Hi first time poster. Vontae Davis is such a beast at cornerback. Just imagine if we kept him. Davis and Grimes are a fantastic duo.
Because Jeff Ireland was a dunce and Joe Philbin felt he had an attitude. Next question By the way, welcome. Always good to have more Phin fans
He was immature and unprofessional. He would come to team meetings still drunk from the night before. His skill set wasn't an exact fit for Coyle's new defense, and he had 2 years left on his rookie contract. The coaching staff and the front office decided he wasn't worth the headache to turn him around so they got rid of him to maximize his return.
Is he really a beast now? I have not kept track of him. I thought it was a bad move to trade him but I was not overly impressed with his play here either.
He is a physical freak and very good if you put him on one guy or one side and don't ask him to think...I don't think he fit in with what the plan moving forward was.
Yes. So far this season: - Ranked #1 by Pro Football Focus at his position - 4th lowest rating against when targeted in the entire league (Basically the QB's rating when targeting Vontae) - 6th lowest completion % against (43.8)
Thats cool thanks for the update. I am happy for him finding sucess. He seemed like a good team player while he was here. I always thought he wad a bit overrated by the fans but if he is growing into his potential, good for him
Hated it then, hate it now. So did Mr Clean. He makes game changing plays even tho he can be a wild hair at times.
Oh well we have two good corners now who are both fun to root for. Did you see him on hard knocks? Im guessing he had trouble tying his shoelaces, hence the trade.
My friend and I were just talking about how amazing Vontae has looked this year with the Colts. Definitely a Top 5 corner. He's been laying some hits that would give you chills down your spine. Just a whole different player than what he was in Miami.
he was my favorite dolphin during the sparano era. thought it was a great pick by ireland. one of many problems i have with philbin was his decision to get rid of him
Bad trades are a tradition for the Dolphins, Brandon Marshall, Vontae, Wes Welker, a 2nd for AJ Feeley, a 3rd for Lamar Gordon, etc...
It might be one of those situations where he needed the trade to wake him up, who knows. I hated the trade at the time, it wasn't good value and even decent corners don't just grow on trees in a pass first league. I thought he was too young and too talented to get rid of but I remember the trade being fairly popular with a lot of the posters here.
I hated the trade at the time, don't hate it as much because Miami's db play has been decent since. I thought Vontae for TY would've been a good deal. Ireland tho
Not with me, I thought Sean Smith was way too soft compared to Vontae. We traded away the wrong cornerback and Ireland thought we kept the best one. Then you think of what we had to replace him... Wilson and Nolan Caroll... And I am not going to be too hard on Sean Smith though because what disturbs me the most, is that these high potential players like Smith, Davis and even Dansby, they left the team and performed substantially better in their new teams. And that's on coaching, that's on our "defensive back specialist" Coyle. But what ever, it is what it is, and I think we got some nice young ones behind Finnegan and Grimes. Vontae is better than all of our current DB's though, I've watched about 5 Colts' games this season and he just stands out, if you watched him last week against the Bengals, he is just a ballhawk and receivers can't separate themselves from him, can't shake him off, as soon as he has his hands on them they're going to the ground. IMO he's the best defensive player in the Colts.
Vontae Davis is talented but had too many distractions in South Florida and he was undisciplined .Not a reliable high character player .Showed up drunk for meetings and was lackadaisical to coaches instructions He has less distractions in Indy and perhaps he has grown up a bit.
Vontae is a great DB and it was idiotic to trade him. He also has one of the highest wonderlic scores in the NFL amongst DB's. Mid thirties if I recall right. I think he came into the league after just turning 21 so that fact along with his immaturity that he displayed at Illinois and his problems early on with the Dolphins would indicate he was a person that they should have recognized right away as needing some special attention until he could mature. I blame the brass. Dolphin FO and coaching staffs have just been abominable these last several years.
I loved his physical style of play, I thought he was a dangerous man, but he just is not smart, obviously has some issues emotionally, and with work ethic.. his brother is no different..just dumber.
I look at it this way, we moved Davis - a time bomb who was going to be very expensive - for Grimes and a 2nd rounder. I'm happy with it. If either Taylor or Davis can step up and replace Finnegan next season, we're good at corner.
It was necessary, it was clear he was content and just having a ball as an underacheiver in the nfl. I was the one calling Vontae out that offseason, frustrated with his development and lack of drive to get better. Hell if you ffollowed him on twitter, you wouldnt even think he was a football player but a celebrity. The trade came as no surprise to me, and i applauded the value. It did help him, and sean smith get their **** together.
He's not been that good as of yet...he's still trying to 'find' his niche. We did the right thing...it was a pretty simple move... What exactly has he done as a Colt that he didn't do here...be inconsistent is about it...that's why we dumped him...
Yes, at the time I think we were terrible at developing our young talent overall. The fact is that we traded away a top 5 CB entering his prime for peanuts, there really isn't any justification for it, terrible trade. I've watched a couple of Colts games and he is playing at an all pro caliber level without a doubt. I'm not sure how anyone could watch a Colts game and not come away amazed that we let that kind of talent go for pennies on the dollar. I don't buy into all of that "south Florida party scene" crap either, we seem to make that ridiculous excuse every time we dump a good player as though we can't develop talent in Miami because of the club scene. Excuses.
He's playing at a top 5 CB level and will be an all pro selection, not sure what NFL games you're watching this year.
I don't know where you guys are getting this intelligence issue from because Davis kept a 3.0 point average through college and his 33 wonderlic was the highest amongst DB's that year. It was maturity, not IQ that made him an annoyance. Dolphins should have been patient with the still very young man.
Why do people keep bringing up Grimes as though it was one or the other? We traded Vontae for a draft pick, not Grimes.
I would of kept vontae personally, but we don't know the whole story, we don't know the example that was being set by him..
Exactly. Grimes is a mature, quality person and good team mate, and we're paying him big money. I'd much rather spend the money on him. Its irresponsible to spend big money on two CBs, IMO.
IMO trading him was the best thing for both Miami and Davis. I doubt he would ever have become as good here. He always had the talent, but was never disciplined. I expect that the trade forced him to grow up a bit.
