Boxing is still bigger in Central America and Europe but not South America. Brazil is one of MMA's strongholds. It's still close in the US although I see most polls have MMA with a slight lead overall and a bigger lead among young males who are obviously the biggest sport consumers. I expect that lead to grow as there are far more kids participating in MMA than boxing and to a lesser extent women get to participate. Even listening to reports of the fight today, the majority of the talk is about how boxing is dead or how boring the fight was. There is some push back from boxing defenders, but other than the group who already loved boxing, nobody else seemed to enjoy the fight.

I'd say argentina is a boxing strong hold with lots of talent coming out and already out. It's huge in mexico, puerto rico and panama. Now with cuba opening up I would expect to see more talent coming from there.
I'm not sure what you mean by women get to participate?
Most of the pushback against boxing has come due to the ppv route it took. I think now with more boxing being shown on tv for free it will start to become part of the younger generation again. Not to mention boxing is generational now. You have fathers teaching their kids. I highly doubt that's going to go away anytime soon.
As for all the talk about boxing dying, people have been waiting for it to die for awhile. Mainly because as I stated above there was a disconnect with viewers due to ppvs. I expect that the tv versions (NBCs mainly) will greatly help the sport as well as ESPN now agreeing to the pbc. I would point out though that mayweather v pac didn't draw as many viewers as it did in spite of boxing itself.
Really most of the talk is due to peoples disappointment with the results. I've seen everything from it was fixed to mayweather ran, even though compubox suggests differently. That tells me it has more to do with anger over mayweather winning than anything.

I feel like I'm the only one that enjoyed this fight. Mayweather neutralized Manny's footwork and Manny got scared of throwing punches after 5 rounds. Was honestly pretty masterful to watch people always complain why does no one chase Mayweather well bc you eat the right cross all night.

There are prominent female MMA fighters. I couldn't name a female boxer or even know if women's boxing exists on any professional level.

And boxing has been dying. It drops in popularity every year. I remember when the heavy weight champ was the baddest man on the planet and everybody knew his name. If you asked 100 random people on the street who the heavy weight champ was now, I doubt you'd find 5 who knew. I don't know a single kid who boxes. I asked my 14 year old son if he knew any kid who boxes and he didn't know of one. He knows of dozens of kids involved in martial arts. Boxing has been going away for awhile. It will never disappear entirely, but it's no more than a niche participant sport in the US.

ali and mia st john were pretty big. Anywho, they have regular fights now. New mexico produces a lot of champions. Amateur wise it is huge. I can tell you I've met the Colorado and New Mexico state champions.

I know lots of kids who box. Heavyweight doesn't have a ginormous name so instead, much like the 80s, welterweight/middleweights took over. It'll move back and forth like it always has. The US has a lot of up and comers. I don't see it being a niche sport at all. Boxing has always co existed with martial arts. Through the karate craze, the kung fu craze, the judo craze, and so on. I'm not sure why now, all of a sudden it would die out.

at this time my only question concern is who will take mayweathers/pacmans place? They were pretty big. I can see Wilder maybe, but he has a lot of work to do. GGG and kovalev will be pretty popular as well as Lucas Matthyse. All these guys are sluggers.

You say coexist. I would say it's been in decline for decades. It used to be one of the most popular sports in the country. On Mike and Mike they said it was now 10th. Reality is there aren't 10 sports I watch. It's no longer on my radar. Perhaps you're in some niche area that has lots of kids who box. Nationally, that's not the case. Like I said I don't know of a single kid who boxes. I know kids who play football, baseball, basketball, soccer, MA, gymnastics, shooting sports, golf, hockey, tennis, lacrosse , wrestling, skiing, snowboarding, fishing, hunting. That's moe than a dozen sports where I know of at least some child participants. I know of none in boxing. And many of the ones I listed are nothing more than niche sports. You're in denial if you think boxing is more than a niche sport among kids already.

"in denial". Not really. Check out the golden gloves tourney. It's huge every year. They have city, regional, state, then nationals. I don't know where you think all those junior and regular golden glovers are coming from. Maybe you're in an area where not a lot of people happen to box. I talk to boxers all over of all ages, so no it isn't just my surroundings, although when I go into gyms I do see tons of kids there. It may not be as huge as it was in the 70s but like I said that will change now that they are bringing it back to regular tv, assuming they do it right. MMA killing it? Probably not. It getting smaller? possibly, but we're a long way off from that happening IMO. All it would take is one large superstar and it will rebound again. We're losing two atm. That will hurt as much as losing the last 80s class did. Or the 70s heavyweight. Or the 50s heavyweights. Or the 40s middleweights/welterweights. etc etc

It's smaller than it was in the 70s when it was huge. It's also smaller than it was in the 80 which is smaller than it was in the 70s. It diminished more in the 90s. And it's diminished more since the 90s. It's denial to pretend that that isn't a sustained decline. Before the fight there was all this talk about how it would save boxing or bring back casual fans. Now the talk is about how the fight failed I that respect and that casual fans found it boring. Sure a dynamic personality could attract casual fans but there hasn't been one for a long time. Mayweather certainly didn't do it.

for a long time? You mean like tyson? Mayweather did do it, he created a personality people hated much like Sugar Ray Robinson, Pac was a global icon. I'm not sure where you get no dynamic personality. Speaking of denial. Again, boxing was larger in the 70s because it was on main stream tv. Now that that's slowly coming back, most of the reviews/ratings seem to be ok thus far, I don't see mma killing it.

Finishers are more entertaining than point fighters. It doesn't matter which combat sport is being discussed. I love jujitsu. Submission matches are way more entertaining than point matches. As soon as the best boxer is a finisher boxing will be cool again.

That being said, boxing as a youth sport has taken a dive across the country over the last few decades. I don't see how this is debatable.

I used to be a big fan of boxing, the lack of really compelling fighters, horrid corrupt officiating/judges and no action fights like this one kind of wore me down. I could watch a Hagler vs Hearns fight every night and never get bored. The heavy weights kind of suck now which I think makes the sport less fun to watch.

I have to admit, even aside from the obvious thing that Mayweather is a horrible human being that should probably be in jail, I just can't stand his fights. I get that he scores and boxes technically great, but he has never had a fight I would watch again and he just doesn't interest me as a fan. I respect his skill just won't pay a dime to watch him play defense and "score", to me its not what the sport is about.

Yes, Tyson. That was back in the late 80s and then 90s. Since then the casual fan hasn't cared about boxing. The fact is that boxing has been declining in popularity for decades now. I don't even get how this is a debate? When I said that the talk before the fight was how boxing needed this to bring casual fans back, I wasn't talking about local talk. This was national talk. Which is the area we've been discussing. I admitted it could still be popular in Europe and Central America, but in the US it's a shadow of what it used to be and Mayweather isn't bringing casual fans back. I'm not saying it's dead, but it has gone from one of the most popular sports in the country to a fringe sport that can have the very occasional big event. It wasn't killed just by MMA, but it was replaced by a plethora of other sports. You want to say it was lack of TV, fine. I don't know why it's been a declining sport, but it is undeniable that it has been declining.

i admitted it wasn't as big a few posts back. And I disagree. Pac and mayweather are pretty big attractions even if mayweather is disliked. I don't see it being killed off by mma or dying. I see it as a cycle that it can easily pull out of. Mainly with it being shown on regular broadcast channels again and a few big names.

I wasn't a casual fan of boxing. I followed it. Mayweathers fights suck. Every great fighter has defining moments, Mayweather really doesnt. His career is a bunch of boring decisions it's great that he never lost but no one ever cares that the greats lost fights because they gave us such great moments. He never did and that's why his legacy is yawn inspiring despite him being one of the all time best fighters.

Pacquiao out 9-12 months. I guess there wont be a rematch. Though i still believe Floyd isnt really retiring and is just taking a year off. Negotiating tactic so that Showtime/HBo tempt him with even larger deals to fight in 2017.

they are asking if he'll go for marciano's record. I think he's done and will go with his promotion company. Really his clout is huge right now in the boxing world. He'd be smart to retire and push other "good" talent. Not some of that garbage he's been pushing.

I think if Floyd wanted to be aggressive and go into a slug match... Pacquiao would have been embarrassed.. the few aggressive moments Floyd had, made Pacquiao look like a punching bag.. But Floyd won't change his style, as he always says, "there's nothing cool about taking punishment".

Floyd Hit Pacquiao with the same short step right hand that Marquez knocked him out with and the same one that got him rocked vs. Cotto early in that fight. This time, Pacquiao walked right through it and set to throw a combination.

Floyd has nothing in his hands. If he slugs with him..he only embarrasses himself by not being able to hurt a guy with everything in his arsenal.

Floyd Mayweather's great trick and achievement is to convince people that the mere act of not engaging is enough to win fights for him.

Fact is that he engaged with Mosley, got hurt...but engaged with him..engaged with cotto....with Pacquiao? That was disgraceful. he literally did NOTHING, and then ran when Pacquiao would try to press.

He simply fought a amateurish Olympian style. Boring, but "enough" to win him a decision from all the people that are completely fooled and have bought into that "style".

I love how immediately they throw out the story about Pac's shoulder to make people think the next time will be a better fight.

I think the problem with boxing now is a mix between no finishers, and shady business. People don't trust the judges. People don't trust the promoters. People don't trust the fighters. When you're making 100mm to fight in a match, why would you both NOT agree to take it easy, make it close, and get paid for a rematch.

That's the biggest reason I refused to buy this or go somewhere. You just knew 12 rounds would go, pick and pop, nothing crazy, close on the cards, Mayweather is winner, they get paid, and a rematch gets scheduled for 12 months out, to paint a narrative, build the fight, and get paid again.

Whats better than sex with a women? Sex with two women. Whats better than $100,000,000 ? $200,000,000.

I stopped watching boxing when Roy Jones Jr. adopted that strategy. Its bad enough the sport is dirtier than CiF's thoughts at a family reunion, but when the match looks like Dancing with the Stars, I'm done.

Simple fact is that Manny lied to the commission so they wouldn't postpone the fight and Mayweather then backs out and he loses his pay day.

Pacquiao..TO WIN..needed to throw a ton of right jabs to move Mayweather into range or get him to move into his hooks. Simple point of strategy, and if you saw the fight...ANYTHING good that happened for Manny started with hos straight right hand.

Well...a torn right rotator cuff? The only weapon he had to use vs. Mayweather, he did not have. We were robbed...but mostly robbed by the Nevada Athletic commission that denied Manny his Toradol shot.

    What a Con this is.

There will definitely be a Mayweather/Pacquiao II. And more $ will be made for both of them.
