I'm told the #Dolphins are in the process of trading DE Chris McCain to the #Saints.

    Should Trade Fede too.

Whoa. I'm not crazy about that unless they overpaid. We don't have a plethora of pass-rushers on this team.If Wake gets hurt again, we're screwed.

I guess it really depends on the compensation, but I really like Chris McCain and I don't think you had the depth(or the underlying talent) on the edge to let him go.

A 4th rounder seems about right for him. Which means we probably got a 6th rounder and some beads to be thrown at Lauren Tannehill while she breast feeds.

And FWIW, James Walker shares his perspective in brief...:

"A few thoughts on the Dolphins' trade of DE Chris McCain to the Saints: McCain was on the roster bubble, there was a solid chance he wouldn't make the team. Miami has four veteran DEs in Mario Williams, Cameron Wake, Andre Branch and Jason Jones all ahead of McCain. The Dolphins also have to consider former No. 3 overall pick and DE Dion Jordan could take a roster spot down the road when he gets healthy. McCain was an undrafted rookie two years ago. So any draft compensation would be considered a solid turnaround. McCain has some pass-rush skill and can play a variety of special teams."

McCain seemed to never really get a fair shot. I am not sure why even in this new regime.

    Chris Early on ThePhinsider writes:

"A bit of surprising news today as the Miami Dolphins are working on a deal to trade third year edge rusher to the New Orleans Saints. The details of the deal have not been reported, but it would seem as if the Dolphins will get a late round pick as compensation.

Chris McCain began his NFL career as an undrafted free agent and worked his way onto the roster even with Cameron Wake, Olivier Vernon, and high draft pick Dion Jordan. In his first NFL, he blocked a punt that led to a touchdown, and earned his first sack against Tom Brady. He totaled 2 career sacks in limited action.

He was buried on the defensive end depth chart, but had shown flashes of edge rushing ability. However, the coaches recently said that McCain needed to work on his edge setting int he run game. McCain is an outspoken player on twitter, but is a fan favorite. Thanks in part to a cool pre-game ritual of finding a child in the stands and letting the kid walk around the field with him.

Assuming the Dolphins do not acquire a player in the deal, that leaves them at 77 currently on the roster, with the team needing to trim to 75 by 4 pm tomorrow."

    Armando adds:

"And suddenly the glut of defensive end talent the Dolphins seemed to have at defensive end starts to make more sense. The team has four defensive ends they are definitely keeping:

Cameron Wake, Mario Williams, Jason Jones and Andre Branch are on the team. The status of Terrence Fede is unclear based on his recent MCL injury to a knee.

McCain was battlined Fede for a roster spot, assuming the team was willing to keep four ends. He is a superior pass rusher while Fede is the better run defender.

But McCain's apparent inability to hold the edge and the fact the team is comfortable with other possibilities at the spot sealed McCain's time in Miami.

Interestingly, the same social media activity that led McCain to be popular among many fans, also had detractors within the Dolphins organization. And for a player at the bottom of the roster, that played a small role in his being moved..

One more thing: The Dolphins seem poised to commit more spots to the tackle position than perhaps even the end spot. Both Julius Warmsley and Chris Jones have had good camps and preseasons.

At tackle, Ndamukong Suh, Jordan Phillips, and Earl Mitchell seem assured of spots barring a trade of some sort."

I'll never forget the Bears game when Brandon Marshall was talking **** to one of the DB's and McCain got in his face and Marshall walked away like a little *****.

He wasn't a good fit in the W9, so they were probably going to cut him anyway.

I think this trade does nothing for the 'phins. IMO draft picks after the 5th round are lottery tickets and next to worthless.

However, what I do like about the trade is that it is good for McCain. He gets to the Saints earlier than he would if he was cut, and it means the Saints are a little less likely to cut him since they invested something into acquiring him. It goes some way to show the players that the 'phins organisation is looking after them and to create better player/management relations, which have been bad for a long time.

I am actually sad to see this trade happen... not because I think we will be sorely missing in depth at his position, but because I think we will be sorely missing a great man that cares about his community. I wish him all the best and will be cheering for him. Until he faces us, of course.

I'll admit, I was never a fan of his. A lot of bark and very little bite.

I will say what he does for kids and the fans in general is admirable. Much respect there and I wish him luck in New Orleans.

McCain always teased us with potential but in reality he could never quite get over the hump from potential to production. Not a bad trade considering our depth and McCain now has a chance to finally produce since the Saints have far weaker depth. Good luck to him and kudos to our GM

    Right there with ya.

There is a ton of support for him on this board but in my eyes he was never (and is not) close to the player he is touted as. Liability against the run. Body of a 34 OLB. Still unproven as a rusher.

Like I said, a lot of support for a very underdeveloped player. Here he is about to be cut and the team gets a 7th for him. Not bad.

Watch Hazel and McCain become playmaking role players on other teams while our guys (Caroo, Mario Williams, Jason Jones, Andre Branch) become flops. It's the Dolphin way.
