A hypothetical. The line sucks worse as we've lost pouncey and despite the newbies showing in flashes they can't all come together. The RBs stay the same as last year. Clay regresses to the mean. The receivers don't step up. Tannehill looks good but doesn't carry the team. The D performs to its high standard but we can't cover the weakness on O. What happens in the off season? You'd assume that Philbin goes. I want him to succeed but he's just not convincing. Does Hickey get the elbow too? What then is your dream HC and GM combo? For the record I don't think it will be like this. I'm positive, just asking.
Philbin and Hickey will tell Ross that one year together is not enough to get all the pieces they need to be succesfull and Ross will give both an extension.
If Philbin does not get a winning record this season he is gone in my opinion. If the line sucks again they both will gone.
Philbin needs to go barring a playoff berth at the minimum. If Philbin goes, Hickey should go too. It's not fair, but it's business, and at this point I'd really hope the lightbulb goes off and Stephen Ross figures out that trying to saddle incoming candidates with the guys he doesn't have the heart/balls/brain to fire has hurt his attempts to fill jobs. The best-case scenario is finding a way to get an unhappy Jim Harbaugh here.
If Philbin and Hickey are both gone I would like to see Ross let Aponte run the show. Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk
The first mention of Aponte since hickey was hired! The longest she's gone without being mentioned on this forum? Who is the talent evaluator out there? Who is the head coach? I don't know a great deal about the college ranks but I hear Malzahn being mentioned lots. Is there a coordinator who could do the job? I did like Mike Zimmer.
Do you mean this in terms of letting her pick the next GM and Head Coach? If so, I wouldn't be opposed to that.
If the season breaks down and this happens, GM first then HC. They''ve got to be on the same page. Consensus leadership. Find common ground and ideals and build the team to that.
The only way to approach a situation like this is let it play out, candidates will come to the forefront, you have to see how hickeys acquisitions perform.. There's different scenarios as far as hickey is concerned, it depends on the potential coach comin in if that's the case..
You want an unproven college coach over Jim Harbaugh? The guy that has made SF a perennial superbowl contender? And who knows how to get the most out of limited QB's? Why is that?
If the Fins don't have a winning record this season, Philbin and Tannehill are both gone. Hickey will likely stay.
There's no way in hell Tanneill is "gone" after this year, and it's highly unlikely whomever came in wouldn't focus on trying to work with him.
You really think they'll cut Tannehill? I think compared to Philbin he's done everything that was asked of him in poor situations, 2 games aside. If it's bad then we take a QB in round 1, that still leaves the rest of our problems. I think Tannehill stays regardless, I also think he's gonna have a badass year.
That would be a really tough decision, it would come down to longevity and who convinced me that they are in this for the long run, because their both great.. Fin -D doesn't trust Harbaugh, thinks he's unstable..which I don't agree with..
I think Harbaugh is going to crash and burn at some point and I think his team will also along with him. The man's not stable and I think with no balancing power like a FO executive with pull (which is exactly what would happen here) we'd see him spiral out of control faster. Malzhan, is winner at every level. He's got a bit of the Shula in him.
I think Hickey & Philbin have 2 years no matter what. It's so painful to re-read that after I've typed it.
I think Harbaugh isn't being respected enough by his front office, not enough power..so if it does spiral out of control I would blame that.. Does anyone realize how dumb Vernon davis?, if I was a coach I'd want to trade his *** real quick, if I don't have that power to do so, I cannot do my Job effectively, the situation will not work.
You can say that, but reality in the NFL says something different. Three years is about all a QB or a coach gets.
Cut? Maybe, maybe not. But I think they try to trade him if the new coach wants his own guy. If not the first year of the new coach then definitely once he gets his own QB.
Malzahn also has never had to manage men with millions of dollars in their bank accounts. I'd take Harbaugh every day over him, that said if a Harbaugh wasn't available then yes Gus would be worth a try.
Trading him indicates someone sees something in him, in which case what the heck are we doing ditching him? I've not really looked at next years draft, what's the QBs like? Would that be our most pressing issue?
FWIW, I do think Philbin is doing a good job w/our most important asset, Ryan Tannehill. I do think Ross would make a push for Harbaugh if things play out that way.
I'm not sure I'm entirely curious to see Ross put in a situation where making the correct decision becomes more difficult.
You guys are unreal. Hickey is not getting fired no matter what happens this year. You don't fire a new GM after one draft. Especially when that draft and a key FA pickup was made to solidify what was one of the worst offensive lines in NFL history, compounded by a draft class by the predecessor that had ZERO impact and the supposed star prize of the draft suspended for the first quarter of the season. Under no circumstances should Hickey be fired unless this draft class is equally as putrid as the last one or if he puts his foot in his mouth and goes off the deep end.
His instincts are good, his problem is in the spotlight he becomes a clumsy oaf, it is not that Philbin is a bad coach, more that he is an uninspiring coach. Give him some credit for sticking to his plan, guys are coached up, or they do not play. The problem with that approach is the 4yr clock for FA in the NFL, by the time they become competent, we lose them to FA.
I think the nonsense from the national media that if Philbin goes, Tannehill goes is hilarious. Ryan would have to totally crash and burn this year to be let go. The won/loss record depends on a whole lot other than the qb.
I think it's entirely plausible, I see the situation that could result in that outcome. Did Cleveland not just do that? I know, the last team we wish to follow. I don't think anybody will ever really know how in love with Hickey that Ross is. It's all just guess work.
Exactly, there was not one area of his game that did not improve in 2013, save for fumbles, otherwise an ascending Qb in his mid 20's is not someone a team jettisons easily. That was Henne's problem, he stopped developing and lacked the killer instinct in the RZ
Exactly what makes you think she knows anything about selecting a quality HC or GM? She is responsible for the finances of the football team and making sure the Dolphins remain under the cap. That certainly doesn't show that she would have any expertise in regards to the hiring of personnel to run the football side of the organization. Making her in charge of hiring the next HC and GM would only make Ross more of a joke of an owner than he is already perceived around the country. If the Dolphins fail to make the playoffs again this season. The best thing which could happen for the Dolphin organization would be for Ross to sell the team. The Dolphins have failed to have a single winning season with him as the majority owner. He consistently settles for mediocre talent when it comes to the hiring of head coaches and GM's. He is the major problem with this organization and the sooner he sells the team, the better off all Dolphin fans will be. Paying for stadium renovations doesn't make Ross a good NFL owner. Hiring the right HC and GM to turn this organization around is the only thing which makes a good NFL owner. Ross needs to sell the team and stick to what made him rich in the first place. As an NFL owner, he has proven that he is clearly out of his element. I have no doubt that the next owner would hire his own HC and GM and Aponte would likely be shown the door also.
Hickey has done a good job so far in being able to retain Grimes while picking up Albert. He had no choice but to go RT after 2013 so for someone to imply that he would be fired after one season is ludicrous at this point.
