    The Gang Hires a GM

Coming of a season in which you finished 10-6 and narrowly missing the playoffs, you might now blame Philadelphia Eagles Jeffrey Lurie for standing pat and not making drastic changes. This is the owner, after all, who employed former coach Andy Reid for thirteen years. Reed, like Lurie, seemed reticent to go all in with the Eagles, instead opting for a conservative approach. While this lead to a lot of winning seasons, it almost always ended in bitter playoff disappointment. Even after a trip to the Super Bowl, Eagles fans had to be asking themselves if it ever got better.

All of that changed, of course, when Lurie made the gutsy choice to hire known risk taker Chip Kelly. Rumors abounded this season about Kelly clashing with the current front office, particularly former General Manager Howie Roseman. While it didn't appear to affect the team on the field (although let's not discuss that late season collapse), it was clear something had to give. Surprisingly, this lead to Roseman being moved into the role of Executive Vice President of Football Operations, which, while a promotion, will prevent him from having direct oversight to player acquisition.

So what does Lurie do? For the second time in two years, he goes outside the box, making the gutsy call to bring in a mysterious Viking who goes by the name of Odin. Our sources say that this may have been brought on by stumbling across a rejected script for It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia.

Who thinks hiring a drunken Viking to be a badass GM is a good idea?

The mercurial Odin has received a bit of a reputation as a mercenary for hire, with one-year stops in places like Tampa Bay, Kansas City, Cleveland, and Minnesota. Typically, these hires have been preceded by some sort of a press conference. Not the case with this hire - we received a bare-bones press release stating that Odin was "here to help Chip win as quickly as possible" and that "it's not about him."

Kelly and Odin will have to start with the coaching staff. Former Offensive Coordinator Pat Shurmur was poached by the football hellhole known as the Jacksonville Jaguars, while former Defensive Coordinator was unceremoniously dumped just hours after Odin was hired. Considering how poorly the Eagles defense was last year, especially in the secondary, seeing Davis get sacked did not come as a surprise.

The team has already moved to replace Shurmur, bringing in Marc Trestman. Trestman has a bit of a reputation of a "quarterback whisperer," having coaxed huge seasons out of otherwise borderline players like Scott Mitchell, Jake Plummer, and Rich Gannon. We have no idea what this portends for the quarterback position in Philadelphia. Nick Foles is coming off of injury, and Mark Sanchez looked good in limited relief last year. (But let's face it, he's still Mark Sanchez, and expected to be a free agent) There's of course a myriad of directions they could go, in the draft, via trade or free agency. It will be interesting to see how Kelly and Trestman, both known as progressives offensively, coexist.

Chip Kelly’s reaction to adding another future-looking stat-head to the staff in Marc Trestman. Dem stats.

On the defensive side things are also still very much up in the air. It seemed as if the Eagles were searching for an identity on that side of the ball last year. Rumors are that Kelly and Odin are looking for someone who will scheme as aggressively on defense as Kelly and Trestman are expected to scheme on offense. The Eagles have been interviewing candidates and are expected to finalize the hire sometime this week.

@Jason LaCanGlazer Insider source says Chip has already complained about his new GM. His exact words: "I miss that little jew bastard"

@Jason LaCanGlazer No doubt vikings are notorious for raping and pillaging. Or is it pillaging THEN raping?

Updating a previous item, the Philadelphia Eagles came to terms with Steve Spagnuolo earlier this morning. In a press release, Chip Kelly noted that Spagnuolo was "coming home," as he had previously served as an assistant under former Eagles Defensive Coordinator Jim Johnston. Like Johnston, Spagnuolo is know to take an aggressive approach on defense, utilizing exotic blitzes up front. His hire may indicate that a move back to the 4-3 is in the Eagles future. "We want to go as fast on defense as we do on offense," stated Kelly. "That's what we're going to do on both sides of the ball. Go fast."
