OC Clyde Christensen: I will be Ryan Tannehill’s ally

That's really coach speak for "I want a different QB," isn't it?

 

He wants "an aggressive, no-huddle" approach to offense. We've heard this before. I guess we'll see for certain whose fault it really was: Philbin or Tannehill for failure to implement it.

 

Did Philbin really state this? I remember Lazor saying that he wanted an up-tempo offense (but wasn't specifically talking about no-huddle).

 

They didn't think Tannehill was good enough, maybe they were right.

Reading the posts in that thread is a mix of funny and depressing...

 

I like what the new coaches are saying, and how they're saying it. Christensen really comes across as a lot more player friendly than Lazor was, which I think it s big step in the right direction as a coordinator.

 

Philbin used the perfect blend of queasiness and timeouts for that "up tempo" scheme.

 

Philbin to lazor "Ryan is really good at rollouts, 20 yard outs and running the ball! Let's make him a pocket passer and get him killed so we can drat Carr!

Gase to Christiansen " let's build our scheme around what our players do well!"

The 1st game Lazor was the OC for the Fins, Carr was already a Raider, and Tanne made his biggest improvement that year as well, under Lazor.

 

Its just as likely that Thill improved last year because he finally had a WR who could get YAC in Landry.

Wallace was not good with YAC here.
In 2013 he averaged 3.98 YAC per catch.
In 2014 it was actually worse, as he averaged 3.74 YAC per catch.

In 2013, Hartline as the second target to Wallace, averaged 4.16 YAC per catch.
In 2014, Landry as the second target to Wallace, averaged 5.27 YAC per catch.

That's more than a yard of YAC per catch. That's significant.

If you watch the press conferences on miamidolphins.com, the DC comes across really strong. Christenson sounds like he's more of an assistant OC to Gase.

Its not just as likely because Landry is still here. The offense rankings with Tannehill:
2012-20th
2013-22nd
2014-8th
2015 before Lazor was fired-16th
2015 after Lazor was fired-22nd

As you can see the offense plummeted in the rankings with a different offensive coordinator but Landry was still here.

Lazor was able to hide Tannehill with a dink and dunk scheme his first year. You can only do that for so long.

Agreed. Give Tannehill another chance but be ready in case he flops like he did last season.

 

You're not often going to get better play out of a third or fourth round pick than you've gotten from Tannehill, especially not behind the line Tannehill has had, and the defense baking him up.

Kirk Cousins was a fourth round pick, he's better than Tannehill.

 

Im sure our OL wouldnt be the same excuse it has been when we have a compentent QB that understands that pass rush is a part of football and actually moves in the pocket even if that wasnt part of the design of the play. Oooohhhh Aaaaahhhhh

P.S. Russell Wilson was a 3rd round QB and he is light years better then Tannehill, if only we could go back to 2012 with that #8 overall pick. But hopefully we fix it this year and get someone prepared for when the inevitable 4-5 record comes mid season and our QB is taking sacks at a rapid pace because he has no pocket presence at all.

earlier, you reiterated that wins and loses are on the QB, yet Tannehill beat Cousins this year head to head.....sooooooooooo......my confusion is.....how are you gonna bumble**** and backbend your way through that inconsistency?

 

He is indeed our guy but I can bet my left testicle that our new staff wont have the same patience with Tannehill that our previous CS did. Everything Tannehill had as a rookie is gone now, nobody in the organization is saddled to him and after next year we.can get out of his contract, and if the last 4 years have anything to do with it, Tannehill is only OUR GUY for 2016 and no further unless he steps up and actually prove he is an above mediocre QB.

 

Ryan certainly could thrive with Gase in town, Ryan has his own bag of issues but Lazor was a flat out idiot. You have to have some ability to mask the weakest part of your unit in our case being the OL. I think Bill's offensive philosophy only works with a certain talent grouping, specifically not ours.

Im confident we will see some growth, but unlike last offseason I refuse to be duped into believing he will be a top QB and this will be a top team until I see it on the field.

Never have I been so confident that Miami would be a playoff team as I was last summer....I told all my mutual football buddies to mark it down....we will be in the playoffs. Then? The season started and a few games in it was obvious to me that we had a subpar team with a subpar QB.

I have hope, yes. But until I see it? They all suck.

Weird, one game means **** but the 10 good games cousins has had makes him better than Tannehill? Cousins started the year terrible then has 10 good games against some pretty terrible competition. Cousins will be the next one year wonder to get a big contract.

How many games, specifically, does it take for wins to go from not being a reflection of the QB's ability to being a reflection of his ability? 2? 5? 300?

 

It will be interesting to see how this helps Tannehill. The last 2 games of the year I saw more out of him, and he looked happier. We will see if any of this translates into next year when the games actually count again.

 

However, Landry avg only 9 yds per catch, so his YAC is misleading, perhaps it was the fact he was running short routes that helped Tanne, on avg he caught 3 yd passes and turned them into 9 yd gains.

So Landry's YAC isn't going to effect the QBs rating when he only avg 9 yds per catch.

More importantly, who had Landry running real short routes in front of Tanne, Lazor.

 

I bet the same people who are saying Cousins is better than Tannehill are the same that said Foles was elite and better too after his great statistical season. Look at him now. Cousins had like 10 dropped INTs this season and was pretty terrible beyond 10 yards. This with a much better scheme and o-line than Tannehill and vs some weak defenses.

I don't think Cousins will plummet like Foles did next season because Washington has weapons who can get open quick, a good o-line and a very favorable scheme, but he'll quickly show he's nothing more than just another guy. Certainly not better than Tannehill.
