Looks like it will be released later this year. They need to get their AC cash infusion somehow.

I've read a few rumors that suggest that Ubisoft would take another year off from AC and not release a game in 2017 if they felt it wasn't going to be perfect, but I find that hard to believe, with as much money and monpower that they put into the series. Syndicate was a very good game for what it was. I think people were just so down on the one before that, that it left a bad taste in their mouths. For me, the biggest issue is how they're ignoring/disregarding the real story of the series, the modern day one. Without that, the gameplay that takes place in the past is missing meaning.

I've started playing Syndicate. So far it feels like Black Flag running in the Unity engine. And I mean that both as a compliment and as an insult.

I'm really getting fed up with the writing in this series. Exposition focuses more on one-liners than on telling a story. Pacing is awful, we're given no introduction or lead-in and we're just sent on our way to Do Assassin-y Things™. This is a problem that began rearing its head in AC3, where we were sent after targets with minimal explanation, and became exacerbated in Black Flag and Unity.

Patrice Desilets didn't die for this ****.

The gameplay and the graphics are very strong, there's a lot to do and a lot of variety, but sadly, I wouldn't get your hopes up very high for the story.

I suppose that I can give up on them ever getting back to the way that I want them to be, then. So sad.

I guess I feel that if there isn't a larger story arc, then it all kind of feels empty and without meaning. The whole point was that you're playing as a modern day person who's experiencing the memories of his/her ancestor, as part of a larger fight between the two warring factions and the conspiracy within, and then they add the deeper layer of the precursor race and all of their artifacts. It was all incredibly interesting to me. Not necessarily the character of Desmond speficically, but the whole narrative and universe that they had created, and how all of the games were ties together through that.

I loved talking to Shaun and Rebecca, and all of the notes about the historical people and places and whatnot, and then having the ancient adventure then tie into the modern day story at the end of the game. It felt very rewarding. The last few games have stepped back from all of that almost entirely, and its lost its edge and touch to me. The Victorian London aspects of Syndicate were all great, but they put almost no effort into the anything else, and it sounds like that will be the plan now. I feel kind of abandoned, as someone who's been with the series since the announcement of the first game about 10 years ago.

You'll still get to do most of those things. There honestly hasn't been an interesting story (modern or past) in the series since Revelations IMO. I still enjoy the games, however. Flesh out historic settings and make characters likable and I'm good.

I agree with this. And it began in AC3. Revelations was forgivable as a relatively story-light game due to it being a placeholder. But now, AC3 wrapped up the original Desmond story in a rather unsatisfying way, and now we're left with… hints, clues, and not a whole lot else. The AC Initiates site that gave continuous modern day updates is gone. The modern day story is both completed and abandoned. It's quite ridiculous.

Yeah, I kept thinking that they were just having some issues getting the game transitioned from the previous generation of consoles to the new ones, and that once they put that to bed, we'd be back on schedule and pick up things the way that they had been before. Lots of evidence that those things aren't happening now though. Frankly, its lazy. Very EA of Ubisoft.

I believe the writing team that had been assembled for AC3 (after Patrice Desilets had already left) was then disbanded around the time of AC4. They wrote some core backstory and some lore moving forward and then just moved on to other projects or quit.

Let's see what relevance Empire has. Since it's the furthest back in the timeline, it may have the most to do with the core backstory.

I'll believe that when I see it, too. They haven't included the Arthur Conan Doyle DLC with the Syndicate season pass; you have to buy that separately. They would probably categorize it as non-critical to the story, but then again, they've also categorized the entire modern day as non-critical. So I don't trust their judgment.

Also, new rumor on AC Empire: the new main character will be part of a new trilogy, and the locations will be the ancient Egyptian empire, ancient Rome, and ancient Greece.

Well, if thats true, then I think its a positive development. At least something that bridges the games together and connects them. The ancient cultures could be cool, and go back to the series' roots as far as weapons. Greece offers little to nothing in the way of tall buildings to climb though, so I wonder if underground exploration would be more of a theme.

Ancient Greece's parkour would depend on the exact location. If Athens, as is most likely, then there would be plenty to climb on. It would be quite similar to Rome in Brotherhood, actually, with districts set at different elevations.

My hope is that the series gets back to focusing on areas instead of just one city, though. This started in Brotherhood, and while it was welcome then as a way of cutting down development time, the fact is that AC2 had two large and two medium size cities, AC3 had two medium size cities plus a massive countryside, and Black Flag had three small to moderate size cities. This thing where the series takes place in one city (more specifically, interior sections of one city!) needs to go. Unity and Syndicate both failed to let you explore the entirety of their cities, and didn't offer anything extra to compensate for that limited range.

Would be pretty cool if you could hop in a boat from the Nile delta and sail to Greece.

I saw that earlier, too. It doesn't really look like an AC game, but of course, it would be an early build, plus they've had extra time to change things around.

If its real, then I welcome the return to exploring large, cool, underground spaces.

Well I expect them to release the game in 2017, so I think they'll reveal it around April and most of their E3 conference will be AC. Outside of South Park I don't think they'll have much else to talk about (probably some Ghost Recon stuff but that's it).

Ubisoft has plenty to talk about. New Division DLC, Ghost Recon Wildlands, the new AC game, South Park, their filler crap like Just Dance and Rayman, For Honor, and new stuff. My guess is we'll see DLC for 2016 games, the new AC game, a new IP, and a surprise sequel to something.

    http://www.vg247.com/2017/05/01/ass...-picture-of-life-at-ubisoft-in-new-interview/

A little complicated, but this is a summary of a translation of an interview of the creator of the AC series, who is no longer employed by UbiSoft, and has not been involved in the games for some time even when he was. Paints a very negative picture of the developer, which doesn't really come as a surprise, since they've gone out of their way to water it down.

A lot of his commentary seems like sour grapes. You can't complain that others' opinions matter as much as your own while wishing that only yours mattered. Desilets wanted all the resources of a large publisher without surrendering control. It doesn't work that way.

    New rumors:

Assassin's Creed Empire has supposedly been renamed to Assassin's Creed Origins.
The game has 2 main characters.
Story progression is either less-linear or is nonlinear, and character progression is Skyrim-like.
Can travel across the ancient Mediterranean; ancient Egypt, ancient Greece are mentioned.
    Naval combat is back.

I bet that pet eagle is used similarly to the way Far Cry Primal used it. I personally liked it.

As for the combat being similar to the Witcher 3 I'm OK with that. It's deeper than traditional AC combat.

"Darby McDevitt is working on the plot."

Great, so the modern day will continue to be barely existent and won't go anywhere.

It certainly seems that way, which both pisses me off and depresses me. But it is what it is. The gameplay and graphics of Syndicate were terrific, as was most of the voice acting. If they can take all of that, and then deepen the RPG elements while giving it a good ancient story, then at least it could very well be a good stand alone game, even if its not the AC game that I want it to be. Of course, thats not a safe assumption, as other series have taken steps backwards in some areas as they move forward. So who knows. We'll see as it goes.

The idea of the modern day segments taking place in the same places as the ancient areas makes sense. It worked well in Brotherhood. But who is the playable assassin in the modern day, and are they just slapping their ***** looking for another Piece of Eden, or are they actually going to resolve the modern day war?

I agree. And hopefully not more horrible first person only, nameless (you're the hero!) nonsense. That was terrible. Give us a real, third person controlled character and some story!

The most obvious candidate for playability is Galina Voronina. She's one of the only master assassins left in the modern day, was in Syndicate's modern day story, and debuted in the old AC Initiates site that Ubisoft took down (because who needs a dedicated meta story when you can just not do it, amirite?) Plus she satisfies Ubisoft's internal SJWs.

Honestly it might be interesting to play as Shaun. He seemed to start his assassin training after AC3, so it might be interesting to see his progression.

They could always say he wrote the database entries last year or something, with Bishop and Rebecca adding snark to his snark.
