Maybe the rest of the NFL had it the same as the Dolphins with James being the last OL with a first round grade? If we traded back to 27, what was stopping some other needed OL jumping us to take James? This is all devil's advocate type **** now btw. I've got work in 3 hours, need to get some sleep.
What's in front of my face is that we needed a right tackle specifically. There are several offensive lineman overall who are better than our 19th selection, still sitting there at pick 29. I'm glad we got a RT, but this was a colossal reach. And he would have been there. And so would have a great, higher rated guard. In all honesty, forget being there at 27, he may have been there at our 2nd pick!
Our line was better before the draft started. We didn't improve our ability to put points on the board like the Bills and Jets did.
Think of him as probably better than Vernon Carey. In better shape; more mobile and athletic. Played zone. That's what we happen to need right now. If we hadn't needed a right tackle so desperately, I'd be upset. As it is, it looks like plain old horse sense to me; nothing fancy or creative. I'll take that. Let's see what we do in the next few rounds.
It's more likely that he would have been there at the 2nd pick than he would NOT have been there at the 27th pick...which was obviously in our grasp.
Everyone and their dog had the Dolphins wanting to trade out of 19 if the top 4 OL where gone. That's a low-ball opportunity, especially if you think the Cards won't move. They are your backup plan. With Manziel on the board and the Cardinals needing a young QB all the guys in the NFL studio are thinking they may take him. If you want to move in there, then it had better be a good offer.
I really think they hired Hickey to buy Philbin some time. Honestly, if Philbin gets fired after this season there is NO WAY Hickey survives. He will be gone for sure.
We have reached the twilight zone, Padre is advocating drafting fat people rather than TD scoring ones.
look at the teams drafting after us. Right tackle doesn't exactly jump off the board as a dire need worthy of overdrafting like we did. The only reason James would've been drafted between 20 and 26 is if he represented can't-pass-up-on value, and that's not the case. If he were "can't pass up on value", Hickey wouldn't have fielded trade calls, and we're a goddam team in desperate need of a right tackle. So, if James represented great value, the most RT needy team in the league [Miami] would've been on the clock before 10 seconds could run off.
The Jets took a safety... I'm pretty sure Ja'Wuan James is going to help put more points on the board than Calvin Pryor, unless you think Pryor's going to break the record for pick-6's his rookie season.
Who knows that would have happened if we hadn't taken James, no one. So it is conjecture. The Saints traded up, another team could have done the same.
Doesn't matter if they were getting lowballed, they should have traded back and gotten something. Listen at this point if you're arguing the Dolphins shouldn't have traded back, you're just plain wrong. I like the pick of Jawuan James, but they made a mistake not trading back and left a pick on the table, most likely a third rounder. That's poor resource management.
But think of how many TDs we were able to score in our last two games last year with incompetent fat people. One. We are in more SERIOUS need of fat people who can block for our TD scoring people.
Any competent GM would wait to see if a can't pass up trade offer comes in before making a pick. We didn't go the route you wanted, accept it and move on. All the belly aching is beneath you.
Pryor is a defensive player. The Jets signed Vick/CJ2K/Decker before the draft started. Offense=Better.....Defense=Better w/Pryor We already signed a probowl LT and a LG in free agency. Already was better than LY. Didn't need this reach pick. There was better value on the board. James is not worthy of #19. We should've taken one of the players that were or traded down. Everyone knows it.
You're reaching. The consensus all along has been that after Robinson, Matthews, Lewan and Martin that there was a drop off in OL. We're obviously seeing that in how the draft has played out. Pretending that nobody could know what could have happened is just naive. The risk of James not making to the 2nd round was minimal, arguably non-existent. They managed the draft poorly and will have one fewer 3rd round pick as a result.
Well Dolphin fans sleep well tonight knowing we drafted the last offensive lineman in the 1st round at pick 19. Whewwww that was close wasn't it? And BTW just in time to beat the Saints as they take a highly rated WR. Gee, could James be there at 27? Forget it, we couldn't use another pick by trading down anyway....right?
Hey I hope we make the playoffs of course , but I honestly doubt we do . I worry that somehow if we are not a playoff team no changes will be made as has been the MO for this team and we languish another , another , another season. Like some have said I think the pick/player is on Philbin ( not that we didn't need the position upgrade ) and I worry that the OL improves some but not substantially and that the excuse is we needed to address that and couldn't improve the playmakers and we'll do that next year . Of course maybe we get some impact players on day two , fingers crossed. Regardless , playoffs or bye bye , imo .
dude, the most right tackle needy team in the NFL was even hesitant to take James without fielding calls and discussing it first, yet you think a less needy team would've drafted him despite all the other value still remaining on the board and at positions of greater need to boot? Gimme a break.
I'm definitely not arguing that they shouldn't have traded back. If there was a 3rd on the table they most definitely should have taken it. If that 3rd was there and Hickey refused then I'll be driving the "Hickey is a moron" wagon. The problem is, we don't know what the offer was. The best guess would be the Saints offer to the Cards but we don't actually know that was the offer. Maybe the Saints thought the could low-ball us since people have been predicting us to trade down for over a month now and Hickey refused. Anway, this is the Dolphins we are talking about. We would have pissed that 3rd up against a wall.
Unfortunately that is more of the same , more Dolphin pain? Poor asset management , we've seen that before , and looks like we still are.
Stupid draft managing soured a good pick. This night could have ended perfectly with a trade back, an additional 3rd pick, and a starting right tackle. That was a really poor job of reading the draft and getting value off your pick.
Totally agree. I'm a big fan of the fat people on both sides of the ball. They are what win you games.
Well, considering we lost a few games because of our OL, I'd think we got better on offense and our ability to put points on the board as well. Hickey probably did screw up on the "non-trade down", but I'm not against the James pick. The draft is far from over, let's hope Hickey can redeem himself.
I'm not going to add anything new to this thread, but it was reported last week that Hickey looked at JuWuan James as a first round talent and he was was the BEST PURE Right Tackle in the draft. Thought it was a smoke screen like the Koundjio story. At least James shut Clowney out when facing him, which makes me feel less nauseated about this pick... He GD better start at RT over Fox, and he better be damned good from day one. If he really was the highest rated Tackle still on Hickey's board and they didn't want to chance losing him before pick 50 in round 2, then it makes some sort of sense, though if we left a 3rd or 4th rounder on the table, I'm pissed. I'd rather have had Haha at S or Cooks at WR, but I can be happy with it if he ends up better than Clabo, Columbo, Vernon, etc... hoping our GD OLine is fkn outstanding next season though. We just put $60M into it this off season including James now... Now get a damned playmaker in rounds 2 and/or 3...
The risk was minimal to non-existent. A third was easily worth the risk. In a draft this deep there will be some pro-bowlers selected in that round.
