Mike Pouncey doesn't think he needs a mental health eval & doesn't regret last year

I wouldn't cry if we could get a team to trade for him.

 

He should at least say, "The only thing I do regret is missing the playoffs."

 

You can't be sure how much of it is an immature, macho act. However, if thats all true, he's really coming across as someone who thinks that hes never wrong and cant learn from his mistakes.

 

Pouncey is seriously a world-class dumbass.

 

again, making a big deal over every little thing Pouncey says or does seems a bit silly to me.
- Is he performing at a high level on the field
- is he breaking any laws?
- is he harassing anyone at the moment?

who the hell cares if he is saying the right stuff. he doesn' t have to be our leader. as long as he isn't getting in trouble with the law, you'd be a complete idiot to trade him.

 

To be fair, these little things he says are indications that he hasn't learned any lessons. Are they proof he'll screw up? No. But the arrow is pointing that way.

 

The NFL has basically stated that he has to go for sessions before he will be allowed to play this coming season.

While Pouncey may be a very talented football player. He also is an immature jerk who doesn't seem to care if his refusal to attend the NFL required mental evaluation process might mean he will be suspended from games this coming season. Obviously he feels it is more important to continue with his immature behavior than it is for him to do what is best for himself and the team over the long run.

Right now I hope the coaching staff and Hickey realize that Pouncey does not have what it takes to be a leader on this team and they trade him before the season begins. No matter how effective he may be as a starting center in the NFL. His behavior makes him a cancer on this team.

 

He was served a subpoena in a murder case and is potentially seen as more than just a witness, there are candid indications from teammates he does loads of drugs, and he appears to be totally capable of having the same kind of behavioral issues he has had in the past otherwise.

The guy is a ****ing train wreck intellectually and behaviorally, and it's luck rather than merit he hasn't been suspended yet.

 

Will you feel differently about his behavior if his refusal to attend this NFL mandatory mental evaluation causes him to be suspended for regular season games in 2014?

 

He has not refused to attend this mandatory evaluation, he just said he does not think he needs it. I agree that he would be an idiot if he does not attend it, but that is not case, yet.

 

Someone just needs to tell Mike to not speak. At all. Not even when spoken too.

And he probably DOESN'T feel he needs one, but not being smart enough to keep that to himself, rather than blurt it out like my colon does with shellfish, shows that the guy is really quite stupid.

 

This mandatory counselling will be a waste of time. As with any problem the first step is admitting you have a problem and obviously Mike isn't there yet. Albert, James and Turner are all suppose to be high character guys. Hopefully they rub off on Mike.

 

Wish the headlines weren't about Pouncey not feeling he needs a medical eval. That's actually the most sane part of how he answered that question. Insisting he has zero regrets about how last year went down is the insane part and that needs to be the headline (if there is a headline).

I don't know if Pouncey has serious issues or not. There are bad signs. Any time you're subpoenaed for involvement in gun running for a murderer and then you're seen out wearing hats in support of that murderer, framing his jersey in your house, etc...I mean that's not good. Put it together with his consistently rumored (more than rumored, actually) involvement with drugs (marijuana at the least), his involvement in the Martin stuff including that disturbing shower scene described by one player, and then his obstinent refusal to believe anything was wrong or even needs changing (i.e. the tweet about more rookie hazing during the draft)...you've got to let this guy's contract expire, or maybe trade him off.

Just don't end up paying him a bunch of money to burn you because nobody can ever sit there with a straight face and tell you that you couldn't have seen it coming.

 

The Miami Dolphins and the NFL care. And really, sometimes (often!) discretion is the better part of valor.

Not only that, but football is a team sport, and Pouncey's a member and starter, a really good one from a purely football standpoint, of the team. However, he continues to make selfish decisions that very well could jeopardize his playing on the team, both short and long-term. There's certainly the suspension aspect, and you have to think the NFL is watching this guy after the happenings of last year. Then, there's the team having to decide on him long-term, and as good as he is, every time he seems to open his mouth or do something publically, he just undermines himself, and likely the team's desire to extend his contract, with something inane.

Regardless of whether you think last years "bullygate" was something or nothing, the NFL absolutely thought it was something, and it is in both his team's and his own best interest to walk the straight and narrow for a while. And for all that, he can't or won't do it. On the field I really like Pouncey and think he's been the best part of our lackluster line. But man, when I think about re-signing him... somehow I keep thinking - time bomb.

 

I don't think Pouncey will care anything about the character of James and Turner. Considering they are both rookies, the only thing Pouncey will be concerned with is what type of gifts each of these players will present to him during training camp.

I find it somewhat strange that some of the same people who felt it was fine for the Dolphins to get rid of Marshall and Vontae Davis for character issues, don't seem to have a problem with the obvious character issues presented by Pouncey.

Perhaps he will grow up one day, but right now his behavior is no better than Marshall's or Davis's when they were with the Dolphins. In fact if Philbin's job wasn't on the line this season, I imagine he would be asking Hickey to trade Pouncey ASAP.

 

The simple fact that you have to add in "...at the moment" to that statement about harassment is proof enough about how much of a clown Pouncey is? So even though he's friends with a murderer, acts like a wannabe thug, spent the majority of his time in Miami harassing other players, and refuses to admit guilt in any of it...he's ok as long as he's not harassing anyone RIGHT at this moment?

Pouncey is a ticking time bomb, just like Incognito was. These are the kind of moments we all looked back on when the Martin/Incognito story broke. We all sat and marveled at how many excuses the team made for him, and how long his leash was for years before Martin broke down. We thought "how could they have not seen this coming?" That's exactly what's going on with Pouncey too. All the little things are eventually going to give way to a big incident. Then we'll say "why didn't they see this coming?"

 

Obviously the NFL feels that the incident on the Dolphins last year involving Martin, Pouncey, Incognito, and Jerry was far more than a non-story. Also the fact they have required that Pouncey receive a mental evaluation prior to returning to the playing field means they believe his behavior was wrong.

In regards to Pouncey, it isn't just one or two incidents. It has been numerous incidents, including comments which came out in the Martin incident, which makes it appear that Pouncey seems to like to indulge in more than moderate drug use.

Basically Pouncey is a good football player who appears to be a bad guy and not someone I really want playing on the team I root for.

 

So… who would trade for him, is the question? Is there a coach or GM who would think nothing of this sort of stuff?

How's Seattle set for a center? I could see Pete Carroll rolling with this.

 

I honestly hope that with all our new additions the culture changes a bit. It's hard to be the tough guy when the four other guys playing beside you want no part of it.

I don't know about anyone else but I miss the days of Tim Ruddy and Todd Wade . at least they were decent citizens . now days our players are head strong about being the center of unsavory attention . WE must be carefull because these clowns will bring down this franchise and we are not completely out of the bully gate scandal yet. the Comish is likely to say enough is enough and then we will be short handed again then next year we will end up drafting olinemen again.

I say suspend Pouncy and go out and sign two veterans as insurance policies.

 

I would have no problem with trading him to the Seahawks. Perhaps with Ireland helping the Seahawks during the draft, he can convince Carroll to offer at least a couple of second round draft picks for Pouncey. That is what Ireland gave up to get Marshall from the Broncos. I would take two second round picks for Pouncey in a New York minute.

Personally I think Pouncey probably needs a location change at this stage of his career. Perhaps he will turn it around, much like Marshall and Davis have done since leaving the Dolphins, once he is with another team. As long as Philbin remains the HC, I don't see Pouncey's behavior changing at all as a member of the Dolphins.

I think a lot of his behavior has to do with the fact that he just doesn't have any respect for Philbin or the management of the Dolphins. He seems to figure he can say or do anything he wants and nothing will happen to him. I can't imagine for one second that a coach like Don Shula would have ever put up with a player who disrespected the team as much as Pouncey has over the past year.

 

Agreed... All Pouncey really needs to do is mature and be more professional. From all accounts, he showed up to camp in great shape, and he and Branden Albert are meshing well as vets. As far as that goes, Albert and James both should be a better influence on the entire line as they are good people.

If Pouncey is guilty of anything, it's a lack of judgement and showing poor taste. He's a 24 yo kid millionaire who was being mentored by Cogs and Long. The new culture of the OLine and new coaching staff should be able to help him mature and improve as a player and person.

Until he becomes a problem himself off the field or on it (like Marshall or VD), or gets into legal issues himself, I'll support him.

 

You can't field a team of altar boys. Read some of the old stories about the '72 team, or the '68 Jets, or the '90's Cowboys. Since they each won a Super Bowl, we now say that boys will be boys and what they did on the field is what counts. What separates Pouncey from the way guys on those teams are thought of is about 12 wins a season.

 

I'm for trading him if a good and ONLY a good offer comes along. Pouncey has ticking time bomb written all over him. His actions lately are not what i expect to hear after last seasons PR disaster.

Do the Steelers have issues with his brother like this? That's my first thought. Does the bullying scandal amplify Mike's stupidity? Like is there more of a storyline with Mike because of that?

Didn't Maurkice come out an apologize for what he did, ie the whole Free Hernandez shirt thing?

I just wonder if it's because the Steelers have better leadership, they're a better run organization, or Maurkice has injury woes that make his situation more volatile. I dunno. I'm just wondering why I don't hear about Maurkice being a complete moron every month. Maybe he is and we just don't hear about it.

 

I'm not arguing that Pouncey doesn't have potential to end up screwing up. But he's still young and the worst negative influences on him (Hernandez and Incognito) are no longer interacting with him. So, while he has potential to screw up, he could also have the potential to grow up a little. My point is that you don't trade away a player because he has potential to screw up. someone that talented, you give him the benefit of the doubt and try to influence him to make better decisions.

Being best friends with someone who turns into a murdering scumbag is nowhere near as bad as beating your wife IMHO. People have been more than willing to forgive some of our players who've done much worse and actually broken the law.

 

This brings up a good question:

A) Did the team not coach and/or absolutely insist that Pouncey shut the Hell up about all of this and act like a professional, or else say nothing?

or

B) They did and he chose to ignore them, basically giving Philbin and Hickey the finger?

Someone is messing up big time, one way or another.

 

This story is going to have legs. His stupid comments will carry severe consequences. There's no way he passes any mental evaluation.

 

It's not about fielding a team of alter boys. It's about creating a world with good people in it.

 

Unfortunately, it's about winning games and making money.

 

The NFL? Yes I totally agree.

I'm just speaking from a broader perspective where the NFL is part of life as a whole.

 

You're not going to hold onto your money for long if you're giving big chunks of it to people like Mike Pouncey.

I hope the coaching staff provides this guy with the incentive to shut the hell up.

I could care less what these guys do but the league is different now. Back then, you could stab your teammate like Michael Irvin and nothing happened. Now you get suspended for jaywalking almost.
