Why can't there be a separate coach dedicated only to game-time management?

I'm as upset as most here that Philbin wasn't fired. Upset enough I decided to post for the first time HA! In a nutshell, I think Philbin is better at building a team than leading a team. His lack of ability to out-think the opposing coach during game-time (except for halftime adjustments) has clearly cost us some games.

So, why not delegate his weakness to someone else? Why not have a coach dedicated to being a game manager? This shouldn't weaken the position of "head coach" any more than offensive and defensive coordinators already do. I'd be fine with Philbin continuing to build this team IF someone else took over the within-game decision duties Philbin has.

At what point does the HC play a role?

The fact someone had to make his thread says everything about philbin. This was probably the first season I felt we would of made the playoffs with a better coach. His timeout management is horrible but at this point you just need to ride with it nothing we can do.

That's the problem I have with Philbin. What exactly does he bring to the table if we have to delegate out all of the HC's responsibilities?

    He's not a good game-time coach.
    He hasn't proven to be a good X & O's guy.
    He's not a motivator.
    He's not a strong leader.
    He isn't a "player's coach".

He's an organizer and a delegator. I don't think that is worthy of keeping your job as a HC.

preparation for the game, including during offseason. I guess in Philbin's case, let him continue with his half-time adjustments. But clock management, decisions whether to punt, kick a FG or go for it on 4th down, or to pick from one of several possible game plans, are left to the game manager.

Nothing wrong with delegating if it works. We don't know precisely who is responsible for what, looking from the outside, but many game-time decisions are so clearly on Philbin and so bad that it's worth delegating that IMO.
