It ain't like he ****ed up his taxes or accidentally ran over his neighbors cat or something. It's hard to have sympathy for someone who is struggling under punishment for a crime that he knowingly committed.

It's much better something like this be over-punished rather than under-punished, as much as Goodell has made a dog's breakfast out of the whole deal.

I do not like to get into politics..but there is nothing wrong with me..I do not beat women and I try not to break the law. This is the last I will say on the matter but I have two very important questions. ..1.) Do you think this was the first time that he has done something like this? 2.) Do you think he will not do it again? But I do HATE the jets :) !!

He should have. I'd be all for one strike and out if a guy hits women or children. Done forever. Give back all bonus money.

Honestly, I think a lot of people want to be appalled over something like this and take the high moral ground, when this is something that sadly happens every single day in America. I have three questions-

    1) Have you ever raised your hand to a woman? And by that I mean punching, slapping, shoving, kicking, etc.

    2) Have you ever been tempted to raise your hands to a woman?

    3) Have you ever dated, been friends with or grew up with a girl/woman that "was asking for it"?

And again, before you take the high road with your answers, note that I am including when a woman gets emotional, takes a bat to your car, kicks you in the nuts and/or then spits in your face...all the while hysterically yelling at you for something that you may or may not have actually done. Because at the end of the day, we all know it's wrong to hit women...but we should also realize that if you answered even a "maybe" to 1, 2 or 3, then you could be in Ray Rice's shoes right now (just without the entire world judging you).

I have never hit any of the women I dated but Good Lord, I can remember a few times where my blood was boiling and it took every ounce of my strength to walk away. That's what a real man does but at the same time, I can completely see a decent guy having a momentary lapse of judgement. Rice has since married this gal and they're happy together, so obviously they've made amends. I just can't see holding it against him because we have no idea how it escalated to where it did.

Then you're a good guy that's never dated any crazy or super-emotional gals. I'm guessing that you're in the slim minority though, if everyone is 100% honest.

No 2 and 3 are irrelevant, you don't hit a woman period. I think people are mixing up Ray Rice the guy and Ray Rice the professional athlete. See that he has no previous strikes, I can get over it for Ray Rice the guy. Might have been a momentary lapse of judgement. But Ray Rice the athlete, as someone who represents an organization, a city, and a culture, it's inexcusable and I think the NFL needs to take a hard line stance on abuse.. Period. Make sure it's understood you don't get one freebie.

yeah, most people don't go around dating crazy chicks. that's not normal. Doesn't mean you don't get the urge to push your wife / GF when they get insanely crazy during that time of the month. But what separates a good person from the animals is the ability to overcome those desires. So, I can say that I'm happy to take the high road as should many. I'm not against Rice playing in the NFL, but it should be next season and for a team other than our own. The message it sends can change depending on when you sign the guy.
...and one more thing, you don't have to date/marry crazy chicks. it's a choice, not something that victimizes you.

People absolutely go overboard in demonizing people who are guilty of these crimes, but your premises are bad.

If you are involved with a woman you feel like you could hit or is deserving of being hit, you have an emotional maturity problem. There is a fundamental problem with you, the people you choose to involve yourself with, and it's a independent of whatever issue you're having with a woman.

There isn't some sudden momentarily loss of control. You're not put in a flight or fight situation with unconscious reaction. You've made a decision to hit the person. It might be influenced by other factors, but it's a decision. The people who are guilty of this have the ability and the responsibility to be aware of the repercussions, and don't deserve them any less due to passion.

They're not irrelevant at all...because if you are tempted to do something, or if you even think about hitting a woman, then you should understand exactly why domestic violence is such a huge problem in the United States. Then throw in alcohol, drugs and God knows what else people do these days...and it happens. Look at Ochocinco last year and his crazy-*** girlfriend stabbing him with a knife in the leg....it would have been inexcusable for him to knock her out as she tried to kill him? It's not as black and white as you make it out to be.

And besides, Rice did not get a "freebie"...he was convicted by law, suspended from his job and then later terminated when the media stirred things up. That doesn't make what he did okay by any means, butit happened and he made amends the best he could.

But all women are crazy from time to time.

And you wrote it as good any anybody could.

See above....I don't think anyone says to themselves, "Hmm, I think I'll go knock the crap out of a woman next Friday night." The circumstances that they put themselves in (drinking, drugs, peer pressure to party, etc.) all contributes though, and it only takes a millisecond for that fist to come forward. I don't think that's a broken person...they're human just like everyone else. I just wish more would realize that their lifestyle causes stuff like this to happen in the first place.

No, but it's not an unconscious decision either. You have a responsibility for your actions, and a responsibility for keeping your emotions under control and being fundamentally aware of actions with problematic consequences. If you cannot do that you are not a properly functional adult.

Leonard Little and Donte Stallworth both DWI/DUI and killed people and were allowed to played years after. We're dealing with football players not choirboys. That doesnt make what Rice did right by any stretch but he made a mistake. Ray Rice is a player whose donated countless hours to charitable causes and imo its important that the good stuff not be forgotten about. He ****ed up, he sat in timeout, now hes able to play and he can help someone win games. May as well be us. Cant be worse then Daniel freakin Thomas.

Some of you guys are nuts talking about "Oh I wouldnt sign Adrian Peterson". No, but youd be the first in line after he dropped a buck fifty on the Pats or Jets

This SO much. I honestly don't want Ray Rice, I don't think he's that good anymore. But, a lot of NFL players have done worse than he has. Bunch of Angels we have on this message board. LOL

    But, Adrian Peterson? YES Please!

Why would you expect anything else from a guy mentored by Ray Lewis? Would rather lose with honor and dignity than win and be a cheater like the Patriots or a team full of criminals like the Ravens.

So a thread where you guys are making cases for a woman beater and a child beater. this coming from a group of people who can't get over someone video taping from the wrong area of a stadium but trying to justify hitting defenseless people... especially children.

Because Leonard Little and Donte Stallworth were under-punished by the league, we should be OK with the Dolphins signing Ray Rice? Do you think someone being punished means you shouldn't draw negative conclusions about their misdeed?

I know this and as a programmer I cannot believe they automated something the public could manipulate. Validate ALL data that you do not create is a very essential rule when coding and obviously they were too lackadaisical in that regard.

Didn't call them racist, just mentioned how the franchise isn't all rainbows and unicorns, they make plenty of mistakes that the majority overlook because they win.

Rice has been a workhorse his entire career, college and pros. He was still really good in 2012. Then the wheels fell off in 2013, for no apparent reason other than he'd been worn down by the previous workload. Unless one is convinced that 2013 was just an aberration, he is not going to be an upgrade even without the off field issues. So, considering how his production fell so severely in 2013, and the off field issues and the distractions they could bring, I see no reason to sign him from a talent upgrade standpoint, or a public relations standpoint.
I think his being cut turned out to be a blessing in disguise for the Ravens this year. If he'd remained and been their starter I do not believe he'd have been able to give them the production they've gotten out of Justin Forsett, who looks like the RB we should have signed rather than Moreno.

I don't want Rice for football reasons. I don't approve of what he did at all, I mean...especially since he just balled his fist and punched her in the face. However I don't believe playing in the NFL is a privilege any more than any other job is. He has a certain talent that he uses in exchange for financial security. No other job would completely black ball him out of his career (except maybe if he worked with children, battered women ect) so I don't see why the NFL should.

If someone wants him talent wise, he should be signed. And if he messes up again he should be punished by whatever means are agreed upon under the CBA and law.
