Saw this coming don't like the move at all http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap30...s-pull-transition-tag-offer-on-olivier-vernon
Why don't you like the move? We were going to lose him anyway, now at least we can get draft compensation.
Paying vernon anywhere near what his market value is gonna be is a worse move. Let the NYG or Jags break the bank for him.
Letting all of talented young players walk to replace them with older over paid mediocre players seems like a great idea.
Also sends a bad message to our players. Play hard through pain and we will let you go before we will pay you what your worth. Miller and Vernon should have been signed to extensions well before this. Bringing in big old names does nothing but build a paper roster that plays like madden. These deals smell of Ross trying to get some names to sound like were doing something.. We need good role players that fit our system.
ESPN - Schefter reporting that he signed with the Giants Giants sign DE Olivier Vernon Vernon, one of the top free agents on the market, is going to New York, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter and media reports. He has recorded 29 sacks in his first 4 NFL seasons, all with the Dolphins. http://es.pn/1UfLnoE
Yup If amount of money the FA receives factors into the comp. pick, this all but guarantees a 3rd rounder.
Paying Vernon anything near 15+ mil a year seems like a great idea to you? Might want to go back and watch some tape. That would be a huge mistake. This argument could possibly be made for Miller, but the fact that Houston is barely paying him more than what we offered says that it wasn't only about the money.
So now Vernon is the highest paid defensive end ever. 5 years $85 million with $52.5 million GUARANTEED!!!
Holy ****.... isnt that like 8 mil less guaranteed than Suh? Idr. People are delusional if they thought he was staying here.
He was definitely overpaid but year after year I see the Dolphins spend big on free agents on other teams that don't work out and let the players they had on the team who were doing well walk. 2 out of the 4 players the Dolphins should have tried to resign have already signed elsewhere. If we are lucky we get Derrick Shelby or Rishard Matthews back.
You agreed he was overpaid, but are trying to argue we should have kept our young players like him. OV is a prime example of why you usually can't.
We could of if Suh didn't get a ridiculous contract last year. Deal could have probably been made during last season and probably gotten him to agree to much less than he got from the Giants. Lamar Miller was not over paid.
100% speculation. I do not buy the 'much less' one bit. This guy is the highest paid defensive end in history now or close to it, and you think he wasn't aware a payday like this was coming? The second we dropped the tag his agency tweeted the gif of William Wallace yelling 'FREEEEEDOM!' If they knew, he DAMN well knew. not to mention halfway though the season he did absolutely nothing for us to even warranty contract talks. also its pretty clear Miller left for reasons other than money. We didnt lowball him. HOU is only giving him 1 more mil/year.
Absolutely agree on OV. For him to deserve that paycheck he's going to have to be absolutely DOMINANT, something he's never been here. He's been a nice player, an above average DE, IMO, but he's not dominant right now.
I'm soooo glad we didn't even try to pay him anything close to contract the giants gave him. It makes the Mario Williams deal look like a godsend to be honest.
He's now getting paid twice what he's worth, and the Fins only pay imports like that, and low ball their own. Either way, he wasn't worth it, he will become a big problem for the Giants because he will never live up to that contract.
