You alluded to it, but the main problem is the NFLPA and why they allowed it to get to this point. Imo they're just as culpable as Goodell. By over - protecting one of their members they've opened up Pandora's Box and given the League (and Goodell) more power and leverage to become judge, jury and executioner. I don't buy for second that Goodell will be ousted or resign either. He's been left unchecked for too long and I doubt he makes that sacrifice.
eh the nfl will just wait till this blows over. Look at the bullying scandal. Nothing really big happened there either. I wouldn't doubt they let rice back in the league in a year.
I'm really having a hard time grasping how people realistically think that the NFL could have initially suspended Rice for more than two games? Do you really think that would have held up? Two games may actually be the most severe punishment for a first-time offender for this type of behavior. What rationale could the league have used to levy a harsher punishment?
I think it has to do with a change in perspective and attitudes toward recreational use and a growing outrage in society ov3r unjust punishments for victimless crimes versus light punishment for actual crimes involving a victim. It does tie into the league's new more lenient policy for drug use and testing. There's nothing wrong with society changing precedents in light of changing attitudes. At one time it was ok to discriminate on race but then society changed. At one time beating your wife was considered your own business. Society changed. Now society is relaxing its attitudes towards recreational drug use and liberal values but becoming more intolerant of racism and abuse in all forms and the NFL, rightly IMO, has to change to reflect society's changing views.
The question isn't whether the NFL changing its policies. The league announced new policies for domestic violence, and there weren't any issues. The question is whether they can change those policies when levying punishment against a single person. This comes back to how much power do you want to give the commissioner.
I posted an article on one of the other pages that outlines this. Although there is contradictory information there, because on one hand the league can impose new penalties on players based on changing policies/rules but the league can't impose double jeopardy...but double jeopardy doesn't apply to personal conduct. So....I don't know.
Rice is going to wait this out before he gives the green light to his lawyers, priority is getting on an NFL team again - if he sees that he's blacklisted from the league because of this mess in which many players have been forgiven/given second chances in the past for, then the NFL, Baltimore Ravens and Atlantic County is going to get a lawsuit they could have avoided 7 months ago. Ray Rice is beloved in New Jersey as he's a Rutgers guy, so it's no surprise to me that Atlantic County law enforcement tried to sweep this mess under the rug. Just look at Tallahassee's handling of Jameis Winston - that's just how it is for these celebrity football players. I'm almost positive that Roger Goodell has been in constant contact with Ray Rice, telling him to hang on, let the storm go by and he will get him on an NFL roster. Goodell is going to do his best to do right with Rice and the fans crying over his first offense.
I wasn't referring to him being punished again. I was referring to the time when he first was punished. If Rice had initially received more than two games, it would not have passed the grievance process IMO.
That has nothing to do with my point. A poster laid out criteria for someone not being punished commiserate with the crime. I took exception to that criteria. Doesn't matter if the criteria is real, imagined or there solely to make a point.
I specifically said that following the logic, nothing could get solved. That simply isn't true. Following the logic, things absolutely can get solved.
Its not a lifetime ban, its indefinite, they can choose to lift it. They just want it on their terms, I don't have an issue with it. And no one is picking up Ray Rice, his career is over.
If thats what the collective bargaining rules said then yeah sure 2 games was it. However, the Ravens could have and should have cut him, then the other owners could have just not signed him. That would have been a fitting end to everything, now its a huge mess.
Ray Rice playing football starting in October some time should have to do with how good a football player he still is. I have faith it will. ETA: I have no idea how good or bad he is. Last year's stats suggest he has lost a step, but frankly we often see a back his age have a bad year and then 2-4 more good years.
https://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-...videotape--of-rice-in-elevator-211534602.html Goodell is already plotting the Ray Rice redemption story. My guess is that probably this means somewhere by midseason Rice will be signed to a team with a similar offensive philosophy as the Ravens from last year that needs RB help.
Thought so, my guess is Denver or New England gets Ray Rice in October, unless Goodell plans to hold him long enough till he isn't playoff eligible for extra punishment.
I think the max he will be able to hold him is applying after week 6, getting approval just before week 7, and playing around week 8. What Goodell gets out of indefinite is looking tough right now. What Rice will get to insist on for not making big waves is this not going much if at all farther than what is announced as policy now. Isn't the Colts running game kind of hapless? I wonder if he could catch on there, which would be a real **** you to the city of Baltimore.
Goodell is going nowhere. That fraud Bob Kraft was on TV defending him this morning and washing his balls. Speaking of which, makes you wonder about what other videos Roger has seen that he claims he didn't?
I dint need to see the punching video to know the pos that ray rice is..his wife sticking up for him and some who say we shouldn't judge the married couple, well, y'all and his wife listen up, all you need to do is see the way he handled your knocked out body like a dead dog to know you are either to dumb to give him up, scared, or you dont want to lose that Guap.
Rice's career is probably over. He is radioactive right now and he clearly lost a step. If he was still a superstar, next season some team might take a chance, but it's not worth it now. Vick got another chance because he was a QB who people still saw upside in. Rice won't get that same benefit.
I just want to point out that Battered Person Syndrome is a real thing and we shouldn't judge his wife too harshly. Its fine that many simply can't imagine being beat on and taking it and then even defending the person doing it, but that doesn't negate a very real psychological issue.
His wife may also be making an appropriate rational decision. There is no indication I have heard that Rice has ever been abusive to her or anyone else before or after.
I still think you did the right thing by finally turning in Maynard to the authorities. Sent from my LG-MS770 using Tapatalk
Let's not forget that they have a kid together too, so another reason to understand her. But, I feel like no one mentioned the beginning of the video when she goes to walk past him to get on the elevator and it appears he spits in her face. Then when they walk into the elevator it appears he does another head-bob/spitting action at her again which sets her over the top and prompts her to try to hit him (Can you blame her?) It's like he was baiting her to try to hit him so he could knock her out.
Things not looking good for Goodell http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/11503851/ray-rice-videotape-sent-nfl-executive-april
http://espn.go.com/espn/otl/story/_/id/11503496/ray-rice-spat-face-fiancee-twice-punch-lines-reports I can't believe this hasn't been mentioned yet and this is being "reported" and talked about just now. It's pretty clear in the beginning of the video that he spits in her face as she's walking by him. And then when they step on the elevator it looks, although not as clear as the first incident, that he spits at her again which prompts a response from her and then the knockout punch. Anyone??? Am I the only one that sees this clearly in the video?
Goodell has authorized an independent investigation. I seriously doubt that if there was dirt, he would do such a thing. In any event, Goodell is untouchable. The owners love him. Goodell is bad cop to their good cop. The owners use him as a mouthpiece and he takes all the flake and they get away clean. Goodell is the fall guy. Getting rid of him serves no purpose.
Probably to find a fall guy. Unless someone squeals that he personally watched the video its a he said she said type situation.
I saw the first spitting, when she is walking past him by the column. In reaction, she reaches out and tries to slap him, but doesn't stop and keeps walking into the elevator. He then follows her into the elevator, waits for the door to close so there are no witnesses, and gets in her face again, pushing and cuffing her. When she finally loses it and rushes at him, he clocks her. It's a classic bullying technique used by a much stronger person against a victim who can't possibly hurt the bully. Goad the victim into a physical reaction and then wipe the floor with the victim, "justifying" it because of the victim's reaction to the provocation. It was really not smart to stay in the elevator. She should have walked out before the door closed. It was even less smart for her to try to hit him. But that kind of presence of mind doesn't come easily when you're goaded into anger. It's too bad this woman doesn't have a few brothers and cousins who can exact some street justice.
yep... just look at the salary the owners give him, what did he make last year again, 44 million? All of them were written checks from the owners? Pretty sure he's not leaving.
