http://www.miamiherald.com/2014/05/20/4126102/dolphins-abandoning-tax-relief.html If the city doesn't accept this the team may as well start look at different options. This is becoming borderline ridiculous.
Guess I'd finally get to make that transition over to the Ravens fanclub I've been joking about these past few years.
Now watch Miami-Dade want free use of the stadium that they don't want to contribute to financially... **** Miami-Dade...
The threat of LA is more valuable to the NFL than actually having a team in LA. I think if Ross were to move the team out of Miami-Dade, he would look to build a new stadium closer to home such as Palm Beach County or Orlando.
Palm Beach most logical place to relocate. That said, I doubt Ross is going to be the one to move them. If they move, it will be under the next owner IMO.
I guess it depends what the triggering mechanism is and what the payout would be, but at first blush it sounds like a reasonable deal. You'd have to have some way to determine what percentage of the event's coming here was the stadium itself versus simply being in Miami. Right now, we have only one event, Super Bowl 50, that didn't come to Miami ostensibly because of the stadium. Other than that, we haven't lost out on any events. Also would the payment be a flat, fixed fee, or based on the actual increased economic output, which is always inflated. Some details need to be fleshed out, but probably as good a deal as a county could ever get on stuff like this.
I wonder how much Ross dislikes Norman Braman. I mean...think about it, Sun Life is not going to generate any revenue unless they attract events. So they city is only going to incur a fee if the Stadium is being utilized.
All these rich billionaires wanting everyone else to pay for the stadium. You're making a killing on overpriced tickets, concession's, merchandise and parking. Pony up the cash and pay out OF YOUR POCKET you cheap arse bastard.
I wasn't aware that the voters in LA had an interest in building a new stadium for the Dolphins or any other NFL team. The fact is that LA would have had a team years ago if they were actually willing to build a new stadium, but they are not willing to do so. I could see the Dolphins moving to another area in South Florida or even as far a way from Miami as Orlando. In regards to them moving all the way to LA to play in a stadium which is older and in need of more repairs than Sun Life stadium, it isn't going to happen.
What? I assume this is a joke. It just isn't very funny. BTW - I live in what is considered the LA area and everyone here will not pay for a stadium. The states so f'd up with the democrats sucking the unions off at every turn they've run it into the ground there's barely enough money to pay for the city services they're responsible to pay for as it is.
If I'm not mistaken, Braman actually had positive things to say about the last proposal even with the tax breaks. I would imagine he'd be completely on board with this and I would imagine the government will too. Can't see how this doesn't get done.
This is America, bro. It's our civic duty to carry magnates, and their respective investments, on our collective back.
We're considering moving to the Orlando area in a few years. I like the sound of the "Orlando Dolphins". Or maybe they would just call them The "Florida Dolphins".
Miami/Dade County doesn't want to help with a new stadium or the renovation of the existing stadium but I bet they wouldn't turn down all of the revenue a new, or renovated stadium would bring to the area. I hate to think of the Dolphins being named anything but the Miami Dolphins considering I grew up a Miami Dolphin fan and my Dad (RIP) was a huge Miami Dolphin fan. I was born and raised in Palm Beach County but never even considered the Palm Beach Dolphins.
Did you? He wants to be reimbursed. From the article and the top post: "Miami-Dade would make the payments after the event, a source close to the team said." I know I'm new here but there sure are some aggressive people on this board.
If they moved to Palm Beach County, I doubt that they would rename the team as its still part of the Miami metro area.
Impossible to really assess the plan without knowing how much the county will have to pay for each event. The previous deals Ross offered were amazing for the county, so I'm assuming this one will be along the same lines.
The gov't would pay back after the event, which would bring in a lot more money for each event than they would be paying back. It's a performance plan, plain in simple. If the city is paying a fraction back from each event, they are coming out way ahead. If Ross fails to bring in big money events, then they pay nothing. It's not reimbursement.
In a global economy, if you don't subsidize your billionaires, you will find that there are not many left in your country to employ us. Bring it down to a state level. If you don't subsidize business and encourage them to come, you will find that not many want to come to your state. Some people are perfectly fine with that. Then again, some people think the South will rise again. I think states who need revenue and don't employ state taxes should be more corporate friendly. But hey....Florida has always been a "maverick" state I guess.
I'm not going to get in trouble for getting into PoFo stuff here. And yes, I've read your posts. the Kochs just happen to be the billionaires du jour right now. But pick any of them. How about the guy who compared criticism of billionaires to the holocaust? I think there was even more than one. Anyway, not going into it further
It's not as polarizing as that. All business isn't the Koch Brothers and Walmart. If you have that black or white view then I can see why your opinion is the way it is on subsidies for business for better or worse. The Miami Dolphins aren't an entity that is coming in to suck up jobs and crush small business. While yes, it needs investment dollars from you as a tax paying customer....it's going to need your dollars if it doesn't come out of taxes. They'll just raise prices. But the key thing is that, The Miami Dolphins are a local homegrown business. Just because they make A LOT more money that most other Florida businesses shouldn't change that and people shouldn't be so eager to see it up and move. I live in a locale where we pay A LOT Of taxes. Most of the people who live here would not be so eager to let their franchise go. There was a point when the Redskins were let go and now that city is fighting to get it back. I don't want that for Miami....because it's not a given that they'll move down the street like the Redskins did. And it's not going to be easy to A) Start a new franchise or B) Just move back.
I live in LA and I still don't want them to leave Miami. I'd probably stay a fan, but being born in Miami I take pride that the Dolphins are Miami's team.
Why is there any discussion of the Dolphins moving? Ross has not said that he needs these renovations to compete, or to turn a profit, which are the typical reasons owners agitate for new stadiums. He's framed this whole thing as doing a favor for the city/county. So if he's doing us a favor, out of the goodness of his heart, why is he looking for anything in return?
Quite simple really. He can't make good on the favor to the city/county without the initial investment from the tax payer. He's laying out his case for why you should give him your money and how you will realize your return on investment. But all people see is, you're a billionaire....go away. Same thing people said when banks wanted them to hold their money. It's a typical business transaction. Bank of America or your saving banks give you money (Interest) out of the kindness of their heart, but to do so....they need you to give them your money. The Miami Dolphins are asking you to invest in it so it can bring more revenue to the county. If you think it's a bad deal.....then yeah....ok. But the fundamental relationship between the Miami Dolphins and it's customers doesn't seem like that different of a concept...as are business subsidies period. This is just the one you heard about.
