I mentioned in another thread that Joe Philbin was using Catapult Sports GPS tracking devices in the players during training camp and in practices to monitor work load and other such things. This is cutting edge stuff, folks. Player tracking data will be the coup de gras of advance analysis going forward. I've been a big proponent of the NBA's sportVU technology. The NFL currently doesn't allow tracking cameras in NFL stadiums because they feel it will compromise the integrity of the game for some reason.

The future of this kind of data is really unlimited, and Joe Philbin is the first person associated with the Dolphins in a long time that is actually ahead of the game when it comes to the change of times. This data has the chance to revolutionize injury analysis, performance analysis, and tactical analysis going forward, and I think the use of this data may also enhance college scouting and player evaluation down the road.

I think we are already seeing some results of this technology. Because of this technology, Joe Philbin decided to give the Dolphins team Thursdays off, which goes against traditional NFL thought. The data that was presented from previous studies shows that teams that lost and had poor offensive performances on Sundays typically had very physical practices on Thursdays.

The data also shows that 80% of practice time was spent just standing around, and this data helps the coaching staff pace the practice to where they can get the most work in possible with as little standing around time as possible. This data can also show them when they need to increase practice time vs tapering practice time.

Right now, the Dolphins have a very fresh team. There are a few minor injuries, but by an large, this is a relatively healthy team going into a December playoff push.

Where I think this data can take this team to a new level is in play design and play calling. If you can monitor a player's acceleration, deceleration, and change of direction ability and get a metric for it, you can use that data to design plays to take advantage of that ability.

As far as scouting goes, this data can be used to measure such things as a receivers catch radius, the angle of bend a pass rusher uses when he is running the arc, how much force an offensive tackle's hand punch has, how quickly an offensive lineman gets from point A to point B....etc. It will completely revolutionize scouting as a whole, virtually minimizing the margin of error that comes from too much film study.

This is exciting stuff, and the fact that Joe Philbin is embracing this technology makes me believe that he is absolutely the right man to lead the Dolphins going forward.

Hell ya! Thats awesome stuff. Is this the same idea that the EPL and other soccer leagues use to track the distance traveled by every player in a game?

Would have been interesting to see that tracking data of the Dolphins D on the last play of the game against the Steelers.

Might have looked like just a set of non-moving blips.

Considering we are used to coaches stuck in 1986.....it's nice to see someone inovative enough to start his own trends and be his own coach!

I don't agree with the idea they took the last play off. That is ridiculous and not what this thread is about. They were trying to keep the play in front of them and had several shots at tackles. The bigger issue was the tackling. Again, not what this thread is about.

Lighten up. Just having fun with it.

(But, several did take the play off, when the ball got back to Brown's side several didn't run back to ensure coverage they just jogged thinking, "we got this").

I'm not mad or anything lol its cool. I was more mad at....not sure but it might have been Grimes or Carroll who missed the initial tackle, and Clemons for taking a bad route. Though he did just enough.

I think behind the scenes Philbin is a lot more innovative and abstract in his thinking than we give him credit for.

When hired, Carl Peterson stated it was the best coaching interview he'd every taken part in.

This is why I don't understand the "Fire Philbin" logic. There is just something about this guy that seems so untapped. I just see some Bill Walsh in his thought process.

As most on here know, I'm a proponent of cleaning house. Obviously, I don't think that's the case barring a total collapse the next three weeks.

I posted this in Club yesterday, but I want to like Joe Philbin. I think his philosophies are generally sound. It's the staff around him that drags this team down. There's a reason they're 7-6 and not 9-4 or 10-3, and it goes beyond OL play.

Stuff like this is encouraging to read about, and it gives me some hope for the future of this team. I'm still not sure about him working together with Jeff Ireland, or some of his assistants (i.e. Sherman/Taylor, Turner and Coyle), but if Miami were to make those changes; I'd have a better outlook heading into 2014 than I did going into this season.

    Progress, right?

I think the logic derives from what appears to be unwillingness to change when certain things aren't working and certain tendencies that the team has shown. I also think it wouldn't be unfair to question his ability to be a leader of men. Will players "run through a brick wall" for him?

In terms of intelligence, I think Philbin is a very smart guy. The fact that he is incorporating these technologies does not surprise me. But being a head coach entails a lot more. Personally I'm on the fence with Philbin. These last 3 games are going to say a lot IMO.

I've been happy with Philbin so far. In my opinion we still don't have the talent to really spread open our offense yet. I think his most questionable decision has been Sherman as an OC. However I've seen more player development in two seasons than the entire Wanny/Sparano eras combined.

We can only speculate how players feel. We see the post game speech and little else.

Great KB. nd we haven't even scratched the surface of its potential. Coaches will love it as a coaching tool as well.

For example, imagine that after a game you can sit Mike Wallace down in front of a large screen TV. On that screen you show a slide of the play design, and the route he is meant to run. Then you say, "Let's see what you ran." and you OVERLAY the tracking device line showing EXACTLY what Wallace did on the play. Wallace can immediately see where his line is not the same as the route's line. He can see, indisputably, what he is and is not doing. It removes a ton of grey area. Now add acceleration, angle and deceleration data and you can even tell if he came off the line properly, executed his feint before the cut properly, cut on the route at the proper time, speed, depth and angle. Then he can take that coaching and improve, seeing the results on a screen in front of him week after week in a way that is easier to judge than just visuals of a guy running on grass.

As a coaching tool there is nothing like it for accurate feedback to help players understand what they are really doing on that field.

Furthermore, I think the defense was gassed more than anything on that play. But Da Fins' post was funny.

As for the topic at hand. Really exciting and interesting. People love to act like Philbin is some bozo but the man has a brilliant mind. And the players and coaches absolutely buy into him.

I agree. Player development is a big key to coaching, IMO. Nolan Carroll, Olivier Vernon, Jimmy Wilson, Rishard Matthews, Charles Clay, Michael Egnew.....these are all players were who were liabilities on the field during the previous year who are now key contributors to the team. Credit goes to player development for that.

Someone close to the situation that I trust told me that he thinks Joe has a good feel for the pace of player development and is a strong teacher...the strongest teacher we have had in a long time in Miami.

In fact, I would say that coaching has much more of an effect on player development than it has on game day. Game day is all about player execution, IMO.

Very interesting use technology going on here. Ive read about this (rumored to be a feature on many of the "smart watches" now in development) and its a great forward-thinking application of a new technology. Ive also read that there are devices that can be worn on the wrist or arm that can track heart rate, body temperature, and can even estimate caloric output. I like how Philbin is running his show and using every resource available. I'm curious to know how many other teams do this.

One thing coaches can emphasize using this is yards after contact. If you track a receiver who catches then gets tackled straight away you can objectively point out to the receivers performance that he is not gaining yards after getting hit. Now you immediately see Hartline and Clay break tackles and gaining yards they haven;t before. Similarly you watch Thomas Miller got down after the first contact and this tracking system will show that so after being shown the data coaches have made it an emphasis hence results are being shown on the field recently.

What needs to improve I think are these screens that go for 2 yards. They need to be shown how the blocks down field are not as effective as they should be and also the WO is not also shaking off the initial hit.
