Opening day is right around the corner so might as well get this thread started.

The news today though not surprising Travis Shaw won the 3B starting job over Pablo. Not sure there are any takers for Oablo, maybe some american league team will consider him as a DH but usually a guy with some homerun power is ideal, Sandoval puts the ball on the ground more often than not.

My thoughts on what may come to the season..

National League..Even year and the Giants are looking good in spring training. St. Louis pitching staff is very strong and will keep them competitive despite a few changes. Diamondbacks is a sleeper team for the wildcard IMO, might not start off hot but i think midseason they will make noise. Mets are more than likely to win the division with just a bit over 90 wins. My Marlins has a lot of holes at their rotation and bullpen, i see them winning 70 games. Look for Dodgers to miss the playoffs. And Cubs to win over 100 games and their division.

American League..Yankees to take a step back this season, i dont expect A-Rod to be as effective as last. Boston, Toronto and Baltimore will each be in a battle for the division in September. Detroit bounces back after an awful 2015 season, but KC gets the division. Twins bats will get hot again but fall short. Rangers get the division, Angels wont even make it to the wildcard. Houston faces Detroit for the one game wildcard.

He's going to have a big year. Control has been there this spring.

Happy Opening Day, everyone! Good luck to most of your teams this season

I have to wait until 10pm to see the start of the Cubs season. If it weren't opening day, there's no way that I'd try to watch the whole thing, but I'm as excited as I've ever been for MLB, so its a special occasion.

Well I hope last night was not going to be a microcosm of the Mets season. Bad defense costing them a run, mediocre control from Harvey, and not hitting with RISP. :omg:

Luckily Harvey, Degrom, Thor, Matz, and eventually Wheeler will be the best rotation in baseball.

I don't have a second favorite team, but I always like it when the Mariners do well. Hernandez has had a hard luck career there in some ways, finishing 11 or more games out of first in all but one season. Their aqua alternate jerseys, especially when paired with the navy base layer, is one of my favorite uniforms in all of sports.

I ended up not even getting five hours of sleep, but it was worth it to watch my Cubbies start the season with a 9-0 win were they still left a lot of runners stranded on base. Could have scored 15 runs easily if not for some amazing plays by the Angels defensively, and Jake made the Angels look helpless.

I loved Griffey growing up, so I always rooted for the Mariners. Even to this day, as a huge Mets fan, I find myself hoping to see the M's be good.

    Love their uniforms too.

It's amazing how many Mets fans are acting like the sky is falling because we lost a game to the defending champs on opening night.

That one inning for Hernandez was horrible... but he handled it like a champ. Seager made/did not make a play/error on a little league error in judgement. Then the SS... dang. I kept getting caught up in why the 1B (Lind?) had the bill of his cap turned up??? They just need F.Rodney now with his hat turned to the side to really look ridiculous. Slap.

I read a stat sheet the other day with ratings for Starting Pitching/ Batting/ Bull pen/ and Defense of all the teams. 1 lowest to 5 highest.

    My two teams:
    Phillies - 1/ 1/ 1/ 2

    A's - 2/ 1/ 2/ 2

Uh oh. Can someone lend me a team to go with this season?

Had a strong feeling Jose would lose today. Still had a ton of strikeouts but the Detroit bats have started out hot.

Kyle Schwarber out for season with tri ligament tear on knee after a second inning collision with Fowler. Originally diagnosed as a sprained ankle. Yeesh

I turned on the game last night at exactly the instant that they ran into one another. Its not a Marino Achilles level of sickness and sadness, but I'm torn up about it. He has so much potential. At least it was at the one position we're most about to deal with it. Thank goodness Dexter Fowler came back and is raking. I'm sure that the team will deal with it internally, with a lot of Soler vs both RH and LF pitching at first, but my hope is that in a little bit when Baez is healthy, then he can take over a lot of that duty as well, and/or take over second and Zobrist moves to LF. If that doesn't work, then we'll see how much freedom Theo has to add a bat in July.

Unfortunately it is part of the game. You have to wonder if he comes back as a first basemen next season. Catchers have to bend down a lot. Might have to switch positions for a season to ease the knee back in the game. Kind of like Mauer but Mauer stayed first base permanently

Its a good and valid point, but he's never going to play 1st with the Cubs. Rizzo isn't just an All Star, but he's become the heart and soul of the team and the biggest fan favorite in a generation. K Schwarbs also isn't likely to be traded anywhere until he proves that he's healthy, so I'd say its LF only for him in Chicago next year, and we'll see how he does.

The Cubs also have a really good catcher at AAA named Wilson Contrares who's going to be ready for the bigs next season, so he was likely to become the primary man at that position anyways.

Mets won as it was a Degrominant day  They had the best winning percentage in their own division of any team last year, in part because the Phils, Braves and Marlins were terrible. This year Miami wont be as bad and they'll probably give the Mets fits as they usually do.

One thing is bothering me right...Michael Conforto in a platoon? Is Terry Collins kidding me? I get he wants to find AB's for a good OF in Juan Lagares but Conforto hit LHP at a 214 clip but in only 14 AB's. How is he supposed to develop that way? Just dumb.

Sorry bout Schwarber. When Harvey and Wheeler went down for TJ Surgery I was heartbroken so I know the feeling. And those years the Mets weren't even good.

Its good that they've gotten better with the surgeries and saving their careers. The Cubs went from having Kerry Wood and Mark Prior set up at the top of their rotation for the next decade, to having Prior's career basically end and Wood losing a few years and then turning into a reliever. Without their injuries, they both might still be pitching (near the end of their careers, of course) today.

It was pretty obvious he was on them.... I mean he hit 4 home runs last year, which was double the amount he hit in 2014 and the total amount he hit from 2011 to 2014.

I know I was being extremely sarcastic because the narrative has always been PEDs help players hit more HRs or gives pitchers more MPH on their pitches.

Its simple if you want to fix the issue. Give the teams an option to cancel the contract upon a positive test ( once it goes through the appeal process which i think they all get) and make that player pay back every penny that he earned from the time the sample was taken....

What we have now is a system where all you have to do is get busted AFTER signing the contract. Or in the case of Cruz cheat enough where another team is willing to take the risk.. There really is no penalty right now.

MLBPA would never agree to something like that. I don't think the system that they have in place right now is that bad, the penalties are longer and the players aren't getting paid when they're suspended. The only thing MLB can do is make the suspensions longer, maybe 100 games instead of 80. The sad part is the PEDs will always be one step ahead of the testing so you'll never have a "clean" game.

I like that MLB is bringing down the hammer. Nothing against the Marlins or Gordon, but I like seeing a name player get taken down and not just all of the minor leaguers.

It sucks because he's arguably our best player, he does it all.. but you have to follow the rules. Giant hole at second base and lead off position now.

It's been a long time coming. 3-0 sweep of the Pirates in Pittsburgh done. Now onto a 4 game set with Washington @ Wrigley for first place in the NL.

The Marlins are doing a good job hanging in there so far. Right there in the thick of it for the WC. I want some of the teams you guys root for to pick it up so that this thread isn't just me crowing about the Cubbies
