Who is to blame if you cant score from 5 yards away with 8 downs?

Was it against the Jags where he had a few as well? Anyway, I was off thinking batted balls instead of deflections.

And speaking of the devil, the Jags game really cemented my feelings on him. I truly tried to give him every benefit of the doubt, but he just doesn't will his way to wins. There is very little creativity on his part, stepping out of the confines of what's written in a playbook. The guy makes fantastic throws with hands in his face (like the throw to ?Stoneberger), but we rarely see him make a play when things break down and the players are not where they are supposed to be per the playbook.

He has all the makings of a gunslinger with the exception of what's between his ears. Maybe it's a little bit of thinking too much without the ability to process things quickly enough. Sometimes, I truly wonder what he is thinking, especially on blitzes. Does the prospect of thinking "I'm rolling left right if things break down because the one-on-one is there" not cross his mind?? Create plays from breakdowns, whether it be on a blitz, or not. I doubt it's a trust issue with his receivers. I believe it's a trust issue within himself.

He doesn't do it with any frequency for me to even acknowledge he has even done it. It's damned frustrating. No real feeling of that field general authority. Tough as nails, but he feels like a damned 'yes man' at this point. And with that, as another poster opined, his deficiencies are exacerbated by the paltry O-line play and playcalling. It's a firestorm all around.

 

He's not an elite quarterback but he can win games if he has anytime. He had some nice throws in the second half when the OL gave him some protection. You can't expect him to be great with this swiss cheese of a line.

 

No, he isn't as bad as many think....but he also is a part of the reason we suck.

Can we all just take a step back and breath? Remember that we were going up against the most expensive group of CBs in the league? Revis is a HOF, cromarties top notch and even skrine was highly coveted. Combine that with bowles the blitzking, and yeah, our boy didn't look great.

I'll say this, no avg qb makes that td throw to stoneburner. In a half second tannehill turns to see leonard williams about to murder him. RT throws a beautiful fade, off his back foot, and it lands on a dime in the corner.

But you kno what? That play call sucked. RT had no business making that play work, but he did it anyway.

 

For the sake of argument, let's say that you guys are 100% right....it all comes down to timing. Since Tannehill doesn't have the time to properly plant his feet and release the ball at the optimal point as the receiver is breaking free, the pass is almost always uncatchable. If I understand your point correctly, that's what you are both saying.

If that's true, then why does Tannehill even throw the ball in the first place when, according to you guys, it can't be completed?

That sounds strikingly similar to what others say when they mention, "Tannehill just can't throw deep and he makes poor decisions." Because if you're right and the pass cannot be completed due to timing, then it's foolish to keep throwing it in the first place.

Tannehills not a HOF qb. I don't think a single person would argue that he ever will be.

You're right. He's just a guy on a team with a bunch of other guys. He can dazzle you with a few lasers, but really that's it at the end of the day.

 

I originally stated it was tannehill AND the play calling, but somehow the play calling part was ignored. I do believe we have had 20 plays the last two games where it was goal to goal. We threw all 20 times and got zero TD's out of it. Breaking it down more, there were 4 receivers each route, so that is 80 routes that were run into the endzone. I guess it is easier to say the WR's failed 80 times then it is to say Tannehill might have been the problem on the throws or choice of whom to throw to.

 

If we replaced Tannehill with Aaron Rodgers, would our team, as it is today, be any better? Probably not. I think the team would probably connect on a few more passes per game and perhaps we win a couple more per season but there is so much that is broken that one player is not the difference. If the play calling was better, the coaching, better, then I think we improve greatly as long as the players buy into the play calling and coaching. With the players we have now we are a play-off team. If we fix the o-line and d-line and Tannehill can't live up to expectations then we deal with that but he has to have a good team around him. Even a half way decent team but now we have a bad team.

 

I think Tannehill is an exceptional athlete who happens to play the QB position. The NFL has seen excellent athletes play QB before (Vick, Cunningham, Newton, Flutie, McNair, Tarkenton) and many of them have done well if surrounded by nice talent and good coaches who use their athleticism. My opinion is if they are allowed to use all their athleticism, they can be as good as a good QB (Romo, Ryan, Bledsoe, Jim Kelly), but everything needs to be in place.

The thing that hurts Tannehill, is he doesn't have the supporting cast (in the players or coaches) to get him to be a consistently good QB. If our next coach gets the right scheme and our GM selects the right people, he may work out. I personally would like to see him rip into a lineman's arse if he continues to get hit. Too many times yesterday, he just walked to the sideline and never showed any emotion after a failed 3rd down try.

 

..we would be no worse than 2-2. We win the Jaguars game and have a fair shot at the Jets game. The difference between Aaron Rodgers, the best QB in the league and Ryan Tannehill the 15th ish QB in the league is HUGE! We're avg what 14pts a game? It'd be funny to see the excuses for Thill if we could somehow put Rodgers on this team and watch the offense score 20+. I seriously wonder how long all the excuses will last for Thill? We're going on 4 years and the blame just shifts from oline to rb to wr to te to head coach to offensive coordinator....

The blame hasn't shifted. The oline, receivers, and coaching are still varying degrees of below average to terrible, and are bigger problems than Tannehill. They are costing us games. When Tannehill has at least average support, if he still doesn't do it for you, then complain about him.

 

I don't believe that. The system Brady plays in makes ordinary people look great. For example, look at Cassel. BB, along with his cheating, is the best coach in the league.

Football Outsiders did a compilation of stats that I really think some of you may like.


Basically, they compiled all bad throws by QB's and broke them up into under and over throws.

Per their site:

Last season RT overthrew his WR's 11.9% of the time. He under-threw them 2.7% of the time. His overall "bad pass" % was 14.6. That is 4th best in the league.

Brady, for example, overthrew his WR's 11.0% and under-threw 7.4%. Overall % was 18.4. That's 21st in the league.

(RT had 3 more fumbles than Brady)

 

Also, you're not understanding the stats. The "Air Yards %" is taken from the total number of yards of the catch.

If a QB throws the ball three yards in the air, but his WR runs 30, then his Air Yards % would be 10%.

 

He's not the biggest reason we're losing but he's part of it. Seeing how he's a QB, his play more than anybody elses determines the outcome of the game. There's a reason we've been a mediocre team in Tannehill's career and its not ALL because of everybody else. Thill is a big part of the mediocrity.

 

Ya and how long would the RT detractors continue if he went to another team and played much better...like ALL ex-Dolphins seem to do.

I think it was Dan Campbell's fault we couldnt score.

 

I understand the stat perfectly. I just don't see having a high PERCENTAGE of air yards as being a positive stat for the QB.

 

It shows how many yards he actually is throwing the ball. I think it's a better indicator of his passing yards than counting what the WR does with the catch.

 

One of my hopes is Campbell goes away from the ZBS as it really does not fit the offensive line's skillset

 

That would be hard to do midseason though.

 

Anyone know when Jay Ajayi comes back? Still healling the cracked rib.
We could really use his car crash/brutal running style to kick up this running game. All fairness it's tough to get a back going with 7 carries.

Another thing I would love to see for the rest of the season is DeVante Parker being developed. Put him on the field now. He can help in the RZ.
Jennings isn't the answer to start.......Off the bench sure. It would be a great time to get Parker involved on a consistent basis.

Yeah, sounds like that would be tough to transition. Even though I don't know much about scheming, it does seem like these guys are not made for it. Maybe go into a hybrid of sorts, but I don't know much about what it would take. I thought they were not bad (sometimes really well) last year with Satele playing center.

 

That's a lot to ask. We'll see. For some reason, I thought he'd be available for week six. Blew my hopes right out of the water.

But I agree, Miami needs him (or someone like him) like yesterday.

Leave Pouncey at center and put Mitchell at FB - something they were supposedly working on during the PS.

Miller, Gray, and Ajayi should be a nice stable of backs if we can open lanes for them.
