Mike Silver tweeted today that Michael Sam is not expected to make the Rams final roster (having trouble linking from my phone).

If true, I think we need to take a shot. He's been great this preseason, and the alleged media circus/fallout of having an openly gay player on an NFL roster has proven to be nonexistent.

At the very least, bring him in until Jordan makes it back and go from there.

No. We are already deep as heck on the D Line and I don't see where he is better than any of our backups. Don't need him. If you want to grab him and stash him on the practice squad maybe. Would the rules even allow that?

If is not good enough for the Rams, why we should get him?

Because the Rams have probably the best and deepest line in the league. They could go almost 12 deep with NFL caliber players.

Sam is a good player, good pass rusher.

    He will make a roster.

Mike Silver has a proud history of being wrong, so I'd save this conversation for when he actually gets cut.

True enough about the Rams D line, But we aren't exactly loaded with bums there.

I agree that he should be able to get on a roster somewhere.

really now...... the Rams' have the deepest defensive line in the NFL..... just because they're the worst team in their division doesn't mean they don't have talent....... we as Dolphins' fans should know what it's like to have a Top 3 defense and not make the playoffs consistently.

I'm not suggesting that we need him, but if we were in need of a DE, he would be a very fine choice.

Not a position of need. Talent wise...no because of the Phins depth, Hype wise....lets get him and make him an instant shoe in for Canton. I feel bad for Sam regarding the overhyped coverage that kid is getting. Pathetic and shameful but was it going to be anything else? I hope he makes it but he was on the backfoot from the start. He has been made a prototype robocop regardless of his actual talent level. Not great from the sports press point.

Ya by the media coverage you'd think Johnny Football went #1 and Sam #2.

Shameful garbage. I mean, I know Sam is a human interest story, but it doesn't need to get quite as much as it does. Manziel's just garbage...

That's the question right there. Sam has played well, but I don't like his potential more than Fede's and I don't think he'd contribute better than Wake, Vernon or Shelby. If Sam had been on our team this preseason and played similarly, I don't believe he'd make our team either. Much like the Rams, DL is one of the strengths of our team.

He's in a meh market so they're not about to take Manziel's ***** out of their mouth just so they could throw money away covering football in Jacksonville.

He's gonna have to win 5 Superbowls before he gets the attention manziel gets just by taking a selfie with some hookers and showing up 4 hours late to rehab.

What's pretty hilarious also is that kid Hill came in Texas A&M's first game w/o Johnny, and busted out 511 yards passing, breaking Johnny's mark. ESPN proceeded to jump all over HIS nuts too.

Sam has a huge chip on his shoulder, but I think it's because of what he represents... I wouldn't dump Fede for Sam... A bunch of 7th round/undrafted players are just as motivated as Michael Sam, they're all in the NFL for a shot at changing their lives dramatically.

The media circus on Sam wasn't ever going to be a constant storm - it's a constant potential threat. It just needs one person on the team or staff to make a stupid comment and hell would break loose. That's the media concern about Sam.

End of the day though, DE isn't really something the Phins should be spending valuable roster spots on at the mo.

I find the whole Michael Sam event as a society contradiction - if you want homosexuals to be treated equally then you should also treat him equal to your typical 7th round draft pick. I just know that if no team signs him to a practice squad the gay community is going to call out the NFL for being homophobic when the reality is, he's just not that good of a football player or athlete. Can he produce if we need him to sub for Oliver Vernon or Wake? Might as well just leave 10 players on the field cause I think he would be a hole on the defensive line against first string LT/RT's.

I don't care what he's into - male, female or animal. I don't wish Sam anymore success than I would to Ben Gardner, Jabari Price, Andre Hal, etc. They're all just as deserving to make it in this league than he is.

Really though, I am surprised he hasn't made it on to someones practice squad. He surely played well enough for that. I was not impressed with anything about him at the combine, but he seemed to play better than he showed. Then again, it was mostly against third stringers.

I think the big issue is that he's a developmental 4-3 DE that doesn't play STs. The 4-3 part eliminates about half the NFL right off the bat. You're end of the bench DEs generally play STs or they're inactive every week. The goal would probably be to develop him as a pass rush guy in your nickel. You probably aren't going to sign him for your active roster now since he'll be inactive every week. As a ps squad guy he's also limited since the upside is probably no more than a potential nickel rush end. He'd have to be a pretty good pass rusher to justify playing him while losing a STs contributor. I'm not sure a ton of teams will think he'll ever be that dynamic a pass rusher.

    That's just ridiculous.

No one is treating him any differently. Its news so news outlets report on it.

If people don't want a big deal made out of gays doing something they historically haven't done or done in the open, then maybe we shouldn't discriminate against them anymore.

So tell me, why does he deserve a roster spot over other 7th round draft picks? The guy isn't that good of a player, should the NFL just put him in a 53 man roster just to make a statement that they're for gay people?

Cam Wake and James Harrison both had to go through getting cut several times, released from practice squads, play in the CFL, to finally make it in the league as pro bowl defensive ends/OLB's. Sam should try to earn it just as much as they did if he's any good. If he disappears to the CFL and he never comes back I wouldn't give a crap, it's about producing results on the field and if no coach in the NFL thinks he can bring that to their team, than they shouldn't be pressured to do so. Big freaking deal if he's gay, really, some of you put this sexuality nonsense in a pedestal and that's why this country hasn't evolved socially from it yet.

Let's stick to football - tell me why he should be in a 53 man roster, the guy has poor tackling skills and isn't any good at stopping the run, isn't very strong nor fast, he would get bullied by most starting caliber left tackles in the NFL. So what is it then?

No one is saying Michael Sam shouldn't be cut on the principals of him being gay. They're saying he is a player who merits a roster spot. It isn't ridiculous that the Rams cut him, but it is ridiculous to suggest he's awful and totally does not belong on an NFL regular season roster. There are and will be worst defensive ends on rosters going forward.

The guy was a 6th or 7th round pick that didn't pan out...Besides, Hickey and Philbin avoid the media/cameras/microphones like most of us avoid the jests... They dislike being asked questions and answering them etc...If we pick up Sam, the mics, cameras and media folks will be milling around like ants in a honey pot... No thanks, don't need em, don't want em....
