in is Sherman may be convinced that handing the keys over to a Gary Kubiak means continuity for Ryan Tannehill (whom Sherman cares for) and also it could mean his son in law Zac Taylor gets to retain his job as QB Coach. I could see everyone involved working out some kind of gentleman's agreement that way. You have to keep in mind Steve Ross is going to want to see change if the Dolphins miss the playoffs and Philbin will be lucky if the axe swing doesn't get his neck too. It won't be Philbin's idea to fire Sherman but Sherman could still feel the bite of the blade on his neck regardless.
Because if he goes 7-9 again, that will mean he has a 14-18 with a team that was suppose to have more talent this year than they have had in several years. I disagree that coaching doesn't make much difference. In fact I think an excellent coach can make a huge difference in the NFL. Hopefully the Dolphins will end this season with a winning record but if they don't, I would have no problem with Philbin being replaced, along with Ireland. I only care about wins when it comes to the Dolphins and two consecutive losing seasons under a new HC just wouldn't do it for me.
Seeing Sexy Rexy on the Dolphins sideline blowing up the Jets offense would be as close to poetic justice as I could imagine.
You make it sound as if Joe Philbin had absolutely 0 say in the addition of Mike Wallace. I remember an interview with Philbin being asked why Wallace and not Jennings. Philbin's response very much implied that he had a very major say in choosing Wallace. I'd say the much more believable scenario was Ireland asking Philbin who he preferred and he chose Wallace rather than Ireland just going out and getting whoever he damn well wanted without consulting with the HC and OC first
I highly doubt Joe Philbin was on board with this decision, and his public statements are simply his way of not publicly disagreeing with with Jeff.
Here's the article. Those quotes don't sound like just public sentiment. Sounds to me like they were the ones that made the decision after a ton of research. Sounds like they researched themselves into Wallace http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap10...e-philbin-why-mike-wallace-over-greg-jennings
I think any GM would totally ask his coach which one he wanted in this situation considering the coach just had Jennings for 4 years under his tutelage...if he didn't your right he should be fired, but until I see something different I cannot expect a GM who are always concerned with success rates would ignore his coach on this..doesn't make any sense unless you really think this guy is a complete moron.
Well alrighty then...didn't see that, but there ya go..thinking the opposite in this situation seems odd not matter your level of dissatisfaction with Ireland.
I like the idea, posted thread in Club asking about replacing Philbin with Kubiak. As for mobility, Tannehill played WR several years at Texas A&M and seems to throw pretty well on the run. Give me Kubiak for Sherman, yes.
Absolute Dream scenario for me. Then you could keep Philbin and bring in a GM who works better with HC, OC, DC and is a better talent evaluator (for example can spot an OL in any round other than the first).
Nothing more than coach speak. I've seen the numbers. I know that Mike Wallace is a HORRIBLE fit for a timing based passing game. I respect Joe Philbin enough to believe that he would also know this. Jeff Ireland is a moron though, so I have no doubt that he would do this. He did sign two linebackers that can't cover, and he also stuck Joe with a left tackle that couldn't play.
Not only was that coach speak but it sounds terrifyingly as if that chart (which Philbin himself did not create) was more the basis for his positive opinion than film study.
You know what's interesting? Mike Wallace is averaging 47.8 yards per reception on 20+ yard completions. That ties his career high. He's also averaging 7.2 yards after the catch on these receptions. That is a new career high. We have fans that want to act like Ryan is the worst down the field thrower in football though, even though YAC average is a function of quarterback accuracy.
Opposites attract? You're probably right, Philbin isn't a strong enough HC to keep Rex under control. But Kubiak as OC and Rex Ryan as DC would be a dream combo IMHO. But you would need a HC with the chutzpah to handle two such strong personalities. Anyway I doubt either one will go back to being a coordinator, both will likely want a HC position again, and likely will get one.
Honestly, they probably could work together. Joe delegates, so he isn't going to have his hand in everything. He's letting Mike Sherman and Kevin Coyle coach the way they see fit and isn't stepping in and stepping on their toes. Because of that, Rex Ryan probably wouldn't have an issue working with Joe. Heck, he worked with Brian Billick for a while.
I would honestly say YAC on deep throws down field is more a product of how much space a WR has between himself and the defender, with accuracy contributing obviously. Also even if you completely disagree, your point makes absolutely no sense and is horribly flawed. First off it is easier to maintain a higher average with fewer catches. Seconfly it says nothing about the chances missed which are where the accuracy issues have been. Don't bother refuting this. I just wanted to point out how flawed and miskeading your use of statistics is. I don't care what you have to say because you're yhe type of person I dont waste my time with, because you dont give a rats *** about anyone's views but your own.
Can't believe Keith would miskead us like that. Seconfly, Keith you should not reply to this because we all know your miskeading us.
Wait, so Philbin is lying? He didn't break down all of Wallace's film? Ha ha ha. That ranks right up there with Jake Long can't play LT and Ryan Mallett is a franchise QB. Pardon me but I'll take coach speak over never played never coached but I'm smarter than them all and any coach who disagrees with me is clearly just hiding the fact that he agrees with me speak, any day of the week.
Never said anything about Philbin lying. Nor did Philbin say anything about he personally breaking down Wallace's film. But oh sick burn. Ryan Mallett yo. Member that one dood you said that one time might have like a 40% chance of being a good NFL QB, that hasn't really started yet cuz he's been Tom Brady's backup? Hah, tha wuz so funny yo. Does bringing up irrelevant sh-t like that make your ego feel good? I hope it does because it's not making your dick any less small.
Thats cool, the insults don't bother me, I wish the mods would butt out and let grown men have grown men conversations, but that's just me. You love to rant about how Ireland is a hack but had he listened to you he'd have been rightfully fired a long time ago and bc he knew better than to take your advice we have a QB to build around for the first time since 13 retired. That might invoke a little humility in the average fan but you and KB are clearly not average fans. You guys spout nonsense and when it's proven wrong you invent more nonsense to cover your tracks, it's quite amusing. The latest installment is that Philbin didn't do his homework, didn't watch film etc on Wallace, he must be a dumbass to not agree with you after all. And he'd be lucky to not get fired. Ha ha ha. Ross is on record saying he's behind Philbin, must be owner speak right? Philbin days he researched Wallace's every catch, drop, route etc, must be coach speak right? Admitting you've erred makes you more knowledgeable not less. You might figure that out some day.
Many owners say they are behind their coaches only to fire them at the end. Since Philbin was Ross's pick, that's what Philbin has going for him and it's huge. Then again it can all change at the end of the season. Can we call this owner speak?
I'm pretty much done treating people with respect that really don't deserve any. Or giving my time to people who don't deserve that either. I'd argue with what you wrote here, but liars and miscreants aren't worth the attention.
Philbin won 7 games in just first year despite having a skeleton crew on offense, this year his team is in the thick of the playoff hunt so certainly there is no on the field cause for termination. Then you have people saying he could be fired for the Martin vs Incognito stuff, that's laughable IMO but to each is own. Ross came out an said Philbin was his guy if that doesn't convince you then nothing I say will either.
What about this guy for OC??? http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...han-has-decided-to-stop-working-with-his-dad/ But the way the Phins are currently playing Sherman will probably stay anyway...
