A few interesting tidbits. There will be no new characters added, but there will be changes. No details, but confirmation that the battle system will be updated.

You can more or less expect Final Fantasy XV's battle system in FF7r. That's almost a given.

What I'm curious about is what changes will be made to the story if any. Would the Honey Bee Inn fly today? Will Vincent and Yuffie still be optional?

Was Yuffie optional? I remember that Vincent was. I remember fighting Yuffie's dad, who was a sort of esper, right? Been a while.

Yes, Yuffie was optional. You had to find her as a random encounter in the forests near Junon. My guess is that Wutai will no longer be an optional area, and Yuffie will join permanently after the Wutai storyline is concluded.

Yuffie's dad wasn't an esper, he was just taking the form of a monster... or something. The game really wasn't clear on it. Video game logic, etc. I think he awarded the Leviathan summon materia.

As for Vincent, it'll probably be required to free him from the coffin in the Shinra Mansion to finish the area.

Leviathian was always one of my favorite summons. The animation in 8 was especially cool.

Since it's a rumor of an FF remake, I'm putting this here. If it gets confirmed, it'll get its own thread.

Final Fantasy XII remake may have just been confirmed.

I read that this morning too. A ground up remake like the 7 one would be phenomenal, but even a HD remaster would be very cool.

Considering that they've technically already remade FF12 with the International Zodiac Job System version, I'd imagine this is more along the lines of a remaster ala FFX.

OK, I'll trust you on that. Anything outside of the current Sony console in the US is outside of my wheelhouse. A remaster would be great, especially if its been upgraded from the version I played in 2006. Absolutely loved that game. Last PS2 game I ever played, and I never played it on the PS2, lol. Bought it just after I got my original PS3 and played it on there when that was still possible. I'm pretty sure that before Skyrim came around, it was the game I put the most hours into a single playthrough. Still have my premium guide in top condition too. Beautiful book.

IZJS changed everything about how the game played. When a character joined, you assigned them a permanent job that gave them a custom License Board, instead of everyone having the exact same board as in the original FF12.

So if S-E just graphically enhances the IZJS, it will be new enough for new players and those who played the original FF12.

-puts controller down and makes a sandwich
    -reads entirety of atlas shrugged
-comes back to finish watching knights of the round dealing massive damage

    ahhhhh good times

seriously tho, just acquiring that summon was a chore, and it did so much damage i guess it was squares way of punishing us for using it :p

That is interesting news, for obvious reasons.

However, my FF12 guide is still like new, in its awesome glory. It was the first collector's edition guide that I ever bought. I look forward to eventually being able to use it again.

If the HD remaster/remake is based on the International Zodiac Job System version, your existing guide will be useless.

Eh, not useless. Just less useful. Lots of good info thats still applicable about areas, characters, enemies, weapons and equipment, right? And its a thing of beauty with the art.

Nope. Magicks, Gambits, and items changed. There are new Gambits. Treasure chests changed locations. Some monster stats were changed, along with the item steal list. Weapon and armor stats were modified. Espers can be controlled. Etc, etc.

Your old guide is useless for IZJS.

I hate to link to Kotaku anything, but whatever, the other videos are even worse quality. No direct feed yet.

I told you guys this would be based on the FF15 battle system. I just wish they had cast Mr. T as Barret.

I don't mind FFXV gameplay, as I found that demo to be a lot of fun. But you only control one person in that game, so I am curious how the other party members will interact in VII (remake). I am also curious how summons will work.

Expect summons to work the same way they do in FF15. And footage of playing as Barret was in the trailer. Presumably you just hit a button and will switch control to the next party member.

I don't know how summons work in XV, so while I expect it to be the same, it doesn't do anything for me...

Also, I'm not looking to find out any more about XV gameplay until I play it, so I don't really want to be shown how summons work either if it is known. Most of my comments were rhetorical and me voicing the thoughts in my head, so I'm sorry about that.

This is the only FF game I played (didn't finish) and would love to play this. Any chance of a PC release - I don't have PS4?

They literally just re-released the original this week as a digital download for PC and PS4, if you'd like.

Maybe eventually, as Square-Enix seems to be releasing more and more games on PC. The FFX/-2 HD remake has a Steam Database entry now, so odds are it'll be on Steam soon.

But the FF7 remake is being done in episodes. So it's unknown if they'll wait until everything is done, or if they'll port shortly after releasing on PS4.

The Steam version was out a while ago. The PS4 version is a port of the Steam version.

I think that the title and tone of this article are a bit over the top (as is so much in our society lately), but some of the finer points do make some sense.

I guess that I was working off of the presumption that the game would be some sort of action RPG in the Dragon Age series sense. Is that totally off base? Would it possibly be a pure action game?

And this section made me feel.....ancient

I hadn't considered that the under 20 crowd held that much sway, but I suppose that with gaming, the do. People who weren't born when I started college getting preferential treatment over me. SIGH :confused2:

I have several problems with the "reasoning" in that article.

    1. The assertion that each episode will be full priced. Based on what evidence? Pricing has not been discussed. Square-Enix is almost certainly going to sell this as one bundled product when done. They aren't charging $60 x # of installments for the final product. My rough guess is that they'll charge $10 per episode and have 7 episodes for symbolic purposes, so we'll wind up paying $10 higher than standard MSRP for a full remake. I'm OK with that. The article is absolutely correct that the younger generation whines non-stop about game pricing, in part because they don't have jobs.

    2. Article conflates turn-based with menu-based. These two are not the same thing. The ATB system, or at least some modified form of it, is currently in the game. This is a turn-based battle system. The entire FF13 trilogy used an ATB system driven by menus, and sold almost 6 million copies around the world. And that series was friggin' terrible. What changed between 2014 and 2015 to turn-based combat suddenly unpalatable?

    3. "If you love FFVII, you'll hate the remake." Great, so go buy the mildly enhanced port they just released.

Lucky, the 12-25 age group is absolutely the biggest demographic for all forms of entertainment, not just gaming. They have the most free time, their income (allowance) is almost 100% disposable, and they are not particularly discerning. Mass entertainment is configured around appeasing them and getting their money.

I've said it all along, but if you play the FFXV demo, you'll get a good idea as to how FF7R will play.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm simply unable to play the demo, at least for now. Do you really think that they would split the game into 7 seperate parts? How would that work for traditional retail? I'd go buy seven different discs over half a year at Target or Best Buy? Surely they wouldn't try to make such a high profile console game download only.

I know that the world is a different place, but I certainly wasn't ever the primary demographic when I was 12-25! But again, the late 80s through early 2000s weren't the same as they are now. I was a kid who's opinion mattered for squat and relied on getting games, or anything else, as gifts on my birthday or the holidays.

Half a year? Haha, no, no… think more like 2 years. If they could crank this puppy out in 6 months they wouldn't need to go episodic in the first place.

Oh yes you were. Everything from Hansen to N*SYNC was targeted to 12-25 year olds.

The entire reason for doing this episodically is because the world is so huge and varied that it would take a damn long time to build everything in HD. So by doing it episodically, they can focus all the art teams on one specific segment of the game with similar art and put out product faster.

I think it'll break down like this:

    1. Midgar
    2. Kalm through Junon.
    3. Costa del Sol through Nibelheim.
    4. Rocket Town through the Ancient City.
    5. Icicle Inn through the Northern Crater.
    6. Junon again through Midgar attack.
    7. Final dungeon, ending, bonus content.

This is just based on the original FF7's flow, though. They've already said they'll add stuff that wasn't in the original FF7, so the overall flow and direction of the plot may change. We're probably going to get some Crisis Core integration, including its presentation of past events and inclusion of its areas like Banora Village, and we'll probably see some Dirge of Cerberus references.

After playing the original game in 97, I actually haven't had any exposure to the "expanded universe" of FF7 aside from watching Advent Children, which was really strange. Curious to see what else they add in, and frankly, the details of the original are blurry at this point.

The additional material is likely there just to reconcile the contradictions between FF7, Crisis Core, and Before Crisis. Advent Children stands by itself, so other than providing a basis for the FF7 character models and world design, it shouldn't be too important to FF7R.
