11 Million for the upcoming season. Editorial: This is a mistake. This kicking of the can down the road never works. We are overpaying as well for the luxury of being able to fade a serious injury.
Just remember that this doesn't preclude making a deal. Quite frankly we had to do the deal. Patterson is probably cap bait...........and paying for Nolan isn't right cause I think that's the best we ever see of Nolan. He's a #4 guy who will earn #2 money. Our draft picks haven't shown anything yet. Deal had to be made. Edit: Miko must have been leashed. 5 hours without a tweet from her is unheard of ;p
I think its an indication that the team does not have much confidence in signing Grimes or any other of the FAs available. This is a team whose reputation has been damaged and who has a lame duck HC .We may see a situation where players will prefer to go elsewhere unless the compensation is considerably better. If Marino is hired in some capacity that perception may change. He has credibility.
I support, but, I'd rather have them spend that $19M rollover on paying off Wallace, Hartline, Wheeler, Ellerbe, so they can be cut next year.
guess we'll have to see how this plays out ... but I'm sure that Grimes wants a longer contract then we are willing to give ... I know I wouldn't give him more than 2 years ... so Franchising for self protection is ok .... I'm not as excited about Grimes as a lot of folks here are ..... with Patterson being unreliable - you have to protect yourself to some extent ....
Is this a strategy? I would rather 3 years at 24ish. I think he can be a stud for two more years, good for a year or two after that. If he wanted four years the price would have to come down a bit.
I am disappointed. I was really hoping they would get a deal done with him, then use the tag on either Starks or Soliai. In case anyone forgot, our Run Defense was 24th in the league. Not good!! And if we lose both of those guys then the Dolphins now have to use a high draft pick on a DT when they already have so many holes.
Pretty sure if we get a deal done with Grimes shortly, we can use the tag on someone else? Even if not... getting a long term deal done with a guy like Soliai will be a lot easier than Grimes...
I'm not sure why anyone is shocked by this. This was almost certainly going to happen. It's a precautionary matter to give the Dolphins insurance just in case they can't get a deal done. Like Van said, this doesn't mean he'll sign the tender and it ends there. This just means that if they can't come to a deal, he will not hit FA. I don't think this necessarily means the Dolphins aren't confident in getting a deal done, or anything other than they want him back and are making sure there is no chance they lose him.
Grimes badly wants a long term deal. When he was in Atlanta is was a big thing, and until he gets it he won't be happy, franchise money be damned.
Well Miko hasn't freaked yet..................but that might be because she's dealing with more 'sensitive' issues (LMAO @ her latest tweet).
She hasn't freaked because they know this is a temporary thing while they continue to negotiate. The franchise tag is basically a chain to keep Brent a Dolphin while they try to iron out a long-term contract.
Franchising CBs is bad, the cap number is pretty outrageous. If he signs the one year deal and we don't get a longer term deal done this is a very bad deal. The front office instability probably made it impossible to get anything done during the season so it is what it is I guess.
Anyone know who reported this news about grimes being tagged? I can seem to find it anywhere besides this thread.
That's expensive. Eesh. But the alternative was also pretty unpleasant...giving him something like $18 million guaranteed money when he's entering an age at which corners typically start falling off quickly.
Wait is this supposed to be a secret Section? You posted this on the Main Forum. I'm not seeing it anywhere else. I don't want to say stuff on twitter about it if you intended for this to be a limited release of info.
I don't think either Starks or Solai are worth their franchise tag going rate.. I'm hoping they are working on a new deal.
The amount is more than 11 mil. Does anyone know for absolute sure that we only have to pay the first time amount. Atlanta franchised him as well. Do we have to give him the 120%??? If, and when, he has really been franchised.
well I'm hoping we sign him to a good 3 or 4 years worth... 4 years $35m.. $16m guaranteed or something like that. Then she and we can be happy. I heard Grimes interviewed the other day on Sirius NFL Radio... he was GREAT! Really a good guy, seems like a great guy to have in the locker room. He was very respectable of all the coaches. I think he should be on the leadership council next year. One thing that stuck with me from his interview, he was asked what was the thing the Dolphins defense did this year that impressed him? He said they really worked on turnovers and until the last game of the season, had forced a turnover in every game. He played a BIG part in that.
They weren't 24th in the league because of players. They were 24th in the league because our scheme sucks vs the run. Same group pretty much that finished as a top 5 run d before coyle took over.
The better move by far IMO is to convert to the base 3-4 and acquire Al Woods to play NT. Al flashed big time at NT for the Steelers while McClendon was injured. Al is a little lite for NT at 308 but he could add a few pounds and Woods is one freak of an athlete. He also has 36 inch arms and huge hands. I think he is ready to breakout in a big way. So is DE/DT Ropati Pitoitua IMO. At 6'8 315 Pitoitua would make a nice bookend at 5-tech to Jared Odrick. Pitoitua also added 4 sacks playing 4-3 end for the Titans last year playing on mostly run downs. You could almost say Pitoitua broke out last year but I think he could be even better playing 5-tech in the 3-4. Also, I believe AJ Francis's best position will be 5-technique. Woods and Pitoitua would be mid-tier FA's. Pitoitua would cost more because he played more last year and accumulated more stats but Woods is younger and has a very high ceiling IMO. I would guess they are both in the 2-4 mil a year zone. I would give Woods a five year and Pitoitua a 4 year. Then draft Caraun Reid to rotate and be used as interior pass rusher, and DE/5-tech Brent Urban to compete and perhaps beat out Odrick in the future. These two players are projected to be 4th and 5th round picks respectfully. A couple other guys to use a late round picks on are NT/0-tech Beau Allen who is grossly underrated IMO and who has experience playing NT in a 3-4 scheme, and OLB Tyler Starr, who, if he wasn't small school, would probably be projected in the 2nd, but is ridiculously projected 7th round/FA. Dolphins would need some extra late round picks even if we get a comp. Dolphins should trade down a couple times early and add some picks. Draft Moses Morgan to play RT and sign a LT and two OG's or a OG and center Mack if he gets loose in FA. Use Misi as a ILB thumper and Jordan as a Will LB/Joker and get Wheeler completely out of the starting rotation and keep Ellerbe off the field on passing downs. Relegate Wheeler to a backup/ST's role and cut him in 2015. If they do end up using over 13 mil in cap room on Grimes, then I have instantly lost confidence in Hickey, because that is a fools move considering the needs in other places. The Dolphins desperately need a better RB corps as well, and Toby Gerhart would be three times the back Daniel Thomas is. If they blow 13 mil in space on one guy there won't be enough to get the other moves done. They could sign Woods,Pitoitua,Gerhart, and Clemons or another upper mid tier DB all for the cap room it will take to franchise Grimes. It wouldn't be as bad as the Wallace deal IMO, but it would really be a damn crazy move. I really hope this report isn't true, because it will make improving the rest of the roster so incredibly difficult. And they intend to keep Matt Moore at 5.5 mil, and have yet to release Patterson. This is really looking like Ireland type presumption and arrogance. This gives me the willies. I envision an enormous sign saying...........wrong way.
