I've bounced back on forth on MW over the last few weeks. The only ideal scenario is that we somehow find a trade partner and recoup something for him, however that probably isn't going to happen with MW's big contract.

When I think about MW as a Dolphin I have a hard to time getting over the fact that he's such a poor fit for this offense. Not only does that rob MW of an ability to contribute in the way he does best--as well as place him in a psychologically-stressful position--but I think it also undermines the kind of things that Philbin, Lazor and Tannehill most want to do with this offense. In other words, having the wrong player can actually be a detriment at times. When I consider how expensive he is and how unhappy he must be playing is this style of offense, I think it spells 'cut.'

That said, if MW goes I think we're going to have to bite the bullet and keep Hartline--possibly even at his current $6M figure. It would be obvious that in that case we should make some attempt to restructure but to me. He's clearly the better fit for Tannehill and Lazor, even if he's limited in YAC and TDs. I don't see us losing both of our outside WRs and coming out unscathed on the other side.

One alternative to that was the notion was the argument that Philbin and Hickey wouldn't make any moves that didn't have a "win now" feel. However, now that Philbin is set to get an extension, I think that "win now" argument is undermined.

It sounds to me like they're going to try and trade him.

Basically he had an opportunity to sweep it under the rug and pretend that there is no pressing "Mike Wallace question". The thinking would be listen, he got emotional during a game, said something he probably shouldn't have, we took care of it, and that's all there is to it. He's on the team and we love him.

Tannenbaum didn't do that. His tone about it was almost solemn. It's clearly an issue that is still under discussion and debate within the facility. That doesn't bode well.

It certainly would be typical Philbin to get rid of him.

Let's create another hole before filling in the holes we already have. Of course, the Dolphins would do that. We should be adding Kevin White to core with Walalce. Not adding him to a Landry/Hartline core.

I like Wallace and want to keep him but if we cut him and that causes a regression and we finish 7-9, which causes the Great Purge, the it's a sacrifice I can live with.

Within the confines of this offense, replacing MW's production isn't hard to do.

Now, can we afford to go out and sign a quality FA? Do we want to draft another WR in the 1st or 2nd round?

Those are poignant questions. But based on the Green Bay/Philbin model I think it's very likely we do wind up drafting WR in the 2nd round anyway.

Color me disappointed if we enter the draft with Hartline as our primary wide out. It's not like his production to contract value is much better. Hoodwinking someone in a trade changes this of course...

And that's a pretty difficult thing to digest, when his salary cap hit is the higest on the team, and the highest in the league at his position.

Obviously the better-case scenario would be to have the production of your player with the highest cap hit be the hardest to replace! :)

Naturally, but when you factor in the actual cap savings its far far from worth it. Ive lived through the James McKnight, Marty Booker, Greg Camirllo, Davone Bess days. Not interested in living through that again just because our coach doesnt like to be argued with. Especially when we have heard from a good source that he is the hardest working WR on the team.

Complain about Wallace's deficiencies all you want, and he does have them, but they better know dafuq they're doing if they get rid of him. This team already has a ton of holes in significant need of addressing, without adding another WR to the list.

I can see them using that money to find a more physical FA. But your probably correct they will make a whole before having the correct piece to replace it.

Wallace has one skill. A skill that hasn't translated with this offense in two different systems. His salary to production ratio has made him a candidate to be traded/cut even without his tantrum. It's not surprising no one in the organization has publicly committed to his future. Nothing to see here.

For all his shortcomings, the guy easily could have 20+ tds in his first 2 years with miami. It makes no sense to cut wallace THIS offseason. You dont save much of anything. Not worth it. That what scares me, if there's a dumb decisions to be made, the dolphins and philbin will make it. Let's lose our only 2 good weapons in the passing game. Then next year thill will have a legit excuse when his weapons suck. Ofcourse fans use the receiver excuse now when not using the ol excuse.

You save $9.9 million. That's the money he is owed this season. That's a lot of money.

From my understanding the dolphins would only save 2.5 million on the cap by cutting him this year. Unless the info is wrong, you don't cut your most productive wr by a long shot for 2.5 million. It'd cost more than 2.5 to replace him with a lesser talented player.

    IMO you are confusing yourself.

Q: How much money is Mike Wallace set to be paid in 2015?
    A: Approximately $9.9 million.
Q: How much money is therefore saved if Wallace is not paid in 2015?
    A: Approximately $9.9 million.

It's as easy as that. People are way too damned caught up in the salary cap and they commonly confuse themselves over it. Every dollar you pay to a player has to be expensed, either now or later.

Will say this though. One potential complication is that approximately $3.0 million of that $9.9 million is guaranteed. However that's not as big a deal as people would make of it because if Miami were to cut Mike Wallace I am positive he will make more than $3.0 million in 2015 from his new team, and Miami has been inserting offset language in their contracts for many years which prevent the infamous "double dip".

He's guaranteed 3 million isn't he? How much do the dolphins save on the cap next year? I don't care how much ross saves. How much it saves on the cap is what's important to me, seeing as how they're going to need to bring in talent.

What about cap hit? That only applies to certain contract situations and only if the player is cut (as opposed to traded) right?

I don't mind trading Wallace as long as Hartline isn't here either next year, he is a bigger waste of money IMO.. If we keep Wallace, we need a true #1 WR as that is something Wallace will simply never be and will benefit from.

  26. CaribPhin

    CaribPhin Guest

Were he to be traded, I'm looking at Arizona and Philly. Arizona is seemingly willing to eat a big contract in Larry Fitzgerald. Arians has history with Wallace and they could potentially be willing to swap Larry for Wallace. Miami would want to restructure that contract though. I think Philly might be interested because they clearly were not as good with Jackson's vertical routes missing. They just paid Riley Cooper a good sized contract and saw him under-perform. Maclin is a free agent and if he progresses, Jordan Matthews brings some similar things to the field. Maclin was on IR the playoff season so his skill-set could be viewed as expendable while Foles didn't look nearly as good with Jackson gone. If we do business with either of these teams, we would probably need to go after one of their receivers. I'm leaning Larry's way because of size which could help improve our red zone efficiency.

Riley Cooper might be worse then Hartline. They are both similar in that they are both waste of contracts, that money could of went to better WR's on both sides.

DeSean had a bag of issues in Philly, I dont think Chip thought he was worth the money he was getting paid (he disappeared against the Saints in last years playoff game), I also know a few stories about DJax.
He made a mess at a strip club that a Russian Mafia owned before the playoffs last year, Russian Mafia showed up to Eagles practice facility in a limo with assault rifles ready to kill DeSean, Limo driver wasn't comfortable with it so he took off, I spoke to limo driver, that was a story that was swept under the rug nicely by Philly.
I saw pictures of an old friend of mine smoking weed with DJax back in 2010.. All in All, DJax got away with a lot of **** in Philly that Chip was just tired of it and pulled the plug, because on the field, he is nothing more then a better version of Mike Wallace that can run a nice dig route and 9 route. Jeremy Maclin is a way better WR then DJax and way less of a headache.

Nah, Chip is an offensive guru, he can find a Wallace clone easily in the middle rounds of the draft. He's not the type of guy that needs to make a trade for an overpriced deep route runner. Also, I think he is more focused on trying to find a way to get Mariota (if he declares, which is highly likely) at the moment.

Arizona is a more likely suitor (L. Fitzgerald for Wallace makes the most sense), watch out for a J. Gordon for M. Wallace swap as well. Don't be surprised if NE makes a surprise offer too.

I think you're over simplifying this. I don't care if Ross saves a couple million by replacing wallace 9.9 million and 10 tds with a 4.9 million player who gets 5tds. I'm concerned about the 2.5 million we would save in order to go out and replace wallace production. We would end up paying more for less production, at least in the short term. If you want to cut wallace, this isn't the year to do it. If it were as easy as you're trying to make it sound, Phillip Wheeler would've been gone already.

Are you serious? Josh Huff is already almost at Wallace's level, and he is only in year 1 and hardly saw any playing time on offense this year. Let's not make Wallace out to be something you can't find easily in the draft. He's a one trick pony that has speed, like thats real hard to find now a days. You got a better chance of seeing Chip make an offer for RT17 then you do of seeing him make an offer for a overpriced 1 trick pony. Since Wallace is a Dolphin, you seem to think he has a higher value then he actually does. MIAMI is the idiots that gave this guy a HUGE contract.

What you're not understanding is that how much money Steve Ross saves IS how much the Dolphins save on the cap.

Finkle is Einhorn. Einhorn is Finkle.

It's just a matter of when that money will be saved. And that's not as important a question as you think it is because the salary cap is very manipulatable any given year. You can transfer cap space forward, etc.
