The first episode is already done.

And we're getting more stuff, as planned.

Because games cost a lot more to make now, and this way they can recoup some more money I'd imagine. It'd also allow them to release parts of the game earlier as opposed to waiting X years until it is 100% complete.

I'm all for it if it fledged it out. Never got to play the prequel on PSP or whatever. Also would love to get some backstory on some characters. Vincent, Cid, etc.

Also I hope they keep Tifa's big boobs....

In her day, Tifa was the number one video game girl. Still on the all time list

$$$. If they released it as one game then they could only charge $60 for it, because anymore and people would flip out. If they break up the release like Blizzard did with Starcraft 2, and charge $40 for each part, consumers are going to $120 when it's all said and done. Realistically they're gonna charge $60 for each installment, and people will pay it because it's FF7

Zero evidence to support this idea that each episode will cost $60. Square-Enix has done two episodic games, neither charged $60 per episode.

They're breaking it up into episodes because the effort required to render FF7's world in HD is a huge undertaking and the art teams can't keep up. FF7's world and variance of design is much bigger than, say, GTA5's, yet GTA5 still took years to complete.

Also, for you Tifa-curious, the FF7R character models are designed using the Advent Children versions as a starting point.

There's no way in hell each episode is gonna be $60. The total package will probably be full price and you can access each episode when it becomes available. That sounds like the most reasonable idea IMO.

I agree on the concept but not the price. I'd say probably something like $79 all in with bonus content, etc. Add some typical exclusive pre-order companion(s) or skins(s) and there you go. Imagine Tifa is a pre-order exclusive companion - no chance, because this isn't EA, but still lol.

They've already cast English voice actors and have recorded lines. They have the intro sequence finished enough that they're willing to show it in a trailer. I'd be shocked if episode 1 wasn't out in the next few months.

They need to space things out carefully, though. They can't steal FFXV's oxygen: they have 10 years of work invested in that game. They NEED FFXV to be a massive hit much more than FF7R. FFXV is absolutely a 2016 game, possibly as early as the summer in Japan.

My guess is that we're playing FF7R in 1H 2016 and FFXV in 2H 2016.

That's traditionally been their deal with FF games, right? Release it in Japan 3-6 months before the US.

Sometimes even longer, yes. Localization takes a while, so it gets released when it's ready in each region. This is also why Europe gets games even later than we do; multiple languages.

I'd wager it'll be more than that. Right now "season passes" and "ultimate editions) hover around the $120 range. 4 episodes at $30/each seems reasonable for getting a true remake that doesn't cut content.

Maybe that's just the 30/yo gainfully employed version of me talking.

For me, the question with the multiple episodes becomes how they all fit together. This isn't assasins creed, where you can break up Enzio's story into three parts over three years and have it all playable and fun. With FF, you level up your characters, you gain skills, unlock other aspects, ect. Would you be able to import all of that data into the next game? And if you did, would it then be a different experience for different people? Would there be *SHUDDER* level caps for the individual games?

IMO, this is a bad analogy, considering that Assassin's Creed games break down into chapters ("memory sequences"). AC2 has something like 14 memory sequences, plus the modern day segments.

It's not a "new" game, it's a continuation of the existing game. You just load your save file and continue. Play the Lethe River sequence in FF6 to see how the chapter setup would likely work.

Why would there be? The natural ascending EXP requirements to gain levels would form a natural barrier to imbalanced leveling anyway. While, yes, someone would sit there and grind out 200 EXP battles to get a 575,000 level up, most people won't. Most people won't even grind out their limit breaks.

Lol, grinding out levels has been a way of life for me since the 80s. I never move on in a game until I feel I'm more than ready.

Heck, at this point I don't remember what areas were which in the game. It'll all feel half new to me. I remember the characters and a lot of the story, but its been so long and I've played so many other games that the small details are all really blurry.

So, for those of you worried or intrigued by FF7R's episodic nature, you might glean some info from the new Hitman game. Hitman has gone episodic.

So, we're getting the same content, but quicker, with physical retail release and regular pricing for all versions.

We can probably expect something like this with FF7R.

Well, help me understand. Does that mean that the game will likely come out as a download first, and then a real disc later on? And that the disc will then have all of the content?

Thats a huge bummer. So the release date (whenever it is) might not mean anything at all to those of us who play physical copies then.

Well, time to start hoping that Square-Enix will publish each episode on physical media, then. Or time to figure something out with the Internet, because digital distribution is the primary method of playing games on PC and slowly becoming more commonplace on console. As soon as game purchases are tied to accounts and not consoles, it's going to take over.

It's why I had to quit gaming on the pc years back. Crossing my fingers it's not commonplace on consoles until the next generation. Even if I could do downloads, I like having a real copy.

I'll concede that owning a physical copy is better with consoles, because you phase out a console every few years. Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo haven't quite mastered this "make games you bought digitally last generation available to you this generation" thing. Steam doesn't have to worry about that.

I also have a lot more trust that the disc that I keep secured in its case, locked in my cabinet, will continue to work whenever I want it than I do a digital copy becoming corrupted or lost on my hard drive, or unavailable on someone's server. You never know when they'll choose to just get rid of your data, or make your digital copy useless. If I want to open up a PS3 game that I bought in 2006 and play it, I can right now.

This is a console-centric concern, though. Your Steam games don't disappear unless the publisher decides to stop selling them, and that's happened maybe 2 or 3 times in a library of 5 digits. The only publisher who's actually pulled out of Steam is EA, and even then, that just means they aren't selling new games on Steam. Existing games stayed in your library.

You can also make local backups, too.

I don't wish PC gamers any ill will, but for me the Sony system is video games. What happens on PCs is like something that goes on in a foreign country. I don't really care all that much what you guys do, but I just hope it doesn't negatively effect me.

If anything, it's the opposite. ****ty console ports to PC are a blight on the PC gaming scene.

The game will be "episodic", but will be full length games spread out over several years. Relieves some of the worries that I had about even being able to purchase it, but it does open some questions as to how progression and leveling will move from one title to the next. I guess we'll find out.

I don't see the question. You just import your save game from the previous edition. If you're starting new (and why would you?) then the characters are probably pre-leveled and given balanced equipment and materia, like an FF7 starter pack.

Well, my question would be in relation to leveling. Would there then be a hard cap for each of the early games that you cannot progress beyond? And then would you start at that exact point at the start of the next game? I know that you offered some suggestions for some of that, but I'm still going to be pondering it all until we get some clear answers.

I cannot remember ever playing a game where my characters' levels and equipment transferred from one game to another. Story features in Bioware games yes, but never character data. For me, it would be a first, I think.

There's no reason for a hard cap. If you want to spend forever power-leveling to 99, have fun.

You didn't play many Konami games on the PS1, did you? I was importing my Suikoden 1 save data to Suikoden 2 on the PS1 in 1998.
