I'm largely interested in the draft(and FA) in regards to free agency, and I really haven't seen it considered so much. So let's discuss it.

I figure I'll color code it, to determine high-need, medium/situational need, and low need.

High Need- Positions that are badly talent deficient, key positions, or are likely to have high turnover.

    - Interior Offensive Linemen- This might be the worst performing area on the team this year, with a bunch of players getting starts and the best/most consistent performer being pre-season eve signing and career journeyman Samson Satele. There are irons in the fire in re: to Billy Turner which should be considered. Mike Pouncey will likely turn it around, but he's also going to be going into the last year of his contract with strong questions as to if you can re-sign him.
Type of Need- Miami will likely want movement skills here, someone who can pull or outside zone.

    - Wide Receiver- Jarvis Landry is the sole receiver on the roster whose seat is not hot. Brian Hartline and Brandon Gibson are likely cap casualties, Mike Wallace should be as well. The current coaching staff seems to hate Rishard Matthews and has buried him. It seems like a major restructuring is in the cards here.
Type of Need- Miami has a particularly short group of skill players, poor red zone production, and little deep passing production. Someone who can go up and get the ball down the field seems quite likely.

-Cornerback- Brent Grimes is capable of playing at an extraordinary level, but is the wrong side of 30. Neither Courtland Finnegan nor Jimmy Wilson are either particular liabilities or assets, and their respectful cap numbers or free agency could result in two of three "starting" positions opening. Their understudies(Jamar Taylor, Will Davis) have not particularly distinguished themselves.
Type of Need Potentially both boundary and slot, if the team is retained a FS/SCB hybrid is possible as well.

Medium need- These are areas where significant resources could be expended, or scheme changes could result in particular requirements.

-Tight End- Charles Clay is a free agent, if he walks this shoots up as a high need position. If he stays, room for an additional high workload player of a different skillset is a potential rule.
Type of need- Bigger target, better blocking. Both would be a big addition.

Safety- Reshad Jones has been excellent since his return, but Louis Delmas is at best acceptable.
Type of need- Free safety, but Kevin Coyle has a predilection for safety/slot hybrids.

-Interior Defensive Linemen- Have two good starters under contract in Randy Starks and Earl Mitchell, but Jared Odrick is a free agent and a big part of the rotation and the depth has not really distinguished itself.
Type of need- Generally more 3-technique oriented, but a move to a 3-4 could mean a larger guy with end experience is a bigger need.

Runningback- Lamar Miller has played well with his skillset catered to, but the depth has been poor and Moreno is a free agent.
Type of need- Power seems a good bet, pass-catching if this offense is retained is a must.

Kicker/Punter- Both Caleb Sturgis and Brandon Fields have been particularly average this off-season.

    Low Need
    - Positions largely filled, where any acquisitions are likely to go to injury-only players.

Linebackers- All three linebackers have been good this year. Koa Misi and Jelani Jenkins appear pretty well locked-in, and while he's expensive for his role Phillip Wheeler is also performing well.

Quarterback- Barring big, earth-shaking collapse it seems unlikely a new coaching staff would choose to spend a high pick here to replace rather than to work with Tannehill. Matt Moore is a FA, but he seems to be comfortable with his role.

Offensive Tackle- Branden Albert is hurt, but the nature of his contract and Ju'Wuan James early play suggests they'd be more interested in a swing-tackle than a starter.

Edge Rusher- Wake and Olivier are performing at a high level, and they've got depth/development in Jordan/McCain. Even a scheme change seems unlikely to change much,.

Do not know where Miami will be drafting, or how high this kid is going to go, but I feel if Amari Cooper from Alabama is there, you take him.

I think he has the makeup to be a special player. Good kid, all around.

I also like Sanquez Golson and Cody Prewitt from Ole Miss. I watched Golson in high school. Ball hawk. Prewitt is a sound safety. Not the fastest, but solid. Of course, I am kind of being a homer given my ties with the school.

I noticed you left off linebackers. I think the unit is medium need, as I expect Miami to June 1st cut Ellerbe. With Freeny being an RFA, there is no guarantee he's back. That leaves SLB Wheeler/McCain, MLB Misi/Trusnick, and WLB Jenkins/Tripp. I don't expect Miami to keep Kelvin Sheppard around either, but he could be brought back for cheap. Trusnick and Wheeler both seem like the first two guys to go, so picking someone with MLB upside would be ideal.

Whoops, I put it in as a "low" need. It's more of a depth thing than anything, with Misi/Jenkins locked in. Wheeler has played well in a limited role, and I think it's hard to see him make the June 1st designation list over other candidates.

I wonder if a solid tackle prospect falls to Miami if they don't take him. Yes, they put a ton of money into Branden Albert, but there's no guarantee he'd be back for the start of next year. You *could* also play him at LG when he does come back if you do draft a tackle and that tackle and Ja'Wuan James are playing well. Similar to the Satele situation when Mike Pouncey came back this year.

If Ja'Waun James shows he can develop into a franchise LT. Do you keep him there move Albert to LG? Been pondering that for a few days.

Wallace and Ellerbe are my June 1st cuts. That alone is roughly ~15 million in cap savings. But that locks Miami into a 1st or 2nd round WR pick.

Wallace is not getting cut. Ellerbe and Wheeler are both gone IMO.

Taylor's play this last week was much improved. Maybe he has turned the corner lessening the need for a CB early in the draft.
if it is me I don't mess too much with the defense, I look for a WR to take Hartlines place, red zone target type TE... And fix the ol. I think Tannehill has proven he can play very well when he has time to see the field.

i agree with those that say you draft a tackle early. You can not go into another season with no depth at OT. If one of the the, Albert, James or draftee have to move inside so be it.

I'd tend to expect a replacement for Albert(in whatever form) would be the one playing Guard in the short-term.

Wallace saves more money with a June 1st designation than Wheeler does, and Wheeler is playing better than Wallace.

Amari Cooper is a stud. Check out this still photo of the only long play he made against us:

With respect to interior linemen I believe that Shelley Smith is playing well enough now that he is getting the opportunity at left guard that they will be induced to keep him in 2015.

At center they have to be thinking about the possibility of allowing Mike Pouncey to walk and then just re-signing Samson Satele while grooming a younger player. It's too bad that they haven't given Pouncey the chance to play center in this particular offense to see what his potential is or isn't, but that's been their choice and they have to live with it.

The right guard position is open. They need a starter. They have Billy Turner but have thus far refused to see what he has to offer. They will probably keep Dallas Thomas for whatever god forsaken reason. Nate Garner's contract is reasonable.

Given all of this, I believe they'll tinker rather than overhaul at guard, and there could be a big move at center.

Brandon Gibson and Brian Hartline are almost assuredly gone, if the current staff remains in place. This is not even a question in my mind anymore. In addition to schematic fit issues, there are things going on behind the scenes and I'm not talking about the Darlington report.

Next year you will be looking at a list of holdovers that includes Mike Wallace, Jarvis Landry, Rishard Matthews and Matt Hazel.

I also suspect they will want to add more size, red zone and RAC ability to the lists.

Guys like Kevin White and Amari Cooper are no-brainers but they're also going to be high draft picks. Would they pick them in the 1st round? I think the narrative for this year's offense is being written as one where we get into the red zone a whole bunch but can't punch it into the end zone. On that basis, yeah I suppose you could see Miami go for a guy that could improve their red zone production in the 1st round.

But on that basis, they could also target DeVante Parker, Jaelen Strong or Devin Funchess.

The guy that is probably the best all-around fit for their preferences is Kevin White.

If they decide to knock the priority level of this position down a notch (which is also a strong possibility), then players like Austin Hill, Antwan Goodley and Jordan Taylor will strike their fancy, I would think. They could also look toward a J.J. Worton in the late rounds or undrafted area.

At corner I think Jamar Taylor may be in the process of earning his way into their plans for next year. The players like him better than Will Davis. The position coaches like him better than Will Davis. Really the only guy who doesn't like him better than Will Davis is Kevin Coyle. Cortland Finnegan missed a game this year and Taylor was asked to step up and basically he nailed it. That along with his 2nd round standing will earn him significant street cred whether he goes back to being a mediocre rotator or not.

Could they jettison Cortland Finnegan? I think Kevin Coyle would vote for it. His salary jumps a little bit. Let's say that they do jettison Cortland and then let Wilson walk.

This defense requires very particular corners, based on what I have seen. It doesn't seem like they place an emphasis on size. At the same time it doesn't seem like they place an emphasis on 4.3 speed. They don't necessarily want your classic hip-pocket press-man guys, either.

Don't at all be surprised if the type of guy they favor are guys like Demetrious Nicholson (UVA), Greg Henderson (Colorado), Craig Mager (Texas State) or Richard Leonard (FIU). I still haven't done near the work I need to on this position (it's usually one of my last) my impression is some of those guys may fit better.

The safety position is an interesting one because I get the feeling that Coyle and Hickey may be a little at odds with one another in that Hickey seems OK with drafting it high whereas I think Coyle doesn't want a player that has to learn on the job how to communicate and get the defense lined up, I think he prefers a veteran.

I think Kevin Coyle will lobby EITHER to get Louis Delmas back OR to get a veteran in free agency, and with Walt Aikens already tutoring behind Reshad Jones and Louis Delmas, they'll be prioritizing this pretty low. I personally think they should look into Stevie Brown in free agency.

I wouldn't look for them to do much more than take a low round or UDFA shot on a Tramayne Bondurant or Robinson Therezie.

They picked up Mike Poucey's 5th year option, so I'd tend to think unless he did something really stupid on the off-season he would be the bridge to next year.

At tight end I don't think they're going to look very hard for a blocking type. They already have wing blockers in Dion Sims and Arthur Lynch. Easy for fans to forget about an Arthur Lynch but the man who drafted him in the 5th round will not forget.

The name of the game here is getting better production out of the red zone. A tight end is a great way to do that. Miami is undersized at that position. So if they do anything major (which I doubt) they'll be looking to get a bigger pass catcher.

My guess is they'll look to the lower rounds again. Someone like C.J. Uzomah fits that bill perfectly. They might become fans of Jeff Heuerman but he may also go too high for them. They could like Clive Walford as I sense they're going to look more favorably toward players from just down the road.

The guy to keep an eye on though would be Oklahoma ex-QB Blake Bell. The Belldozer wasn't going to work out as a quarterback so the 6'6" & 259 pounder made the switch to tight end and has caught 4 touchdowns this year. Only Sterling Shephard has more scores (5) than him.

Hell, this is all the way from 2011:

If your tall passing game target is also your big, physical blocker you're killing two birds with one stone- Which I think is particularly valuable if you're keeping Clay. I'm not really someone who is particular averse to blocking specialists, but I think you can correct an inefficiency.

These guys do a pretty good job and should answer a lot of questions...http://overthecap.com/salary-cap/miami-dolphins/

Ya, Pouncey at 7.5 mil unless they sign him long term. Myself, I'd trade the guy. His attitude is horse****; on the other hand he is a very good player. I really think the raiders might be interested.

Cutting Wallace is still almost 10 mil in dead money, everyone should forget about this happening unless it really does come down to either him or Lazor and the brass choose Lazor.

Ellerbe is history even with the dead money but Wheeler will probably be kept one more year.

Even with Ellerbe gone we appear to be relatively deep at LB with some nice young talent, especially if we tank this season and the new coaching staff uses a base 3-4 defense.

Fields getting cut will save us a nice chunk of change. I like that Australian punter who kicks some Rugby style, forget his name. Got it....Tom Hackett, Utah.

I see Jesse James as being an enormously successful pro. I have watched several Penn state games and the way they use him is maddnening, and Hackenberg shouldn't be a college QB at any level IMO.

You put James on a good offense with a decent QB and he will flourish.

If we're accepting that a tight end doesn't have to be 6'6" to give us better red zone options, then I hope they look at E.J. Bibbs of Iowa State.

He is not a tall guy at only about 6'3" but he is very, very thick and powerful at 260+ pounds. He leads all Power Five conference tight ends in receptions and touchdowns.

The name of his game is HANDS. He flashes strong hands just about every single catch. This isn't a thing where he just has a highlight catch or two. He moves well too. I don't know that I've been tempted to make a Dwayne Allen comparison before but this guy fits.

It's not just about being able to make one-handed catches or to be able to pull a ball from your shoe tops. It's about being able to maintain concentration on the ball and bring it in while a guy's hands are all over you. It's about being able to transition from using your hands to get open to using those hands to pull in the football. He might be the best I've seen this year for all of that.

He tore his meniscus only a week before the start of the 2014 season. If you're wondering why he got off to a "slow" start with only 11 catches for 88 yards and 1 TD in his first four games, that's why. Since then he has 29 catches for 251 yards and 6 TDs in the last 5 games. That's the kind of injury that affects your whole year, but he's stepped up as the team's leading pass catcher and touchdown-scorer anyway.

Think of him as like a 6'3" & 260 lbs version of Jarvis Landry.

Here's his full work against Texas:

Jesse James is a junior and I doubt he'll leave before Hackenberg does.

No comment on saying Christian Hackenberg "shouldn't be a college QB at any level".

I didn't realize the difference in cap savings versus June 1st cutting Hartline and Wallace is about $1 million. Hartline is by far the better candidate of the two.

You should cut both of them. Hartline doesn't save anything with a June 1st designation, Wallace does.

Yes, of course I was exaggerating when making the comment about Hackenberg but the gist of the matter is that if Jesse James stays for another year with Hack at QB it probably isn't going to do him any good and the injury nemesis is always there. And then there is the coaching.

He has enough work on tape so that when he goes to the combine and kills it he will have a shot at the 2nd round and at least the early third. Yes, he could use another year to improve his blocking, but the rest of his resume is superb.

I tell you though, if we had half the running game y'all have.....OR, if y'all had half the defense we have. Anyway, y'all better get our state a damned Nat'l Championship! I have a whole damned dollar riding on it!

Then I hear things about Danny Mullen. My best friend is on the board of the State Alumni Assoc in Mobile and he tells me it's a no-brainer for him to take the position. Mullen is gonna get a raise, either way.

Anyway, good luck....esp, in the last game of the year. I'll be there!

I have not watched much college ball this year, but there isn't a KB or Dez Bryant in the draft. WRs that I want to see in Phins uniform are Dorsett first and Coley second from UM . (I'm not certain whether Coley is eligible.) They are quick and fast, and fit our quick passing yac offense. FSU triple covered Dorsett.
As far as a big end zone target, I don't see anyone at the top of the draft that will be available and worth it.

I am not sure whether we need a RB with Lazor's offense. However, I would love to see TJ Yeldon playing for us. Dude is powerful and explodes through the hole. Melvin Gordon is interesting because he does everything Miller does, plus has that second level speed that Miller does not. It's a tough call but I favor Yeldon because of the punishing power.

I'm thinking, if you have Dorsett who requires double coverage, and Wallace, and then Gordon or Yeldon, there is ample space for Juice and Clay over the middle to rumble.

I am content with the Oline. I don't see any significant needs there that require early picks.

Not sure about rather he would accept the position or not but I would have to think that Dan Mullen will be the Front runner for the UF job..I would rather Al Golden go to Fl. Lol and UM hire Mullen.

Some people believe that Jelani Jenkins is that stud, and that is why Danelle Ellerbe is gone. Others believe that raw prospects Tripp and Chris McCain are full of upside as well.

Should they really spend a lot of cap or high draft picks on a LB?? or if they do, which position?? what if the defensive scheme changes next year??

I wouldn't look for a splash at LB. I want to see what McCain and Tripp look like in their 2nd year before I go big at LB.

I think what would help the Dolphins more than anything on defense would be a true HOF bound shutdown corner or a an elite safety with extraordinary instincts and IQ to lead the defense.

The true shutdown corners only come around about once every seven years. I don't see one in this year's draft or next year's for that matter. In FA, Chris Harris looks good but is Jamar Taylor going to be matured by next year and ready for prime time. I am one who thinks so.

I like Michael Thomas to come back strong from his injury and be ready to win the nickel or at least the dime.

I want to draft CB/DB Eric Rowe from Utah because he already IS what we all hoped Walt Aikens might become.

The safety prospect that I really love is Jeremy Cash. Can anybody name a weakness in his game? The kid has it all........well, I guess he could be faster.

Which ones and why, pray tell?

I ask with this very fact in mind.........Tannehill is like,"Wild Thing", in the movie Major League, when it comes to the deep ball. The Dolphins are going to have bring in the WR's with extraordinary ball tracking skills. Ordinary WR's with average ball tracking skills like Wallace aren't going to cut it, no matter how athletic or sure handed they are.

Dolphins need receivers like Steve Smith or Randy Moss in his prime. Dolphins need a couple guys who can look back and know where Tanny's ball is going from almost the point of delivery; ya know, like a great center fielder knows how to move when the ball leaves the bat.

Ryan is so wild with the deep ball I don't ever see him honing that skill. IMO, Dolphins need to find complimentary WR's to help him with this weakness; because the rest of his game can be improved.

It will be hard to live up to last year's receiver class. Between Mike Evans, Sammy Watkins and Kelvin Benjamin at the top, and guys like Odell Beckham, Brandin Cooks, Allen Robinson, Jordan Matthews, Jarvis Landry, Martavis Bryant, Taylor Gabriel, Allen Hurns, John Brown and Donte Moncrief also making some noise...what a class. Crazy to think there could even be Golden Tates out there lurking that didn't do anything as rookies but who could be destined for great careers anyway.

But banner classes often come in twos, like the QB classes of 2011 and 2012, so who knows.

I will say this...lots of receivers I'd love to get my paws on. Kevin White, Amari Cooper, DeVante Parker, Sammie Coates and Nelson Agholor are all guys I love. Ty Montgomery, Jaelen Strong, Dorial Green-Beckham and Rashad Greene are all guys I have mixed feelings about for one reason or another, but all of whom can play. You've got a damn significant under-class too between Antwan Goodley, Tyler Lockett and Austin Hill.

Then you've got the diamonds in the rough like Jordan Taylor, Andre Davis, Dres Anderson, Justin Hardy, Vince Mayle, Tony Lippett, Jamison Crowder, Tommy Shuler, J.J. Worton. Throw in a Kasen Williams if you figure out what's wrong with him physically and he can get through it.

Some of the juniors I'm not sure which way they're leaning when it comes to staying in school or not. Guys like Stefon Diggs, Breshad Perriman and Duke Williams. But all three would interest me as well if available.

well, Ck explains below a above..I loved the class last year, ''really like ''is a notch below but still what it is, very good class..

I dont neccessarily agree that we need a moss or smith {my personal all time favorite}, we will have wallace next year, landry in the slot..you put a davonte parker, Ty montgomery, or tyler lockett in that 2nd slot and we are cooking..Cooper and white will be out of our range.

There's gonna be a very good receiver available when we pick in the first two rounds..

Ck, could you elaborate on your personal opinion about Ty Montgomery? He's enigmatic to me. Doesn't have to be a long analysis, just your overarching feelings on him.

I really like Kevin White for the Phins. Exactly the type of WR this team needs. Such a beast and constantly goes high to plunk the ball. I doubt both he and Cooper will fall to the Dolphins but damn, would be such an exciting pick for us.
