If Philbin wasn't the problem, then what is the problem?

Last night it was mental errors...Landry's penalty/drops, Beckham getting wide open for an easy TD, line penalties and Grimes getting smoked. It was a little of everything, plus we're reaching the depths of our roster.

 

Past two weeks clearly shows everyone is the problem. Lazer or no Lazer, we still have a 85/15 pass/run ratio except now with audibles lol makes no freaking difference if its lazer, taylor, or tannehill calling the shots, they escape the run despite Miller running like Ricky Williams in the first half.

 

Philbin wasn't THE problem. He was a problem. He lost the team and didn't get them back. That is why he was fired and rightfully so.
The problems with our team are as follows, IMO:

- We don't have a good coaching staff, period. There may be a couple of guys who are OK.
- We have problems on the oline.
- We need corners who can play at least an average level consistently.
- We need the safety opposite Jones to be at least average.
And these two things across the board:
- We need at least average depth across the whole team
- We need some discipline across the whole team

 

Philbin was huge part of the problem. And one of his biggest problems was purging talent without a solid plan to replace it simply because he didnt like them. It makes me sick to my stomach every time I think of Davis and Smith being kicked to the curb. Sure Davis was immature but that guy can play and what do we have there now? Not much and too little.

I would add, we are a soft team mentally.

Last night Tannehill came out guns ablaze, and his WR's promptly dropped 4+ passes that only required winning physical matchups.
They failed on all ends.

Our D is soft. Darr backs up the Giants inside the 5 2-3 times, and on at least 2 occasions the Giants gash us with runs. On one occasion, they rush for a first down then throw a bomb to Beckham.

This team is an absolute nightmare. Terrible from top to bottom.
You never see all the pieces clicking together. They are not a unified bunch.

 

Honestly, to me that's a coaching problem.

 

There were two long passes that should have been caught early on that were possible TD passes had the receiver simply made the catch.

The one guy I want gone more than just about any other on this team is Damian Williams. I see no reason to keep him.

 

Which is why Campbell is in over his head and must be fired.

No more of this nice guy **** in Davie.

He had his chance and has failed.

You could argue that the deck was stacked against him and I'd agree.

However, the one thing he could control was our game plan last night and abandoning the run when Miller was tearing it up proves he isn't much better than Queasy or Lazor.

Plus, he is on the verge of losing the locker room. How many terrible personal fouls were committed last night that were blatant? It's almost like they wanted to lose.

 

The thread title is a faulty premise. Joe Philbin WAS a problem. He just wasn't the ONLY problem. The fact that the problems have continued were foreseeable. Why should we as fans expect Philbin's underlings to perform any better than Philbin? Campbell has actually done a somewhat admirable job considering the terrible situation he inherited.

If you want a big reason why the problems persist and may continue for a long time has been historically terrible drafting. When you look at the contributions other teams are getting from their 1st and 2nd round picks vs. the contributions Miami is getting, we should not be surprised. Compound that with the failures in free agency over the past several years and the only thing that is surprising is that things aren't worse.

I don't know, I find the personal fouls a little encouraging in a way. At least it shows me that we do have a few guys with some fire in them on this team.

 

The personal fouls are OK if you are playing smash mouth football and are shoving the football up their ***.

Instead, we go soft, stop running the ball and our WR's act like ballerinas on 50/50 balls.

If your identity is to be a tough football team and you want to send messages back it up with action on the field.

 

phlbin has 4years to hand pick soft finesse players that he wanted. 4 years to brainwash them into poor habits. 4 years to tarnish the coaches under him and teach them poor methods. i think we need a total miami dolhpins cleanse, from tannenbaum to the towel boys and everyone inbetween.

 

Which is why those of us that question Tannehill and his fire have valid points. The kid has been brainwashed by an inept idiot.

Which also gives credence to the other side that thinks Tannehill has been grossly under coached.

The truth is in the middle. Last night was a good start, let's see if it was just the anger of his job being threatened or a fresh start.

 

They killed our drives and prolonged theGiants' drives. That's never good.

 

Ireland couldn't build a team. Philbin and his staff can't coach a team. Hickey and Tannenbaum aren't much better. Our owner makes terrible decisions. The coaches and players with a few exceptions are crap. End of story.

We have more needs than an expansion team. That is THE problem.

 

Personnel. Which Philbin is partially responsible for. Vontae,smith,dansby and incognito. How much better is this team with those four players

 

It is very hard to fix something midseason. Philbin was the problem this year.

 

Agreed the issue is personnel based. Ultimately, the organization is guilty of building a stars and scrubs team. There's very little quality depth to be had at any of the position groups on offense or defense. And when the regular season in November and December basically devolves into a battle of attrition, you've got a major issue on your hands. Tannenbaum has further perpetuated this trainwreck with his offseason spending spree.

The only way to win in this league is to build through the draft, whereby eliminating the need to be on the hook for the decline years of expensive aging vets.

I have no confidence in Tannenbaum to turn this around. People want to point at those Jets drafts in the early/mid 2000's - those were a product of Mangini, not Tannenbaum.

The guys who paint the field? It looked pretty good last night, except those endzones, and typically the field always looks pretty nice.

 

honestly, I loved those uniforms!!! Time to go back to those.

 

I love the old school look but this team doesn't deserve to wear those uniforms.

 

Coaching has most certainly been the biggest problem with this team. Philbin put a pretty poor coaching staff together and just because they got rid of him and were forced to replace him and his coordinators with coaches who were under these men, and were not qualified to hold those jobs, we shouldn't have expected things to get fixed. There are certainly issues with the roster, but IMO the most pressing issue is coaching. In fact, I think an argument can be made that this year's team was the worst coached team I can remember (and that's saying a lot), when you look at the sheer amount of mind-blowing mistakes and issues directly related to coaching:

-Not using your best offensive player even half as much as he should be
-Not asking your best defensive player and prized FA signing to do what has made him a great player, for most of the season
-Leaving Dallas Thomas out there continually despite penalties and poor play
-Playing Damien Williams at all when he's not really a player that should be on the roster
-Not allowing your QB to audible
-Making a good, but not great WR the focal point of your offense
-Poor gameplanning in almost every game
-Lack of adjustments in almost every game
-Gutless calls like punting inside the 50 at the end of a meaningless game 3 times
-Poor game/clock management
-Throwing the ball at least 80% of the time on the GL under Lazor

And probably more that I can't think of off the top of my head.

I mean, most of those are things anyone that even knows a little bit about football can do, yet this staff can't figure it out. It's really pathetic.

 

The players on D don't match the scheme. They don't match any scheme actually. Coyle got a lot of heat but there's not much he or anyone else could do with this bunch. They needed Wake healthy and playing at a Pro Bowl level to have a realistic chance.

The offense is in better shape talent wise but lacks an identity. Theyre forced out of what they do well far too easily and they rarely have any answers when defenses crank up the pressure.

 

You are 100 % correct and Gruden was eluding to this all night. At one point he pointed out that Miami's receivers run horrible routes when the QB is scrambling. These are the small coaching details that make and break games that no Dolphin player has been able to develop over the past 4 years. What other things such as the above example have the players not been coached up to? The focus over the past 2 weeks has been to allow THill the ability to audible and to get him to move more in the pocket. It was obviously practiced over that time and look what happened, play improved. This staff is either unable to point out to players how to improve their play in a given situation or they are completly unaware of the proper technique. What does this say about their abilities in more complicated aspects of football, such as game planning or developing an effective defensive or offensive scheme?
