That can not be accurate. $20.3 million a year? 1.25 million a game? Please tell me I am seeing it wrong....
His salary against the cap is $11,600,000 this season. For a five year starting QB, that salary is probably at the lower end of the scale. The $20.3 million is his cap hit in 2017 if he is still on the roster. Of course at this point I would say the odds of him being on the roster next year with that cap hit is much less than 50%. Unless he suddenly becomes a much better QB over the next 12 games then he has been over the last four and a quarter years, I really don't see him being on the roster in 2017.
Miami did hedge its bet backloading the deal. If he had panned out, they would have restructured anyway, giving more bonus money.
Indeed, overthecap states that if Ryan is cut Post June 1st in the 2017 off season, the Dolphins would have 14.5 million in cap savings with 5.8 mill in dead money. http://overthecap.com/player/ryan-tannehill/717/
I don't see how he can be, unless his play somehow dramatically improves and we make the playoffs. That INT he threw in the 4th Qtr vs Cincy was so typical of his time here. He is not a good QB. Gase has to see this...
I think he (Gase) is starting to see it. I believe he thought T-hill had the tools to be better and he could steer him in that direction, but the more he watches him daily, I have to believe he's come to the same conclusion the majority of the world has come to...he isn't very good as a starting QB.
You know, of course, what that means. He will wind up with a team with a stable ownership, front office, and coaching staff - and come back to beat the snot out of us!
Haha...yeah, that's the Dolphins way...but in all seriousness I’d have no qualms about facing Tannehill. That’s actually one of the big reasons I’m off the Tannehill bandwagon. If I wouldn’t be scared to face you, that says a lot. He’s got clear holes in his game physical and mentally. A big part of why he’s not had any competition over the last 5 years is that he’s been on a team that’s got such low expectations. It’s likely that as part of a more stable franchise he’d have been replaced or over-taken by this point. Miami is objectively one of the less reliable franchises in the NFL right now. If they don’t see Tannehill as a starting caliber QB, who will? Cleveland has good coaching and lots of draft picks with which to work. They might need a QB but why in the world would they tie themselves to an average to below-average veteran? It doesn’t make sense from their perspective. Chip Kelly and the 49ers might give him a shot but it’s unlikely they’d give Miami anything for him. They’d probably just wait for his release so it’s kind of moot. Even if he went there, Miami wouldn’t be schedule to face him until 2020 which would require he start for 4 years. That’s highly unlikely.
Tanny did the same thing in NY. Bad QB and gave him a huge "confidence" contract. Here we are in Miami. Bad QB given a huge "confidence" contract. So get ready for Idzik to come in and cut everyone and faildraft for 2 years when tanny is done screwing the franchise.
1. It wasn't a confidence contract. Letting Tannehill hit the FA market would of been stupid, especially after 2014 when he played pretty well before the offensive line imploded with injuries subsequent shuffling. From 2012-2014 he was trending upwards and posted a career high 93 QB rating in his third year, while Sanchez got his new deal after he posted a 78 QB rating (career high at that point). Apples and oranges. Tannehill showed improvement, Sanchez didn't. 2. The going rate for a starting QB in this league isn't cheap. Furthermore, the contract, like many other QB's have, gave him money up front with little guarantees on the back end in case Miami wanted to cut him if he didn't evolve into a franchise QB. There was nothing stupid about it. It made sense to lock him up with the ability to cut him later at little cost. Tannenbaum has been questionable at best, both past and present (this years rosters additions and subtractions were ugly), but I don't think he mishandled Tannehill's deal at all. What Tannenbaum and the Miami organization (prior to his arrival) have done is mishandle is the offensive line. Tannehill is still under constant pressure and duress. In 5 years, Miami hasn't made significant improvements in blocking, despite FA signings and draft picks being spent. There's no chance of any QB coming into Miami and having success when they can't get through their reads and progressions because they're facing a four man rush that gets home, while the back 7 drop into coverage. Tannehill has shown the ability to play really well when he's protected, as rare as that is. As far as bringing in another QB via FA/Draft/Etc... It's going to be groundhog day until Miami fixes the offensive line. EDIT: Fun Fact. Albert, Pouncey, and James have played a total of 7 games together. Miami is 6-1 in those games. The sole loss coming from Green Bay when Joe got queasy and gifted Green Bay a timeout after a sack that made it 4th and long. - If Albert and Pouncey can stay healthy... - If James can figure his **** out asap... - Add in a dash of Tunsil... If all three things come together, I think there's a huge chance this thread wins the overreaction award by seasons end.
The "fun fact" surrounding the OL is a very good one, however, saying if all three of those things come together, this becomes a huge over reaction award winner or something... is a bit of a reach really IMO. The chances of Albert and Pouncey staying healthy together from this point out are pretty slim. Both are guys now at this point in their careers that can't stay healthy. Pouncy has been injured far too much recently, and Albert is just an injury waiting to happen. As for James... you're right, he needs to get his stuff together. This OL should be a strong point, but it can't be, and hasn't been because it lacks the most important ability in football. Availability. I think it's far more likely at this point that one of them gets hurt again and misses time than it is that they stay healthy and come together to form a strong unit. If they can, I think you're right, the offense should flourish, but it's a really big IF in my opinion.
How about that, there actually are some reasonably intelligent Dolphins fans after all. I'm a little surprised.
The OL has protected much better the first 4 games, but defenses have no fear of him doing anything to get away from the pressure. They also know he is going to throw at Landry and or a short 5 yard pass. Easier to defend. Some of that is no doubt play calling.
Miami has certainly been bottom tier as pass protecters, but bad pass blocking is quite common in the NFL...you have about 12 fanbases who claim their OL is the worst in football history. Fact of the matter is it is becoming harder and harder to pass block. So to me? Assuming Ryan continues this play and is gone next season? You go out and get a mobile QB even if he is lacking in arm talent. Not many pocket passers can overcome today's OL struggles, time to counter this with a QB who can make chicken salad out of chicken ----.
Admit what? These "gotcha!" games are childish. I've never compared Ryan Tannehill to his peers, and I don't care too. I only care about OUR team and how Ryan is performing. I know the sky is falling around here, as it has been for a long time now, but my opinion on Ryan hasn't really changed. He's a decent to solid quarterback who sometimes flashes brilliance but overall is too inconsistent. I believe he's good enough to win with but not someone who can carry the team himself consistently. I also believe the circumstances around him have often been poor, but I know that's just an "excuse" to those who don't like him. It is what it is. No one's mind is gonna change unless he soars unquestionably or falters unquestionably. It's also only been four games with Adam Gase. Forgive me if I'd like to see him in this offense a little longer.
Well said. I'm rolling with you on this one. No one has offered a better option for right now than Tannehill. The coulda, shoulda, woulda crowd is becoming pretty droll.
I think people have jumped the gun a bit. It's still early. If he doesn't improve as the season goes on, then sure, look for an upgrade. Great quarterbacks don't grow on trees though, and the TEAM around him needs to improve as well.
He's been good for a decade though. Not just this past year. He has a one pretty down year (last) and people were saying he's no better. He's better. I've always wanted him over Jake Long. We had Vernon Carey coming off a year he graded well as an LT after sliding over. Plus LT along with WR are the most overrated positions. anyway, we didn't pick him but it's another example of us trying to tear a good qb down to a lower level (not you but those who did).
Meh, hindsight is 20/20. Tannehill completed his second year at that point and improved over his rookie season. Then improved again in year 3. Derek Carr may very well turn into a star player, but at the time drafting him wouldn't have made sense. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Nope; and I don't care. And if you're going to try and downplay that based on opponent, I don't care either. Because common sense should tell you that regardless of opponent, your OL should be better with all of your starters on the field (especially guys like Pouncey and Albert), and therefore your pass pro should be better, and therefore your QB performance. Football is the ultimate team sport for a reason.
It was his 3rd year, and it was his best year. I'm not saying Philbin should have been listened to, but that doesn't make him wrong either. Something in Tannehill made Philbin turn on him. It very well could be, he blamed Tanny for having his mentor Sherman fired. I don't discount that at all, it could be very petty. As for Carr, sure he can take a turn for the worse but he's vastly improved each year as well. Some guys have mojo, others don't. Despite what the numbers say. Carr's got it. The one thing about Carr is, he's never been a turnover machine. The one thing about Carr though, and my same criticism about Tanny before this year, is his ypa is pretty low. With a 68% completion rate, and a 7.0 ypa, that is some pretty low efficiency.
The impressive stat with Carr is TD%. That's what's driving his ratings way up. Average TD% in the league is about 4.6% and Carr has 5.9% this year after 5.6% last year. Otherwise, his stats aren't too impressive (although this year's INT% is very low). Anyway, I also agree it's looking more and more like Philbin was right with Carr. That's one rare (but important) instance where Philbin has to be given credit.
I really don't have any issues with the way we've let things play out with regards to Tannehill. We drafted him and let him play and we have given him until year 5 to show that he can be our starting Qb. He's had his moments and he's had good seasons so there was never any reason to just dump him or draft another Qb really high. He has a year in a new system to show he can play, if he doesn't then we move on or at least get serious competition for him into camp whether thats a draft pick, trade, free agent, etc. Its hard with Ryan because he's really frustrating at times but then he's really good at times and he obviously has a lot of talent. It may wind up that he's just too inconsistent and we need to find a better Qb. Who knows, he may make some adjustments in the new system and wind up staying here long term. The deal we signed him to was not ridiculous or damaging long term. We have ourselves set up to give him 5-6 seasons to show he can play and play well, I don't have an issue with that considering that he has played well for stretches. If he was just a complete bust then obviously we should have moved on already but he hasn't been a complete bust. There are tons of examples of Qbs that were in the league for years before actually putting it together. Its tough to be patient, especially when you see young Qbs putting it together earlier but it is what it is. To me I'm more concerned with the front office and Tannenbaum in particular than I am with Ryan or Gase. If we can't put together a complete team it doesn't matter if we have a HOF Qb, we aren't going anywhere. We are constantly shuffling the offensive line, we haven't drafted well for stretches and obviously we've had some terrible coaching staffs here.
