Ed Reed is currently a announcer on Inside the NFL. He has been using this platform to let it be known there are certain teams he might be available to should the need arise for their playoff run. During a conversation about the Dolphins Reed could be seen mulling around near the table where the other 3 announcers were conducting their analyzing of the new and up coming game. He kept walking back and forth, back and forth. very distracting. When the topic of the Dolphins came up he paused by the table leaned in and said "now there is a secondary I would be available to help out" Any thoughts? IMO Reed is as good at if not better, - still then half the guys we got
would definitely be worth a look who knows. What's the worst that could happen? We just don't offer him anything MY only thought is we would have to clear a roster spot, who would or could we chop I'm positive he meant as a player and not a coach LOL when Cleveland became a topic Reed said "now there's a secondary I am NOT available to"
Jimmy!! I'm sorry, I jumped the gun there. Who is "Jimmy Wilson", Alex? Ok. I'll take "Inanimate Objects With Better Pursuit Skills Than Phillip Wheeler" for $400.
I saw the same thing. It was awkward and funny. I would take a flyer. I don't know though, he has too much grey hair. lol
that was my first thought based on what I've seen. But I would want to look at more tape before I messed up the guys life like that.
Based on Reed's most recent play, plus his time away (conditioning), I do not think he would be much help as a player.
Agreed. Not to mention he can't stay healthy... He probably pulled his hamstring leaning into the camera on inside the nfl.
I think he could definatly help this secondary. Probably better than Wilson, and Don Jones and Staord
I think he'd be more needed here as a mentor than for his physical skills. I love me some Ed Reed, though. If he could get with some of these guys and teach them how to be better professionals, it could only help.
If he had mastered time travel technology he'd have already contacted the team back when he was still a good player.
He certainly could help us out....as a coach. As a player he looked done last year. As a coach though...count me in. Id be very much in favor.
He can't be tried for it in court, but he was stealing money by way of fraud in Houston. They signed him expecting to get an NFL caliber player.
Yeah, he's an awesome athlete and a very smart player, but the chances of him being in game-shape are slim to none. So I'd respectfully pass, but I would certainly invite him for a workout if he was interested.
Umm, Baltimore may currently have the worst safety play in the NFL, why wouldn't he just go help them?
Doesn't matter, because conditioning IS a factor. May as well say, if age was not a factor would you be interested? Either question is moot, because age and condition are definite factors.
Even if for just 3rd and long situations, Dime look......Delmas, Jones and Reed free-roaming 3 deep with Grimes, Jenkins and Finnegan underneath, thats just deadly. Not to mention his smarts would help Davis and Taylor in the locker room. Hell even Aikens and Wilson. I'd do it.
The UM homer in me says sign him for the rest of the season. One of my favorite players of all time. There isn't a safety in the NFL right now who makes the impact Reed did in his prime
He's done physically but the fire obviously still burns. I imagine he'll get into coaching and that TV could be temporary while he hangs onto the possibility of getting one more shot in the league. He's a football guy, uncannily smart football mind. I expect he'll coach. Just wonder at what level.
Bring him home to Miami..best case..he can make a few big plays for us..worst case...he helps coach our young DB's on how to get into correct position and learn how to play smart, championship football.
people need to remember Cris Carter when he signed with us. That would be Ed Reed now. people are saying the same things.
I loved him as a player, but I don't know if he still has it in him. I wouldn't mind him around the team though. Kind of like when we brought in Al Harris a few seasons ago.
I wanted to sign charles woodson 3 years ago when he was available, I would bring the man in to see if he's serious.
If we were to do that it would need to be now so that he can digest the basics of the playbook and work into shape for the postseason. I imagine he'd be a center fielder on obvious pass downs and not much more but our third and long defense is horrendous at times so I'm okay with that.
"wasn't terrible" isn't an adjective that I want someone described as in our secondary. ALthough, I wish Jimmy Wilson would ascend to that level. Thinking Ed Reed can come out of nowhere and insert into this lineup and make real impact is wishful thinking.
I don't think anyone has asserted that he should be put into the starting lineup or that he'd be a huge difference. Just that his experience could be helpful to younger players and he may be a decent situational pass defender.
A big issue w/ an older player like Reed is that they can't survive an entire season; they can't recover from the grind over a period of months. But if he's in shape, has fresh legs and only has to play a few games that is a much more manageable task. Having said that Jones has been pretty dang good and Delmas solid so where is he helping? We need corner help not safety help.
I'm not going to claim to have broken down film of Ed Reed last year. From what I have heard/read he wasn't very good. But I think I'd still bring in him for a look-see. Unless/until we do, I wouldn't assume he is in bad shape or poorly conditioned. If he is, we'd find out then, but maybe he's kept himself in very good shape. I see him as a relatively low risk, high reward guy. As a CF and a very smart player, if he has declined a lot physically, i think he'd play pretty conservatively to try to make sure he doesn't give up the big play. But even with that, with his smarts/instincts he could easily be a guy who makes a critical INT or two key games that continues our season. So in that regard, I see the reward as pretty high. And if he happens to be in great shape (which I wouldn't assume but no harm in seeing), then he definitely has something to offer. Even young players can have good years and bad years (ee, e.g., Reshad Jones). As an older player, it's easy to assume that a bad year last year means he is done. But that may not be the case at all. There have been a good number of heady DBs who have made notable "comebacks" in their mid-late 30s to be key contributors at S, e.g., Ronnie Lott, Rod Woodson, Charles Woodson, Darren Sharper, Troy Vincent, Eugene Robinson, Paul Krause, Aeneas Williams, etc.
I'm sure he could make a tackle better than Jimmy Wilson.... but then again so could most anyone. Aside from that, Ed Reed would provide absolutely no tangible upgrades to our secondary.
were in a playoff race with good probability to make it.. no Finnegan..no Taylor..no Thomas....No Davis...if one more secondary player goes out, were done.
