Just got an update on Team Stream (Bleacher Report) stating that we're discussing a 7 year $105 million dollar deal with him. Didn't see it posted yet?

Sounds fair based on his play, good for the team, and good for Tannehill.

Good Deal. 15 million a year is fair.

It's basically a two year deal, performance based. He's going to have to actually make the playoffs to see that third year.

They basically already have him for the next two years if they want to pick up his 5th year option which will pay him $15 million dollars. Therefore if the contract is only guaranteed for two years, as you state. It just means they are going to give him a raise for the 2015 season and the $15 million dollars they would have had to pay him once they picked up the option for the 2016 season.

While I am still not convinced he is the long term answer for the Dolphins at the QB position. I have no problem with the new contract, as long as it is something the Dolphins can get out of it without a big cap hit after just two years.

If Tannehill does become a top ten QB, it is a good deal for the Dolphins long term. If he doesn't turn out be be the long term answer, the team can bid him adios after the 2016 season and go in search of their next QB of the future. It's a win-win for the Dolphins either way.

The difference between Tannehill's current ranking and ranking as the 10th best QB in the league last season is about 2.2 if you go by passer rating. The season before, his 2014 rating would have ranked 9th. Same with the year before that. Top 10 doesn't mean much these days. Heck Ryan Fitzpatrick and Carson Palmer both made the top 10 in limited action. I think a more descriptive goal would be appropriate.

Something that I mentioned a while ago about these deal structures with respect to quarterbacks and incentives and whatnot.

If the bottom line is the contract is going to make you "locked in" so to speak because of a combination of guaranteed money and/or the fear of quarterback controversy, then the fact you have incentives in the contract that allow you to pay the guy only $12 million as opposed to $17 million aren't going to matter in the long run because if he's not a guy that can attain those incentives and be worth $17 million then you should probably be actively trying to get someone better than him. But now you can't, because you feel "locked in", whether that be due to the contract or because you're afraid what everyone's gonna think when you draft a falling Teddy Bridgewater in the 1st round.

He is just never healthy anymore, which is his problem, hes a good QB when he is playing but it seems very difficult for him to make it through a 16 game season.

I know. But that's again limited action. I really want him to be good in AZ but he didn't hit up against some of those good defenses they played later in the season.

To me, a QB's passer rating doesn't make him a top ten QB in the NFL. Just about any QB can throw short passes all game long and end up with a high completion rate.

While Tannehill completed a high percentage of his passes last season. He was also near the bottom in regards to yards per pass attempt. So passing is merely one aspect of a top ten QB IMO.

To me, a top QB is one that can consistently lead his team to game winning drives in the 4th quarter of close games. He has to show that he can lead his team to the playoffs on a regular basis and he has to be able to play well enough in the playoffs to give his team the opportunity to advance once they make the playoffs.

The most important aspect in regards to being a top 10 QB to me is that the QB has the full respect of his teammates and a belief by those teammates that their QB is a true leader on their team.

At this stage of his career, Tannehill has never led his team to the playoffs and I don't know if he has proved to his teammates that he has what it takes to be the type of QB who can lead this team beyond mediocrity.

Perhaps Tannehill can prove to be this type QB over the next two years, but until he does, he still remains a huge question mark at the QB position,IMO.

I tell you, I have always liked Carson Palmer, and I think he could take his team deep into the playoffs next year. Thought he could this year. Still has one hell of a deep ball. Really hate how his career has panned out.

My take away is now we have lost the cheap Qb contract edge we had in FA.

Not saying bad nor good, moving forward his deal will play a large role in our flexibility.

Most of his career he has always missed games due to injury. Im not sure how many full seasons he has under his belt but it cant imagine it being more the four full 16 game seasons.

Edit: he has 6 full seasons, I stand corrected.

Seriously dude, do you think there are 10 QBs in the NFL like that now?

In 2014 I count Brady, Manning, Luck and Rodgers and maybe Wilson. Brees, Rivers, Kapaernick, Dalton, Flacco, and other high profile QBs didn't do what you describe in 2014.

What you're describing is what only the top 3 to 5 QBs in the league can do.

TERRIBLE contract. Especially if most is guaranteed.

Tannehill is the definition of Average who can't win big games. Singing on for 7 years of 8-8.... thanks but no thanks.
