and that's exactly what you hope for out of your 3rd year QB, and if the organization continues providing him with an opportunity to succeed and maximize potential, then some time in future he will become capable of beating an elite defensive by himself just as other great veterans become capable of in time. BTW, I think the "9 times out of 10" is a little extreme. His accuracy, placement, and ability under pressure has improved noticeably lately, so he'll certainly make those throws more often than 1 in 10 times. He's already beaten an elite Seattle D by himself, and that was before his recent development.

It's weird, sometimes when I'm defending Tannehill to friends and other Miami fans, I wonder to myself, "Am I being like those guys who used to defend John Beck and Chad Henne?"

I don't think that I am. I think Tannehill is already a very good QB in this league who hasn't hit his ceiling yet. As Fin D said somewhere in this thread - I think it's just hard to believe we may have finally found a QB who will stick around longer than 3 years and have some success in this league. At what point can we matter of factly say it and believe it? I think with QBs like Brady, Manning, Rodgers, Brees it happened after the first playoff successes. So here's hoping Tannehill gets that under his belt soon. The only thing I worry about with Tannehill is not Tannehill, but instability with the team due to coaching. But even Philbin seems to be improving. But is that on Tannehill? Or Philbin? Or Lazor? Hopefully all of the above.

I wonder the same too. During Henne's third year of starting, I lost all faith in him. I never saw any real growth from year one to end of year two.

However with Tannehill I saw growth from year one to year two. Then with a new offense, I expected him to struggle at beginning of year 3.

So I didn't feel the same because of the different situation.

My defense of Beck came mainly because Mortensen vouched for him so adamantly on ESPN. He came in, looked like a QB, talked like one, and I really thought he had the potential.

For me, Henne's one game against the Jets on MNF is what made me a believer. Those throws on the final drive before Ronnie Brown ran in the TD were great.

The issue was that none of those guys ever really improved. They didn't learn from mistakes, and it seemed like nothing changed. With Tannehill, he has improved each year, done the little things better game by game, year by year. People argue this now, but a lot of people didn't expect him to start Year 1. That was supposed to be Garrard (or Moore). I was impressed in year 1. Then last year, he actually threw for 20+ TDs. How many times has that happened in the past 15 years? I disagree with friends'/family's views last year about his pocket presence. I truly think the O-Line was plain horrible.

If he throws for 30 TD, 4000 yards, 13 INT and runs for 500 yards...does he get more respect?

Yes, somewhat. The people defending Henne weren't really defending Henne per se. They/we were more defending the belief that young QBs who have flashed promise should be afforded more time to show who they are or aren't than an often impatient fan base is wiling to allow. What clouded things with Henne was how influentially bad Henning, Parcells, and Sparano were [similar to how influentially bad Mike Sherman was], so Henne supporters just wanted a little more time to distinguish the true root of the problem, especially after he looked like a future stud when he first took over for Pennington before Henning & Sparano could sink their mitts into him and coach the gunslinger out.

Henne supporters weren't operating off the belief that he was a shoo-in future Pro Bowler; we were just against pulling the plug at a time when half the fan base was ready to pull it due to the circumstances involved. So if that's how you found yourself feeling about Tannehill, then yes, you were being like those who defended Henne, and you got to feel what it's like to get harassed by Tannehill non-supporters simply because you preferred a little more time to form a definitive opinion about his future. Tannehill clearly possesses more ability than Henne, and he's now in a significantly better position to succeed than Henne ever was, so I think the overall level of optimism and patience is higher and rightfully so.

He's far from elite and TBH I'm a little concerned at how quickly the mood on Tannehill has changed. He's not playing significantly better than he did earlier in the year or even last year.

What's changed is his supporting cast and more recently his level of competition.

Chicago, Oakland and San Diego are bad teams defensively. They're terribly ill equipped to defend our offense and it showed. We will find out how much the O and the QB have come these next two weeks vs defenses that are better suited to stopping us and vs the Pats, Broncos and Ravens after that. Not trying to piss in anyone's corn flakes, I'm a proud RT supporter but I also realize this is a process and our expectations should reflect that.

While I can certainly understand your feel there, I think RT has improved more than you stated. He's more definitive with his actions, his passes are more accurate, he's WAY more comfortable running the offense.

More to your point though, I agree it's synergetic. As the line improves, it allows him to improve individually. As we have success running, it allows him more freedom to operate. Without those things, he wouldn't be developing like he is. The coaches finally embracing him running is also proving VERY beneficial to the overall offense's success. It helps the line, the backs, the receivers, everybody.

Pocket awareness. Pocket awareness. Pocket awareness.

He learns that, we may have a true stud on our hands. Half-stepping up can help.

Clean pockets, and he picks apart defenses. He has also improved in the "completions while taking hits" department. I notice his throwing angles under pressure are much improved. Less batted balls. The blitz pickup pass to Damien Williams was not made by Tannehill ca. 2013.

The playmakers certainly help his yardage stats, but I would like to see more accuracy in downfield passing. He has improved in leading receivers. Yes, he could be better with some if the ball placements, but as long as they're completed, he can improve in that idiosyncratic nuance.

Improvements are being made, and he is growing before our eyes. I admit, I was highly skeptical going into the season, but I am optimistic he can now lead Miami. He seemed green in that department earlier in the year. Still some mistakes, as witnessed by the Red Zone fumble, but overall, I think we have to be pleased. Growth and improvement are what matter. We are almost seeing both played out on a weekly basis.

Before the end of the year, I want to see continued improvement in pocket awareness and a better grasp at the deep ball accuracy. His deep tosses on right rollouts fade out of bounds. He needs to get better at that, and I think he will given his other areas of improvement. I just hope it happens sooner rather than later.

Couldn't have said it better. If he can start attacking all areas of the field with accuracy he will be a good QB long term. If he can do that and improve his pocket awareness he could be very good.

He has steadily improved since being here...in several areas. Of course, he's got some improvements to make...not many don't. I see Manning, Brady, Rodgers make mistakes every week...less of them, but they still make them. Ryan has DRASTICALLY reduced his mistakes since last year...there's no denying that. He's your prototypical developing QB, he'll get there, just need trust and patience.

Sorry man, it's not my style to do this, but what happened in there today amongst a few guys, the OP included early on in this game was pretty ridiculous. The guy had 4 incompletions only, was making good decisions, but as soon as the fumble happened, it was all out war on "Cannehill" (IRDA)... it was wishing the Bills ran up the score on us so we can clean house of Philbin and Tannehill (Patssuck). That was just the tip of the iceberg. And just as I said in the game thread... I bet they'd disappear when he took over the game. You could just see it coming, he was playing too well, just like he had the last 5 or 6 games that prompted this thread. Some people are just too weak mentally to have faith, and cant differentiate a QB making a mistake between a defense making a good play.

Tannehill is playing far more reactively than Henne ever did. The things he does are done with a sense of purpose.

He still has plenty of room to grow, but hes flashing way more week in and out than Henne did even on the good weeks. Sure some of that comes down to supporting cast...but as others have said there is a growth and trajectory in place.

The last 2 weeks could have been brutal, but he came out of both games with solid numbers against some of the leagues BEST defenses. Many talk down on the bills and lions based on recent history but fact is - they are some stiff difficult defenses RIGHT NOW, TODAY. There is improvement. No doubt about it.

No, he'll be one of the all time greats if he does that.

I think people have very unrealistic benchmarks for QBs. You're basically saying if Tannehill had no weaknesses, he'd only be good.

Even if they don't make the playoffs this year they'll likely win 9 games (baring another late season melt down). His arc is constantly going up. He's not hitting the deep ball cuz he doesn't need to hit the deep ball. He'll toss a few bombs to Wallace to keep the safeties honest but that's not this offense's MO.

He needs to trust his legs more. He's forgoing an open field to run to make throws way to often. I bet if he tucked and ran that fumble play last night, he gets 5 yards and they score on that drive.

He's the best thing this team has had post #13. If you want them to draft another QB then prepare for another 3 or 4 seasons in the wilderness.

Just went back to the game thread to see what all the trolling was about. Some of the worst garbage I have seen on this site for years. Same cast of characters with the same nonsense. Some new trolls sprinkled in(PhinsMiami) spewing more nonsense. Huge difference in being critical and being over the top...some just looking for a reaction. Usually like to check in on the game thread to see if other fans are seeing what I am seeing. I am not doing that again. Really needs to be cleaned up. Some really embarrasing reactions...even more embarrasing seeing people disappear after the fact. This site was and is better than that.

Yeah, I agree. I would expect a little more from the moderators. I don't have an issue with emotional reactions following a loss. But the clearly trolling, baiting behavior that has been going on all season needs to be addressed. As annoying as Shouright/Dolphans Unite! was, I think he paled in comparison to the absolute garbage coming out last night. And he got banned.

Also, I don't want to see opposite opinions gone, I just want good, football conversations. Having to continually rehash certain arguments, simply because the same cast of characters throws out the same disproven arguments on a weekly basis is tiring. Part of good conversations is opposing viewpoints, but people need to at least listen to the facts when they are presented with them.

I think RT had some good plays and good reads - but the offensive system created some open receivers. Nearly all Miami's big plays came on short passes and RAC.

That said, RT has the same consistent problem - not reading the D fast enough and reacting to throw the football early. He needs to see the play as it is unfolding and anticipate. The Wallace play was a certain TD if he a) throws it a half second earlier and b) leads him.

The D really came through. The offense was decent. The running game with Miller was pretty good. I'd say it was an adequate game from the O and RT.

I don't get the complaints in this game on the deep ball. There really was only one and it wasn't a bad pass. Had he decided to throw it early and hit Wallace in the seem between the CB and S that might have been a better call. There was a fairly bad miss when he scrambled and missed Gibson open in the end zone but the play would not have counted because of the PI call against Gibson (still a miss on an open WR).

But, they just didn't really go downfield that much. That could be RT but it could also be coverage and/or just scheme.

The Dolphins O is moving the ball but not making huge plays. This is a deja vu scenario to me (reminds me of Sparano's first year). Hopefully, this will pick up.

The missed TD to Wallace in the 4th Q was really a bad read.

Well, those things along with making reads quicker and really fine running his accuracy would be a recipe for greatness, yeah. I guess what I was trying to say is that if he gets his deep passing to be adequate and just take a sack or two fewer a game he'd be at the Matthew Stafford, Joe Flacco level of good QBs. I think he's right under them right now.
