It's been a busy night here so i might have missed this with work and other obligations but just came across this. It says Beck to play 1st and 3rd quarters and Henne to play 2nd and 4th quarters. It was made before the Pennington trade became official, so it's either McCown is out or it's a chance for Beck to prove it on the field or possibly as showcasing in a trade (unlikely).
That makes sense, i'm just glad it's looking like Omar's "speculation" was wrong about Beck sitting out.
Wishful thinking is trade to a team desperate for veteran backup like Pitt but i don't see it happening.
Great news. Hope he's traded or released ASAP. Give those reps to players who actually serve purpose to the future of this franchise.
If true, that goes against the other report that he was starting. My guess is because were in attempts to try and trade him now. My guess is with CP aboard, most teams know now we have to get rid of McCown, so were probably going to get stuck releasing him instead of trading. Why would anyone trade for him when they know we have to dump him now. Kind of sucks, but oh well
If Pitts is looking for a veteran backup to replace Batch for a while, there are other guys out there that won't have to be traded for. My guess would be they'd go after one of those guys (Leftwich, Culpepper, etc) before they'd want to trade for a guy for 6 weeks, half of the time being during the preseason...
Well if true and this decision was made before the CP deal it bodes well for Beck. Sure, they probably knew they were going for CP and McCown was not in thier long range plans anymore however, it does show that Beck has shown enough to stay and see what he got in game situations. On the other note.... Now who starts day 1. Will Chad be ready? Will Chad be the veteran backup/insurance policy? Yeah he is getting paid starters money in many peoples opinions, but......... What you all think?
I just read in PFT that the Steelers are brining in Leftwich for a look. You're right on target with this one LFF! I believe Josh will be released fairly quickly, it would be the fairest thing we can do for him.
As reported it will only cost us .5 mill against the cap, chump change. Also it can be spread over 2 years. That will not be a impediment to cutting McCown.
I must be one of the minorities in this, but I think we can roster 4 QB's. I believe the Pats did it Brady's rookie year. If you think about it we can hold onto him until some other team is in need of him. If we dump one extra special team guy to keep him I don't really think it will matter. I don't know the exact stats from last year, but I believe something like half the teams in the NFL had injuries to their starters at some point last year requiring that the back up started. If we can just wait until 2 or 3 teams QB's get hurt it may benefit us in next years draft.
Your right. Who said we have to give him a lot of reps. And if any player from another team is cut that we want to sign during the preseason we can dump him if we need to. Let him run the scout team.
We'd be better served dumping McCown now, and if the need arises, signing him during the season. I'd rather have the depth on our special teams and other units. We're going to play tight, close games, so it's important our defense and special teams are up to the challenge.
If we dump McCown now, do you seriously feel comfortable putting Beck in when Pennington gets injured? Which he is bound to do... McCown has played and won games on horrible teams before, Beck has never won a game and still doesn't look like he has his sea-legs in his 2nd season. The only reason to keep him is to talk him up and get a better pick for him in next year's draft...
We've seen Beck in 4 games and through a little over a week of training camp. Seems like a knee-jerk reaction to dump him now, especially after the front office has spent time working with him. I'd take Beck or Henne over McCown on the off-chance that Pennington gets injured.
Chad will start, he's getting paid 5.75 million a year, that cements his spot in the lineup. He'll start and if he goes down then Beck's in. Eh, I'm not sold on the idea of having four Quarterbacks, especially since we have a lack of depth at the Tackle spot. I rather let McCown go and if one of our guys goes down, we could just sign a FA. Leftwich could be with the Steelers as previously mentioned, I expect Culpepper to sign with the Packers as veteran insurance.
There's no reason to get rid of Beck. Beck is cheaper than McCown and has some legitimate chance of becoming our future starting QB. The pre-season battles will largely determine who the successor will be. At this rate however I expect Beck to develop into basically our Don Strock of the future.
wouldn't it be fitting for mcnown to go to tampa bay to compete with his brother considering garcia and simms are on the outs with gruden? i could see either garcia/simms going to pitt and the other maybe to green bay(actually theres five other unknown teams that are interested in garcia/simms and they are the vikes, cheifs, lions, tigers, and bears o my).
i thought it was widely known that garcia is not happy in tampa bay both with his contract and the whole favre thing thatalmost happened. if favre wouldve actually gone to tampa i could see garcia wanting out(not wanting to be a back-up). theres got to be a bad taste in garcia's mouth for that org right about now..i know i would not be thrilled if i were him.
Yeah but he's still starting there. I can't see him gone because that would give them a whole at the QB spot.
Why is showcasing Beck unlikely ? It makes more sense to keep McCown as a backup than Beck. This way there is a cushion between Pennington and Henne.
o my bad i thought they had like 7 qb's on their roster but after looking your right they have noone better than garcia(simms may be close due to familarity of the offense).
Why keep two veteran Quarterbacks? In Beck and Henne, you have two very talented, early draft choices that will battle out for the starting Quarterback of this team in 2010. I don't understand why they would keep McCown and Pennington.
No problem man. I think they have four QB's on their roster; McCown, Simms, Johnson and Garcia (please correct me if I'm wrong). Simms is likely headed out and that leaves Garcia as their man.
haha plummer is still officially on their roster (i believe) even though he retired to not play for them and i think they have one more guy..o gradkowski(sp) but i guess he got cut or something as i don't see him listed..sorry i must have missed that one.
no reason at all to keep 2 veterens and cut/trade a young qb on a rebuilding team that is still looking for their qb of the future
McCown will not play against the Bucs http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/football/miami-dolphins/story/635231.html
Could not have said it better myself. The future of the Dolphins will be on display whether it be Henne or Beck
I hope one of them lights it up. Don't care who it is. edit: so Pennington won't be playing tonight? Didn't expect him to but it'd be nice since I am going.
http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/football/miami-dolphins/story/635231.html what if Beck turns it on the next couple of weeks? I'm not giving up on him just yet. i like to see Beck with rb + rw in the backfield and a better OL before i give up on him, let him play
