I think Steinbach wanted to give it one last try to see if he still had what it takes to play in the league, health wise and mentality wise, and Philbin gave him a chance due to their history together. Most likely just a 1 yr vet min deal with no guaranteed money. After a week or so of camp, Eric came to the realization he didn't have what it takes anymore. He was able to walk into retirement with a satisfied mind. Now because of that, you think Philbin is doing something to force the team to sign Colledge based on solely his evaluation? And that was what he did with Steinbach?

In pass protection he was 36th out of 79 guards who played at least 25% of their team's snaps. 575 pass blocking snaps. 2 sacks, 9 hits, 18 hurries. He played 1,050 snaps. Missed 22 snaps in week 4 and 36 in week 7. 42nd out of 81 guards in overall grade. Cards runners averaged 4.6 yards behind left guard, and 3.1 middle left. The 4.6 tied for 2nd highest team average by direction.

Problem really is/was he would not sit a Vet who was playing badly for a unproven young player.

JJerry was a prime example to me.

I like the signing, to me we are going with Vets on the OL again.

I know exactly what Steinbach was up to when he came here, the problem I have is Philbin bought it..why the hell would you buy into someone when he obviously was begging to be put down...I saw it with my own eyes, and stated it..

I don't know that force" is the proper word, I'm sure like Steinbach he's in the ear of the GM telling him that out of all these bad options he at least knows this dude...

Now of course I understand every player is different, but after such a bad evaluation of talent in a very similar circumstance it's hard to trust Philbin when given the choice..

Lets hope Colledge is just different, as in better and playing for the right reasons, I'm sure it will be obvious in preseason, hell I didn't need preseason games to know that Clabo and Steinbach were washed up.

They took a few days to see if he still had what it takes. He didn't. He retired. Didn't effect the team in any significant way. Big deal? Nope.

A middle of the pack offensive lineman is the best we can hope for when we sign street free agent vets.

You're putting waaaaaaaaaaay too much importance into that signing. For all you know he did asa favor to Steinbach or did it because he wanted Steinbach's take on the personality make up of the guys on the line. You forget those go back quite awhile.

Point being, there's many reasons a coach might bring in a guy at camp, its not always because of perceived talent.

No kidding. A little time and energy is all that was lost. A non-issue.

Is it a big deal in the long run, no, that's not what were talkin about here, Philbin wanted to sign him, and gave no inclination that he was under some three day grace period, looked like he was all in.

All I'm sayin is I dont think I would let Philbin call this shot just because he knows him, he's already shown he can't look past a guy that is burnt toast...also I really can't say I can trust Philbin with anything that relates to the oline, the performance and decision making there, with coaches and personnel has been below par.

If hickey signed off on the acquisition it's all good..

This isn't a board game, everything is analyzed, everything can be connected and lot of things can be signs positive or negative..

I know if I was the GM, and Philbin said to me after the steinback workout, that he wanted to sign him, I would of said, " it better be because you want him to get a read on the personality of the group then cut him in a few days", and if he said "no I think he can help us'", then I would of said to him, " are you fu@&ing blind?"

Which scenarios looks more likely to of happened..I go with B.

The Steinbach experience was telling about Philbin, I found.

For one thing I agree with DJ you could look at his tape and tell physically he didn't have it anymore. I looked at his tape and said that, so really anyone in the coaching staff or front office should have been able to do the same. But Philbin lobbied for him anyway because he knew him.

For another what I found to be absolutely astounding was when Steinbach came to Philbin and complained that he wasn't feeling like his usual self and asked for some time off, Philbin easily granted it. I think he might have even suggested it. It just struck me because I don't see Philbin being that lenient with anyone but "his" guys. It just struck me as weird.

beginning to end, freakin weird is right..

I'm not saying it's a deal killer for the head coach, just keeping it in mind..

Hmm, can't trust the former oline coach on oline decisions.

At least we still have his playcalling and QB development ... Ooops!

There are a lot of "ifs" in your post here. Speculation. Whether or not Colledge helps the team will have nothing to do with how Clabo, Steinbach, Colombo, or anyone else you can think of it. Different player, different DNA, different set of circumstances.

As for Philbin's analysis, if we are to AssUMe it carried extra weight compared to the OL coach, GM, or our pro scouts, the fact that he got one wrong with Steinbach just shows he's human. ALL talent evaluators get one wrong sometimes. Even the greats like Ozzie Newsome, Joel Buchsbaum, CK, you, and even Aquafin. :)

    lol

I know every situation is different, I do..my point remains because the mistake was so obvious it makes me scared..now, I'm not saying Colledge won't be the answer, cause his workout could of been awesome and easy to detect upgrade, I'm just pointing out a flaw in our head coach, nothing against darryn..
