It’s not your imagination; Miami Dolphins’ pass defense is historically bad

Here’s one 50th season tidbit that will go overlooked by the Dolphins’ marketing department:

This year’s pass defense is statistically the worst in franchise history. And it’s not even close.

Opposing quarterbacks this year have shredded the Dolphins for 3,908 yards and 31 touchdowns with an eye-popping 65.6 completion percentage. Those 31 touchdowns are tied with the 1967 Dolphins for most allowed in franchise history. And like the ’67 squad, the mark was set in just 14 games.

But bad news for this year’s Dolphins: They have two more games to obliterate it.

I blame tannehill. He's the worst cornerback/defensive end we've ever had.

Tannehill only has to take the blame for his own shortcomings this year, not those of the defense.

Yeah, but at least our rush defense......oh wait, no. Its also one of the worst in franchise history.

    Thanks, Tannehill!

I'd like to see more stats backing up "worst in franchise history".

We are pretty bad this year but I remember some other incredibly bad years that could be worse.

Well, the defense ranks 30th in yards allowed. The worst we've ever finished previously was 26th several times.

26th in points allowed. 2007 (30th) is the only season with a lower rank.

I don't have quick stats going all the way back in franchise history, but I can tell you that since 1990, this is the 4th worst season for rushing yards allowed, and EASILY the worst in passing yards allowed. (15 yards a game more than the next worst season)

Disagree. Miami could have an elite defense right now had they not let some talented players go.

Also since 1990, compared to other Miami teams:

Allowing almost 40 yards per game (total defense) more than the next worst season.

Recovered the fewest fumbles of any season on defense.

Allowing the most first downs on defense per game.

Allowing the third worst 3rd down percentage on defense.

Second worst TD percentage. Only 2007 was worse.

Tied with 2007 for most TDs allowed per game.

Third most 10 play drives allowed.

Fourth fewest 3 and outs forced.

Third most scoring drives allowed. (2007 & 2009)

    Worst time of possession.

Worst opponent completion percentage, by far.

Worst opponent passing yards per attempt, but almost 1.5 yards per.

    Worst passing first downs allowed.

    Worst passing TDs allowed.

Worst yards per pass allowed on 1st down.

Worst QB rating allowed. By 8 points!

Second most 20+ yard passing plays allowed.

Worst opponents percentage of targets caught.

Fifth worst opponents rushing yards per attempt.

Most 10+ yard rushing plays allowed.

Second worst total yards per play allowed.

  16. im not one to much stock into stats. Circumstances skew the numbers but since certain people feel the need to troll I would point out Miami is also ranked 30th in TOP. RTs offenses 3 n outs certainly contribute to the defenses dismal numbers. So yeah he shares some of the blame on defense too. Its a team sport, just like he does not shoulder all the blame on offense he also does not get off clean for the lack of performance on the otherside.

ToP sucks because we're dead last in the league in rushing attempts. No other reason. That's the fault of the OCs.

But of course Tannehill was going to be blamed for the defensive problems.....as i accurately predicted.

So i guess running the ball doesn't eat the clock.
I guess were not dead last in the league in rushing attempts.
I guess OCs don't call the plays.
I guess you didn't but some of the blame of our crappy defense on Tannehill.

    Happy Holidays

  20. why are you trolling me?
and why are you trying to bait people into an argument about RT in a thread discussing Defense?

yes i said Some of the defenses struggles could be attributed to RTs poor performances on offense. I dont disagree that part of the blame goes to the coaches too.

    I'm neither baiting nor trolling.

You claimed ToP was on Tannehill. I explained we are bad at ToP because we don't run the ball. I also predicted people would try to blame some of this on Tannehill.

You didn't like that and gave the "whatever man" response as if the things I said weren't true.

  22. actually I was just avoiding a pointless discussion with you because you have your panties in a bunch when someone holds RT culpable for his role in something negative about the team.

Miami also is 30th in total 1st downs. If you do not think miamis inability to move the ball on offense and that the leader of the offense bears any responsibility, I dont know what to tell you other than we disagree.

If you want to continue to argue about it, you will either being doing with somebody else or by yourself because I am not spending my Christmas go round and round with you just because your obsessed with being right.

I really do not care if you think RT would be a HOF QB with the right surrounding cast. I dont think he is the worst QB I have ever seen but you clearly have a higher opinion of him than I do.

No I was just doing 2 things, making a joke and getting in before someone started blaming Tannehill. Spoiler Alert......Someone actually blamed Tannehill.

I love that I made a joke (which was also a prediction) the prediction comes true and the Tannehaters get their panties in a bunch, but I'm the one uptight and can't handle an opposing position.

It's things like this that make me want to just leave and come back to the board once Tannehill is either gone or becomes the QB we all hoped he would be.

Delusional fanboys that put ZERO on Ryan. It's frankly pathetic and sad.

So we have the fewest rushing attempts in the league, but bad ToP is because of the QB who is also to blame for the defense?

    Thanks for teaching me football.

I never said it was only his fault. I agree part of the reason is we need to run more. There's a lot more to it then that. There's more to it then Tannehill too. But to say he doesn't shoulder any of the blame is just disheartening to have to read over and over. Puzzling. Ridiculous. Any of those words.

You're acting as if ToP is at best 50/50 between Tannehill and the running game or 70% on Tannehill. Its more like 80% on the lack of running the ball.

If we ran the ball an average amount of times instead of the worst in the league, our ToP would be fine. If Tannehill, magically "did more" our ToP wouldn't be a whole lot better because our chuckleheaded OC's would still not run the damn ball.

Blame Tannehill for things inside his control and you won't get arguments. But when you guys literally put 95% of the blame on him for the offense and now even some of the defense's problems, then the side with issues is not mine.

The thread that I started has to do with the poor play of the defense, it wasn't intended as a pretense for yet another discussion about Tannehill. You can start your own thread for that.
