Hey, Hows it going ? Congrats on the season, you look to have the number 6 seed in the bag IMO. Anyway, during my 2012 Broncos draft I took Lamar Miller in round 2. I really thought he would have a break-out year but it just hasn't happened. He looked good in limited snaps last year and averages 4 yards a carry and 600 plus yards this year but doesn't seem to get much opportunity. I find it strange that Daniel Thomas gets so many carries and Miller is ignored so much, he can be such a threat on the ground and in the air. Is he too light-weight ? Bad at pass protection ? Or is Sherman just mis-using him ? Also if anyone wants to talk football then thats all good Thanks
Nothing wrong with Miller as a runner. Unfortunately, Jim Brown in his prime couldn't have a good year behind our offensive line. That said, Miller can't pass protect, but neither can Thomas. I'm sure I don't have to tell you that Peyton was the score of the century. Easy for him to choose you guys when he saw that you already had a team that even Tebow could take to the playoffs. Good luck down the road. Maybe a concatenation of miracles will happen and we'll see you in the playoffs.
Thanks for the info. I think if Miami can pick up a good FA receiver (hopefully don't take Decker lol) and get Keller back next season you guys could be really good. I think your beat the Jets at home, Baltimore and KC won't both win on the road so you should be safe and probably travel to Cincy in the wildcards and then possibly to Denver. Should be some good games. I think PM chose Denver because of our GM, Elway. After watching Cutler, Orton and Tebow its nice to have a proper QB... even if its just for another 2-3 seasons.
Honestly I have never been that high on Miller. In fairness it is hard to judge him behind a terrible line but IMO he just lacks the right instincts to be anything more than an average back even if he had good blocking opening holes for him.
Actually, the way Matthews has developed, if Gibson and Keller come back at 100% and we can pick up a blocking tight end, we should be fine at receiver. Miller is explosive when he has holes to run through. He has good speed and decent vision and evasiveness. We are an offensive line and a power back (not Thomas) away from becoming at least competitive on offense.
Because with a little bit of room, hes got every chance in the world to be great.... Too bad our line couldnt run block against midgets on roller skates.
I think a lot of the issues lie in him not really being used appropriately. He's an outside runner, and this team doesn't do outside runs well. It doesn't have the linemen who can block the outside zone, and the coaching staff doesn't have the desire or inclination to adjust and get him on the edge with man plays either. There's also a bizarre hostility towards draw plays which doesn't really help either.
All true...and I repeat this very same thing every single sunday..win or lose. People around me are sick of hearing it. I'm sick of this coaching staff's obsession with Daniel Thomas.
Our offensive line isn't good enough to really decide if Miller is a player or not, just yet. I personally think he could be just like...I mean exactly like Jamal Charles but he's got to improve his pass blocking and we need a better offensive line.
Thomas and his running style are a better fit for an inept OL. Not to mention our current OC has no idea how to use his RB's. We had a pretty explosive threat in the backfield last year that was misused.
My biggest problem with Miller is a lack of physicality. I know he was not drafted to move piles, but goes down so fast at any contact. Should be used in space and incorporated in the passing game. His lack of of size really hurts us in the pass protection. He would be a fantastic player if joined by a bruising rb partner and an OC that uses RB's right.
The strange thing about Miller statistically is that he's good after contact on outside runs, but one of the worst in the league on inside runs. https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2013/12/19/between-the-tackles-part-2/ Interestingly, they've also got Daniel Thomas as one of the best runners outside of the tackles: https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2013/12/18/between-the-tackles/ Which begs the question why even if the outside zone is such a bust they don't utilize other elements. You know Sam Brenner can pull. You know Mike Pouncey can pull, and it seems as if last year they had it worked out well enough there was no footwork issues with center pulls.
Miller is indecisive and struggles to take what yards are there because he's usually looking for the homerun. Same thing happened at UMiami, lots of runs go for 0-2 yards. This is also due to the fact that he goes down on first contact most of the time and is not a consistently strong finisher. He's not a workhorse. He's a nice change-of-pace guy who can house it if given a lane. I think we need a legit feature back who can tote it with physicality 20+ times, and then mix Miller in here and there for a spark as your finesse guy. This rotation thing they've tried with DT and Miller just doesn't work. They're both so unreliable and inconsistent in terms of getting what positive yardage is available. Neither guy can handle a heavy workload; but the way it is now, neither guy ever gets in a great rhythm either. Developing a young QB like Tannehill is so much easier with a consistent run game to put the offense ahead of the down+distance and keep us in 3rd and manageables. We need a stud.
Bad in pass pro. Advertised as explosive and home run back, he is neither. Sidestep to elude the defender or hit a hole is missing. He can however hug the corner. There are also a structural problems in Miami, we play with no fullback so he does not get many opportunities at second level, carries are limited, and line blocking is not a strength of the line.
Problem is, that stretch play would be met by a DE and a DT 2 yards behind LOS. But agree, one of the biggest neutralizers to a pass rush is screen plays.
They do, and it doesn't work because the offensive line is horrible. The run game is a collectively bad effort. From the line, to the scheme, to the RB's themselves. There is going to be major changes on the O-Line in the offseason and I'd expect Miller to have a breakout season next year.
If we didn't have beached whales for lineman, Pouncey aside, maybe this would be possible. I'd love to see Miller in the Eagles offense.
Lamar Miller is billed as a starting running back when in reality he is a second tier player. He has terrible vision and awareness. Extremely over rated.
Pffft! effin' whitey, a second tier player masquerading as a feature back, lol...Merry Christmas, man. Feliz Navidad...
Miller will be fine with an improved OL (frankly he looked better last season). He's not a starter though. He's the guy you mix in for a power back and be more creative then rotating drives.
This regime appears to have a political commitment to Thomas. Thomas doesn't do much if anything better than Miller, they just insist on getting Thomas out there too. It baffles us to end, but the reason seems to be less about what Miller can't do and more about what they think Thomas can do. It's a terrible personnel evaluation all around, but the Dolphins specialize in acquiring the wrong players and then misusing them.
I agree that with better blocking, Miller can be a solid starter at RB. Maybe never a pro bowl level guy, but solid. OL should be brought in via all means in the offseason. I also think that a new RB has to be found to compliment Miller. However, I'm torn on whether that should be a power back or a savvy 3rd down guy.
That's not an entirely accurate statement. Has their been a poor personnel evaluation on Daniel Thomas? Yes. Have the coaches made a mistake in playing him so much? The numbers suggest no. According to PFF, Thomas has an overall rating of 4.0. Lamar Miller has a rating of -3.2. As rushers, Thomas has a rating of 5.3. Miller has a rating of -1.1. On pass plays, Thomas has a rating of -0.5. Miller has a rating of -0.4. Blocking, Thomas has a rating of -0.8. Miller has a rating of -2.0. Lamar Miller's biggest issue is mental retention. He's not that bright. He's very talented from a physical standpoint, but he has struggled up to this point to translate what he is being taught into his play on the field. Neither player is great at making yards on their own, and more than half of their yards has come after contact (shows how bad the line is). Miller is going to give you more break away opportunities than Thomas gives.
I'm no expert, but I have watched every snap for the Miami Dolphins in 2013. No way has Thomas been more productive when he's run the ball than Miller has. No idea where their system failed on that one.
