Since 2004 there have been 80 games in which one QB had a QB rating of at least 146 (what Manning had in the 4th quarter against Miami). Those QBs' teams have won 77 (96%) of those games. In the last 100 games in the NFL in which one QB had a QB rating between 82 and 85 (where Tannehill was in the 4th quarter against Denver), those QBs' teams have won 44 (44%) of those games.
Right... and as a rookie HC for a Browns team he was rebuilding from scratch, Belichick made some questionable decisions at times and was called out for it - just like Philbin is being questioned and called out now. Main difference now being that Philbin has a very talented team this season that is underachieving on defense and special teams. Stop acting like these guys are something special until they prove something. Philbin can start that by going 4-1 or 5-0 and getting us into the playoffs this season.

I agree with you here, and I attribute some of it to not having enough situational awareness to include scrambling and running for first downs on his own, its a non existent part of his game at this point, and I hope he understands it.
The point is that Manning's level of QB play in the 4th quarter was much more likely to prevail over Tannehill's. I knew the history of data behind that statement when I made it originally. When you mentioned something about sample size, I simply provided the lager sample data as a courtesy to you and others.
I've watched phillip rivers run three times on his own, converting 2 for first downs on third down..keeping the drive alive......phillip rivers.
Philip Rivers has always been someone I've rooted for. Such a competitor. Yeah, he might talk $h!t during games, but man, that guy just wants to win.

Extend Philbin? Why? I think this team is doing every despite it's head coach and defensive coordinator. I'd fire them both unless they made it impossible to fire them. 10-6/11-5? They stay. Anything less than 10 wins and I'd **** can the both of them.
I agree. I think if he can learn to climb in the pocket and know when to takeoff he'd be very dangerous. I know Tannehill has said that he likes working with Zach Taylor, but I can't help but imagine what a veteran QB coach could do for him and his game.

Nice post. Tannehill did some things in the pocket in the 2nd half of the Green Bay game that I hadn't seen him do before. I agree that a vet coach could help him a lot, but I wonder if "as the game slows down" (quotes because it's such a cliche) he starts to play more calmly and steps up, sidesteps, etc. because getting the ball downfield is a fun game that he's really good at rather than some life-and-death struggle, as it was early on.
I was referring to philbins ***** call vs greenbay on 3-9 to run the ball instead and give the ball back to rodgers. You are smart enough to know the pats right now are light years better than the pats from week 1.Going into today they were averaging 39 pts a game in the last 8 weeks. As for harbaugh please he had his team in superbowl and what 2 nfc championships games .We are scratching for first wildcard apperance.
One dropped pass and one late flag after a lot of begging are the two things that saved today's game from being comfortably in double digits. In order to say that Philbin should be extended, it's not necessary to compare him side-by-side with a hall of famer like Belichick. The comparison doesn't do Joe any favors, IMO.
That's right, it does not cause Joe is better in his first three seasons than Belichick. As for Harbaugh, he's been allowed to ride Baalke's coattail for far too long. He was never tasked with rebuilding a franchise like Belichick and Joe, Harbaugh is not in the same stratosphere. I hope he goes to the Raiders and they give him full control, let's see what he can do with the Raiders as the man.

The pass offense is among the worst in the league in efficiency, and that's going to make it hard for a team to be any better than mediocre, regardless of what it has going on elsewhere.

PUNT week 6 Rams 3 point lead with 2 minutes left. PUNT 2013 Week 2 Colts 4 point lead with 4 minutes left. PUNT Week 6 Bills 1 point lead with 3 minutes left. You know the goal is to run the clock out right? We saw what happened on pass attempts in both games -- incomplete passes. Which, last I checked, do not take much time off the clock. Its much more likely our team, with Ryan Tannehill under center, will pick up the first down AND take time off the clock by running it every down. In fact, our one and only offensive closeout under Philbin came against the Colts when we did run it all 3 downs, and we got the first and got to kneel down.

Ironically, a run play is more likely to get the yardage for a first down on 3rd and long than a pass play. The erroneous thinking here is that pass plays are more likely to be successful, whereas they really are not, while they run the risk of course of taking no time off the clock in a situation in which you want the clock moving. Of course anyone who watches the game on a regular basis like the folks here surely notice that there are lots of pass plays (about 40 to 50%) that are not successful. Simply calling a pass play in itself doesn't guarantee a successful result. Because football is an aggressive sport, and many fans fashion themselves as similarly aggressive, I think they simply want the head coach of their favorite team to act "tough," without regard for any of the real data surrounding the issue. I'd rather have my coach consider the data and be smart, rather than tough.
