He'd be no stranger to the area since he went to the U. I haven't seen any interviews of him to see if someone his age could handle the local press one way or another.

The Martin saga is quiet now but far from done. When the team gets dragged down again this offseason what'll they do then, replace Jeff with Brian Gaine right before the draft? I hope Ross thinks proactively about the situation for once, even if Wells can't give him any clues about what he's found yet.

This organization hasn't been proactive about anything for years now. Everything since Parcells and his minions took over has been reactionary and it still is.

I know Wolf volunteered with the UM football program and was part of the recruiting staff. The guy was doing player evals at the age of 10.

I think he's done, okay. But I'm not sure I'm happy with okay. I've seen Schneider and Carroll assemble a dominant team in less years. I see us as a team with good to very good players, save for a few elites. Someone who will contend every year but doesn't dominate. And we contend because of Tannehill. Ireland teeters in that area where, if I'm confident another GM/regime will be an upgrade I fire him. I fully believe in his ability to find Hartlines and Clay's instead of Alshon Jeffrey's and Jimmy Grahams.

I agree. Ironically, the year we might make the playoffs will be the year he arguably has had his worst off season. The signings of Wallace, Ellerbe, and Wheeler have been horrible. And the way he has handled the line has been horrible, as well. But Tannehill could save his job.

Not that it matters to me but just for those worried about Irelands draft picks compared to a team we know has had success.

Bill Belichicks flop draft picks round 3 or better.

    1. Chad Jackson, WR, Florida – 2006 NFL Draft – Round 2 Pick 36

    2. Laurence Maroney, RB, Minnesota – 2006 Draft – Round 1 Pick 21

    3. Kevin O’Connell, QB, San Diego State – 2008 NFL Draft – Round 3 Pick 94

    4. Taylor Price, WR, Ohio – 2010 Draft – 3rd Round Pick 90

    5. Terrence Wheatley, CB, Colorado – 2008 Draft – Round 2 Pick 62

    6. Darius Butler, CB, UConn – 2009 Draft – 2nd Round Pick 41

    7. Tyrone McKenzie, LB, South Florida – 2009 Draft – 3rd Round Pick 97

    8. Brandon Tate, WR, North Carolina – 2009 Draft – 3rd Round Pick 83

    9. Brock Williams, CB, Notre Dame – 2001 NFL Draft – 3rd Round Pick 86

    10. Bethel Johnson, WR, Texas A&M – 2003 Draft – 2nd Round Pick 45

    11. Shawn Crable, OLB, Michigan – 2008 Draft – 3rd Round Pick 78

    12. Adrian Klemm, OT, Hawaii - 2000 Draft – 2nd Round Pick 46

Belechick has had many bad drafts 05-08 yielded just 2 starters in two years Mayo and Mankins
    06-07 were TOTAL busts.

P Ken Walter—38.6 yards per punt average for 2 seasons under Bill

The list of bad FA signings is to large for me to make.
    and don't forget
DT Albert Haynesworth lasted less than four months with the Patriots

Aarron Hernandez (113th overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft you can say failed in life.

    Just examples to think about.

Ireland is a nice guy when you ask former players that are thrown away like dirty laundy Bill could care less.

If that was Irelands list of fails could you imagine the sky is falling comments.

But Belichick is the leagues best coach. Ireland is a prick ;)

Belichick has managed a roster good enough, granted with Brady, to be AFC East dominant.

  9. I have been in the camp that has not viewed Ireland as a bad GM but just an average one. I have begun to come around and and now thinking he is a good GM. Not great but good. Above average.

My question is why should I not at least be reasonably satisfied with what he has built here so far?

I wouldn't include Butler. He is the Colts nickel back. I wouldn't include Tate. He is the Bengals return specialist. Both are good at their jobs. Bill just gave up on them too soon, or found someone better. It is more difficult to make the roster of a perennial playoff team than a mediocre team.

Thats why it's important to keep flipping acorns.

Brandon Tate, WR, North Carolina – 2009 Draft – 3rd Round Pick 83
The Patriots took a chance on Tate in the third round despite the fact that he was still recovering from a torn ACL that he had suffered in college. Tate was immediately behind the 8 ball, and was placed on the P.U.P list until he was fully healthy. He made his NFL debut in London against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but wasn’t able to record a catch. He played the next week, but re-injured his knee and missed the rest of the season. In 2010 Tate flashed some talent both on kick offs and at the WR position. Tate finished the year with 24 catches for 432 yards and 4 touchdowns. Tate also contributed two kick return touchdowns. That would be as good as it gets for Tate as he was never able to develop further. He struggled to run the proper routes, dropped too many balls and struggled to grasp the complicated passing system. Tate was release after training camp last season and was picked up by the Bengals. What makes the Brandon Tate pick even more painful is that the very next selection in the draft was another WR. The Steelers selected Ole Miss WR Mike Wallace who has developed into the best deep threat in the game. Ugh.

    Edit: Here's Darius Butler, CB, UConn – 2009 Draft – 2nd Round Pick 41
Darius Butler seemed like a great pick at the time. The Patriots got the athletic CB out of UConn at a time where their secondary was rebuilding. Butler came in as a rookie and showed flashes of being a great pick. What happened between his rookie year and his second year remains a mystery. He looked like a completely different player and lost total confidence. Teams would routinely pick on Butler and he just couldn’t recover mentally. Butler was released last summer after it was clear he wasn’t capable of improving on his rookie season. The Patriots placed Butler on waivers and he was claimed by the Carolina Panthers.

Please reference the list of free agency decisions he has been a part of and how much money he has wasted by overpaying free agents.

He has built a mediocre team, and I'm not satisfied with mediocre.

I'm about the same that's why I don't argue about it I just want to see more reasonable means behind getting rid of him first. One would be treating him like that acorn if there is a replacement that would without a reasonable doubt be better. I just get tired of the non stop @#$^%$ I'll stop there.

  15. Are you unsatisified with the current roster?

Not trying to pick a fight just trying to understand why I should be mad at him?

Im not thrilled with everything he has done or how he has done it but he is putting talent on this roster, IMO

I'm in the indifferent to slightly favourable camp when it comes to Ireland. Having said this, I do see the value in evaluating the team he put together for Sparano as opposed to the team he is constructing for Philbin.

When Ross chose to retain Ireland during the purge this came with a clean slate.

Where some see mediocre, I see a team with an ascending 2nd year QB, with hits in the 1st and late rounds that should be contending for the playoffs from here on out.

When it comes to firing Ireland, we must be mindful of the "devil you know" theory. We don't know that the next guy won't be completely in over his head and won't deconstruct the organization.

Jerry Jones has put talent on the Dallas Cowboys roster. Would you take him as your GM?

There is more to being a GM than just putting talent on the roster. What I see is Jeff's lack of roster management ability. He doesn't anticipate ascending players on the roster, and he doesn't anticipate where problems might arise.

For example, lets take the OL. In the past 6 years, Jeff has used a #1 overall pick on Jake Long, a mid first round pick on Mike Pouncey, a 2nd round pick on Jonathan Martin, and a 3rd round pick on John Jerry. He has spent $25 million on Justin Smiley and $29 million on Jake Grove. Despite all of those resources spent on the offensive line, the Dolphins have the worst unit in the history of the franchise up front.

So that's a reason to keep an inept GM? Because we don't know if someone else will be better? Well, then, why the hell did we fire Tony Sparano? He was the devil we knew, and his team finished strong in his final year winning 6 out of their last 9 games. I'm not sure why he should get a clean slate either. All the money he has wasted in free agency has to account for something, because he has done it in this supposed clean slate. He has wasted more money in free agency than you can imagine.

First off, after making the playoffs with a roster that was good enough to make playoffs, he dismantled the secondary drafting 2 rookies. That took the team spiraling down. Next year, instead of realizing that the season was lost because the defensive backfield was torched due to his mistake, he fired the LB and went into draft reaching for both Odrick and Misi hoping to improve the pass rush to cover up for DB mistakes. Missed on Dez, Demaryius, Gronk, and Earl Thomas. Went and overspent on Marshall. That is just a slice of his ineptness for which he should've been fired long long ago. Every pick, every decision takes years to develop, and we are here 6 years into his decision making, still struggling to make playoff, not winning division. He is wasting everyone's time and we are put thru his learning curve and we don't know when if ever he will graduate.

Well the big money went to Wallace. I think the two LBs are getting paid the same as what we were paying Burnett and Dansby. I'm warming to the Wallace contract. I think Ellerbe will be a player for us. Wheeler...move on.

I think Philbin had a big hand in remaking the roster this past off season because we all know he was looking to purge the old leadership structure. Blame and/or commendation goes all through the organization.

Ellerbe has shown no signs that he is going to be a player for Miami. He has shown every sign that his contract is going to be an albatross though.

Mike Wallace is getting $60 million and has barely produced above replacement level (35 DYAR). This is after Miami traded two second round picks and gave a $50 million contract to Brandon Marshall, a known problem child

Karlos Dansby got $43 million. Dannell Ellerbe is getting $35 million.

Yes, he has. He is 3rd best among ILBs for lowest passer rating into his coverage, and the two players ahead of him have less snaps combined than Ellerbe has by himself.

He's the 5th worst linebacker in run stop % by inside linebackers that have played 50% of the snaps. He's 7th worst in pass rush productivity. He is 9th worst in tackling efficiency.

so no one should ever be fired. this has gotta be one of the dumbest arguments for keeping him. a GM is the same as a coach or a QB, you keep searching until you find the right one, Ireland is basically the general manager equivalent of the first QB he drafted, Henne showed some flashes here and there, did some good things, but he received ample time and opportunity to show he was the right guy for the franchise and he failed. so we moved on. Sparano failed, we moved on. Ireland has failed, yet he's still here, and his continued employment is considered a joke around the league. literally a joke, and this franchise gets ridiculed on the daily because of it.

Memo to you: When you are getting paid $35 million as a linebacker, you better be a stud against the pass, against the run, force turnovers, and rush the passer.

He was pretty good vs the run last year, so he could still improve in that role in our defense. I don't think we should say definitely yet that he was a bad addition. So far we have basically sacrificed run stuffing for better pass coverage.

Yep. In 2004. They interviewed him along with Randy Mueller, Rick Spielman, Phil Savage, Tim Ruskell, and Jerry Reese.

Think about that. We hired Rick Spielman over Ted Thompson and Jerry Reese.

We hired Jeff Ireland instead of Scot McCloughan and John Schnieder in 2008. Think about that.

Trent Baalke and Harbaugh are supposedly having some issues in SF, with Harbaugh angling for more control in his next contract and letting those Texas rumors hang out there.

If they decide to give Harbaugh the GM title I'd take Baalke in a heartbeat. Let him keep Philbin on for now and see how it goes.

You could see that coming from a mile away as well with Harbaugh's personality. I can see him being someone that is very hard to work with.

That San Francisco situation was also a unique one. Scot McCloughan did a hell of a job getting talent on that team, but they legitimately had a bad coach in Mike Singletary. That guy had a tremendous negative impact on that team, similar to the Cam Cameron effect in Miami.

Joe Philbin may not be the best in game tactician, but he's not a terrible head coach and has done very well with player development in his two years. In the article I linked above, this was a quote about Mike McCarthy:
Joe has been very good at knowing when to go for it on 4th down for the most part (I'd still like to see him a bit more aggressive here), and he's been excellent with challenges. I don't really see a lot of negative with his coaching right now.

I don't see a lot of positive with Jeff Ireland's ability as a GM. It's sad that we have to sit here and wonder what hole on the team he will create to patch up the OL and who is he going to overpay in free agency this coming off season.

Bad decisions have pretty much become franchise tradition for Miami, from GM/coaching hires, bad drafts, trades, FA signings, even bad PR decisions. It's just sad.

I fully support Jeff Ireland. I think we should keep him.
Some of you point to the record as being .500, but ignore the team is trending upward. Before he got here the cupboard was very bare. We didn't have any talent. Wanney left us in a 10 year hole. Ireland had to first select guys with high floors to keep the team competitive. Then, after we had a core of players, he can take a chance on high ceiling guys. Some of you want to blast him for not selecting a QB earlier also, then when he does select one, dismiss it as luck. I see some saying he hasn't addressed the OL, then lay out how he has continued to draft an OLmen every year early in the draft. Is it his fault, the guys couldn't step up their play?

I think some here took a fire Ireland stance early in his hire and after the Dez Bryant story, and now feel like they have to stick to their guns because they don't want to lose face. Not selecting Dez Bryant was the right move. (asking the question, was the wrong move). Getting high floor guys early was the right move. When he selected picks like Jordan or Vernon (right moves), some people here want to say it was a coach who selected them. Picks like Martin, were his alone.

The past few years, a team on a late winning streak with 10 wins has won the SB. We are having that kind of streak now. If we win the SB this year, some of the people will still say it was in spite of him and the talent he acquired and not give him the credit he deserves.
