Dolphins consider restructuring Ndamukong Suh's deal??

Even if it wasn't built into his contract....how does restructuring a deal that pays the man the same amount and doesn't change conditions constitute a question about "buyer's remorse"?

 

I don't think it would be smart to restructure his contract, because that just makes him less tradable, after next season he becomes tradable, but if you restructure that becomes really difficult due to the amount of "bonus" money his salary would have to turn into, or increasing his salary into the 20 mil and over range for multiple years, instead of just 1.

It was a bad deal, this would just make it worse imo.

 

I'm going to guess that the point is that they don't intend to trade him.

 

I didn't read the rest of the posts here, but believe me, Suh will get every penny of this year's contract. the only question is whether he'll get it as a bonus or as his structured salary... It's not buyer's remorse, it's built into the contract so that the team can gain some cap room... He benefits from getting the $23 or so million up front as cash and the team gets the needed cap space...It's simply moving the money around... He gets paid and stays on the team no matter how he is paid... There is no "take a little less of the pie" here...

 

I only do it if they add more guaranteed money.

 

it was a bad deal only if you think he's not worth having on your team...He's still the most dominating DL player in the league right now... Obviously, you don't like Suh, and that's fine, but it's not really a bad deal unless the team continues to NOT put him in a position to continue to be dominate...

 

While it's valid that the restructure does nothing to prove buyer's remorse, you're kidding yourselves if you think the Dolphins do not have buyer's remorse with Suh. They surely realize by now what some of us realized before the paperwork was signed - throwing money at a DT is not a winning move in the NFL. Even if Suh played as dominantly as he did with the Lions (which he did at times), it was still a poor signing and created many of the weaknesses that doomed this team in 2015. And the trouble is just starting with this contract.

 

Imo, there has never been a DT worth that money, and I also don't think he is or ever was the best DLineman in the league, it has nothing to do with liking him, I have always liked him as a player.

Where has all the talk gone that was prevalent at his signing? "it doesn't really matter who we have a LB or at the other corner spot, because Suh make everyone around him better, and you can't throw the ball when you're on your back..."

Many people saying he was better than any 2 players we could have signed at that spot, and where has that gotten us? We were as bad on defense as we have been since the early 90s, Suh made no one better, in fact, it seems like some players got worse, so where is this great boon we were supposed to get from Suh?

His fellow players and coaches and writers from around the league not casting their votes for him says a lot, because that's the only way a super popular player doesn't get into the probowl, his play here this year was above avg, but that's about it, he's not the great player everyone assumed, but after I watched a ton of his Detroit tape after we signed him, I found that out myself, and I said it before the season started, and what I said held out to be true.

So it has nothing to do with me not liking Suh, I like him as a player, but what I don't do is overvalue him as a player, and paying Suh franchise QB money is quite possibly the stupidest football move this team has ever made, he's no where near worth it.

 

Watt is far more dominating then Suh, and every other player in the league.

 

It is the opposite. If the Dolphins had buyers remorse they wouldn't restructure his contract.

If Suh played as dominantly as he did with the Lions, specifically helping our run defense get to #1 in the league and top 5 overall in points scored, that contract is totally worth it.

Problem is what actually happened is totally the opposite even though he played well (though not at a top 3 level league-wide in 2015). It's still a mystery to me how the discrepancy in DL performance was so great.

 

If we restructure his deal to make it more palatable with the salary cap then why on earth would we trade him? He's one of the top defensive players in the league.

 

Don't get the Buyer's remorse stuff at all... As per PFF:

 

Suh had a great defense around him in Detroit. In Miami, his contract created other weaknesses on defense, namely at LB. Doesn't matter how dominating he is if everyone around him stinks. He's a great player, but not worth what the Dolphin paid him. There's a reason the teams that throw money around like the Dolphins and win free agency rarely win for real. And there is a reason the teams that build through the draft and avoid big splashy names in free agency find themselves in the playoffs year in and year out.

 

Really think that they should. In order to pay for the draft picks coming up. They need all the help on defense.

 

Suh was dominant this year AFTER Wake went down which was extremely impressive. It shows just how elite he really is, PFF knows it because they actually study the tape like professionals, instead of just pretending to know what they are talking about to feel good about themselves like many on this site. It's easy to say Suh is over paid and no DT is worth that much, everyone knows that is true. The complicated part that many just don't understand is NFL free agency is a fickle beast, you have to get players TO WANT to sign with your team, and even then they have to be a scheme/cap fit. Even if they are a fit teams can resign their own at the last minute like how Chip Kelly was trying to steal McCourty last year but NE wouldn't let him, and then Frank Gore changed his mind so they went with Demarco. So obviously like I'm sure Chip (dumba**) Kelly thought last year it would be nice to just pick and chose players in FA that fit your teams needs and are a good cap/locker room fit, but then reality happens and you realize these aren't f****** pokecards and you end up with Demarco Murray...at $40,000,000 just to hit your teams cap floor.

Suh is a great player and someone this franchise has been starving to build around, even if some of our teams fans can't understand this that doesn't mean it was a bad decision and we have remorse. Our football guys like Tannenbaum aren't exactly seen as world beaters by anyone and for good reason, but they're a hell of a lot football smarter than our average fan who thinks they know what they are talking about and post on the internet about how stupid this team is lol.

 

It only makes this year more palatable, it makes every other year worse, and next year, if the team decides to move on they can trade him, but not if they restructure, and yes he's a very good DT, but no DT is worth that money, and it inhibits the team from keeping and or acquiring other talent.

We're a rebuilding team, we need to keep what talent we can and Suh is 29 years old already, there really is no reason to keep him around after next year.

 

I looked up the Lions' rush defense on Pro Football Reference from 2010-2014 (his years in Detroit) -- rank in total yardage allowed and yards per attempt:

2010: 24/24

2011: 23/30

2012: 16/24

2013: 6/20

2014: 1/1

So, 2014 is really an outlier.

Not sure what that little exercise proves. Probably nothing. But it seems to show that Suh alone is not enough to give you a great run defense.

Edit -- In 2015, the Lions fell back to 20/20. So maybe giving him up means you won't have a great run defense, either.

Incidentally, the Dolphins were 28/13 last year, and 24/21 the year before that. In 2011, the year Sparano got fired, we were 3/3! Go figure.

 

I don't think the front office looks at it the same way. They didn't give him all that money guaranteed to just have him for 2 years, then its not worth it to have even signed him. We made a huge investment so it only makes sense to get a return. I seriously doubt the front office thinks we are rebuilding. Now if things fall apart this next season then we will be getting rid of Ryan and probably Suh and really any other vets that make a lot of money. But if we make the playoffs next year we aren't getting rid of Suh.

 

Well, things fell apart this season, if they aren't in rebuild mode, we as a fan base are probably in for some more anguish.

However, the bold is my point, IF they want to POSSIBLY get rid of Suh next year then they can't restructure his contract this year, it's much better to be able to be flexible imo, and as far as the "investment", how many have we signed and it not worked out? Too many to want to count, lol, the point is to build a SB contending team, and if they have a better chance doing that by trading Suh next year, then that's what they should do.

The way Suh was used early this season is an example of forcing a scheme on a player, and not adapting to their strengths.

 

What are you going on about? I was addressing two things:

1. Your claim that he said that Suh was a scheme fit, as you tried to bring the tailoring the offense argument here

And

2. That early in the season Suh was asked to react to the defense, per our scheme, instead of allowing him to attack the oline and disrupt.

 

I disagree that the Suh signing created weaknesses. He's an elite player in the prime of his career and he had a very good year. They just ****ed up building the team.

• They should have gotten Clay under contract sooner.
• They should have signed Odrick sooner.
• If they didn't resign Odrick, they should have brought Starks back.
• They could have drafted Marcus Peters in the first round.
• They could have drafted Denzel Perryman in the second round.

 

Yeah, IMO the coaches are real suspect in the huge fall-off in DL productivity with Suh in Detroit vs. here. So I'm not going to agree with those that say Suh was a bad signing until I see us having a mediocre DL with a different coach. The leash is short though. If we don't do well in run defense/pass rush in 2016, I'm on board with those saying this was a bad signing.
