Figured I'd get a discussion going on this game. It's supposed to be Sony's next big first party franchise and it's arriving February 28th. It's a third person action RPG made by Guerrilla Games (Killzone devs).

    Gameplay

    E3 2015 reveal

E3 2016. There are a few gameplay videos floating around but I believe this to be the best one.

Story trailer just released today, actually.

Anyone else interested in this? Looks like a day one for me...

I can't get over how stupid it looks. Paleo-futuristic game about wildlife robotic dinosaurs? What? No. Just, no. If I wanted to take LSD I'd take LSD.

Totally, 100% all in. I've been interested since the get go, and only moreso as they put out more info. In fact, I'm cool with the fact that I'll likely be delaying my purchase of ME:A because I'll still be playing H:ZD.

The story and game play both look really cool. I like the fact that the whole game seems to be a mystery that you can unravel as you go, and that the game will reward you for digging deeper and exploring things that aren't necessary for the main story. The developers describe the RPG elememts as somewhere in the middle. Not as deep as Skyrim, but not as shallow as AC. It also gets bonus points in my book because even though its set in a post apocalyptic world, it doesn't seem to have nearly the dark, forboding tone that so many of today's games do.

I'm now waiting on this one as I wind down my first playthrough of FFXV and put that on the shelf.

There are some people who think that the game needs to be delayed so that it doesn't overlap with the Switch. I say thats pointless. The gamer overlap for Zero Dawn has to be much bigger with Mass Effect, which releases three weeks later. If they push the game back, they're only hurting themselves, losing buyers to ME. I don't think that they'll lose much of anything to the Switch. Heck, look at this thread. Those enamored with the Nintendo system aren't interested in the game anyways

I thought it was gonna be delayed cuz Sony delays all their first party stuff these days [emoji39]

    That reason seems silly though.

It was already delayed though. From november to the end of February. There shouldn't be an actual need now, as they seem pretty solid on it coming out.

Uncharted 4 was delayed twice. It certainly can happen.

    http://www.ign.com/articles/2017/01/30/horizon-zero-dawnas-open-world-is-the-star-of-the-show

A good, long article from someone who has played a few hours of the game's most recent build. Very complimentary.

    http://www.polygon.com/2017/1/30/14435128/horizon-zero-dawn-hands-on-ps4-pre-review-preview

Another one from Polygon. This one includes a photo of the skill tree from the game. They talk about the fact that the game has not only a day/night cycle, but also dynamic weather. While this isn't a new thing for today's RPGs, I'm happy to hear that its in there.

And, the game has gone gold! This doesn't guarantee that there won't be another delay, but it makes it less likely.

A lot of good things leaking out about the game. A few features I've seen"

-Dialogue trees similar to Mass Effect
-A good amount of side quests
    -Scaling walls like Uncharted
-Alloy has something like a Witcher Sense for tracking footprints
    -Stealth kills like AC
-A good crafting system from parts she finds in kills

So, it looks like they've taken good ideas from all over and used them to make their game better, and thats always a good thing, IMO.

With the game out in eight days, the review embargo is now over. Here are a handful that I found this morning. I'm honestly loving everything that I hear. While the game may not be specifically what everyone is looking for, the reviews are generally praising what the studio has done, and the details seem to be what I enjoy. The US gamer review bashes it for doing things that most other open world RPGs do, but honestly, those "tedious" things are fun for me.

Jeff Gerstman of Giantbomb (probably my favorite reviewer in the game) gave it a perfect score.

I haven't read anyplace where someone has played the game fully through, doing everything that they can. However, it sounds like a quick playthrough takes around 40 hours, a normal one (where you spend time exploring and gathering) about 60, and most estimate that a dedicated semi-completionist would take over 100 hours. I was concerned that the game might be shorter than that, so I'm relieved and excited that there's a lot to do.

I've seen it takes about 50 hours to do everything. It's technically an RPG but the elements are rather light so it's not a grindfest or anything.

50 would be comperable to a typical AC or ME game for me, which is good enough. However, the way that I play, I think I'll likely end up putting more time into it than a lot of people.

I was able to pick it up here in Oregon at 9PM at Gamestop, since that is 12AM back East. I was interested since I saw the E3 reveal, and after an hour of play, my wife summed it up as 'Tomb Raider meets Skyrim' which is not a bad thing.

After so much time with No Man's Sky, I hate having to learn another control scheme, but I just need a few more hours to get comfortable.

Great looking game (on standard PS4) and crazy good on the PS4 Pro I imagine. Really good reviews and mechanical dinosaurs. What's not to like?

The melee combat feels so good. That's a surprise. The opening is a bit slow, so power through and once it opens up it becomes engrossing. The story is actually quite interesting.

I guess it depends on where you're coming from with regards to the opening, with young Aloy. I have two little girls, and the oldest is about the same age as she is during that sequence. She reminded me a lot of my daughter, to the point that it got me a little emotional at one point, lol. For me, it was a terrific way to get attached to the character.

I've spent about two hours with the game so far, and totally love it. The controls and "weight" of things are really, really good. Its interesting to figure things out as I go, as the game does a good job of making things available, but not obvious. Someone else had said that the gameplay was a blend of AC and Skyrim, and thats how I'd describe it as well. So far, its awesome, and beautiful. Looking forward to digging deeper tonight.

I'm taking things very slowly. Combat is brutal. I've yet to figure out any tricks beyond hiding in the grass and stealth killing one robot. If I can't get em' that way, then even a couple of Watchers can kill me if I'm not careful. Just got to level 6. The bow is so much harder than most archery games. Even when my aim is right on the enemy, sometimes the arrow flies away sideways and misses. I estimate that I've died about 10 times so far, and learned the VERY hard lesson that the game does NOT save automatically. Planning on trying to level up a few more times before I move on in the story.

Yeah the game makes you pay for being dumb. I'm level 16 and starting to see some newer bigger and meaner machines. The story is far better than I would have guessed. It sucks because not very far in (going off of the map space I've cleared), and Zelda is tomorrow

Are you going to try and play both? ME:A comes out in three weeks, and I'm just going to wait to buy that one until I'm done with this. For the most part, I'm a one game at a time guy.

LOL, I had to Google FOMO. I hadn't seen that one before.

Honestly, the more that I play of H:ZD, the more engrossed I am, and I'm only 6 hours of very patient, methodical play in. Other games can wait!
