"A person familiar with the discussions says the NFL is considering moving the Miami Dolphins' season opener against Tampa Bay to another site or earlier this week because of Hurricane Irma.

The person confirmed the discussions to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Monday because the league and teams aren't talking publicly about the options.

Switching the game to Thursday or Friday is being considered, the person said, because Irma could threaten South Florida over the weekend. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. EDT Sunday in Miami.

Playing the game at another site Sunday is also being discussed, the person said.

The teams share the same bye week in November, but would prefer to avoid moving the game to that weekend.

During a Monday media session, Dolphins head coach Adam Gase said he's preparing his team to play and will leave the decisions to other team officials.

"It's out of our hands, they'll tell us when to play and we'll show up.""

Already lost one home game to London for the Super Bowl. Playing the game in Tampa would be awful. Orlando a little better.

But it would be best to play it Friday night in Miami and nationally televise it. Friday Night Football!

National Hurricane Center saying 20% chance of tropical storm-force wind speeds (>39 mph on a per-minute average) by Saturday (and should be worse Sunday). They better play this game early and give us some extra rest for game 2. As Dolphins1Beatles said we already lost a home game. And it would really suck if we can't pass the ball because of some stupid storm (just imagine our run defense)!

Well aside from Orlando on Sunday, another of the rumored options would be moving it to the Bye week since they both have it at the same time. That would be terrible also to not have that week of rest with the playoff chase happening. AND Miami plays at New England the week after the bye. We need all the help we can get in NE. I don't think the Dolphins & Bucs would agree to that though?

Friday Night makes the most sense and put it nationally on CBS/NFL Network.

Bucs Coach on NFL: "They've just told us that they've started their preparations and they're working on multiple contingency plans, too numerous to mention. Again, it's premature. It is a possibility and they're working on it."

Apparently they have to decide by tomorrow night.

I remember a Friday night game against the Chefs years back because of a Hurricane. They lost.

I hope they move it to earlier this week and don't move the game to Jacksonville or something. The Phins already lose a home date getting sent to London again.

At this point, they have to move the game to a different venue, or a different week. People need to be focused on preparing/evacuating. Not football.

So we open the season with a bye week, most likely.

Gonna be a LONG 16 games, boys and girls.

Also...fantasy teams about to be SCREWED.

Why would a Bye Week be more preferable to a Thursday game? The team has had plenty of time to prepare for Tampa.

Ross is an idiot if he lets them move it to the bye week. Friday is by far the most sensible decision.

I doubt it's a matter of Ross "letting" them do anything.

Yeah, Ross likely doesn't have anything to do with this one. It's going to be the league calling the shots here.

I still think the most sensible solution here, if you cant get it done in Miami somehow, move it to a neutral site. To me, losing the bye week and making two teams play 16 straight is completely irresponsible on the league's part. I'd have a hard time believing the NFLPA will sign off on that as well.

Talk about having to face some adversity to start the season, then have to play 16 straight? That's ridiculous.

There's apparently precedent for playing the game on Friday as well as for playing the game during the bye week in exactly these types of circumstances, both involving Miami.

In 1992, Dolphins and Patriots rescheduled to play the game during their bye week because of Hurricane Andrew:
    http://articles.latimes.com/1992-08-29/sports/sp-5471_1_reschedule-dolphins-patriots

In 2005, KC and Miami played on Friday due to Hurricane Wilma:
    http://www.espn.com/nfl/news/story?id=2198438

However, note that the Friday game wasn't televised nationally because the NFL has an antitrust exemption that allows the league to bundle their TV rights (instead of allowing individual teams to sell TV rights separately). So to receive permission to play on Friday they apparently had to forego nationally televising it.

I would think, if they move the game to the bye, then the dolphins should probably go to a location away from south Florida, bring all their families with them and start to prepare for their first opponent at that location..

if they just ride the storm out and stay put, then who knows when they will be able to start preperation for their first opponent.

if they found out in a couple hours that its moved to the bye, get out of dodge, find a good campus or locale way north, and start prepping for next week..have to remember, the season is still gonna play out, and all of the people in the organization have to focus on it no matter what so they don't fall behind..

maybe Ross can have the team go to Michigans campus for a week and a half to prepare..

There's another tropical storm Jose behind Irma..so what I just said makes even more sense to me.

The Dolphins are literally one of my favorite things in life. As a witness/survivor to Hurricane Andrew though, I will quickly say **** football! No player should be on the field anywhere while their family is trying to board up houses and deal with the massive traffic on I-95 heading north...the Dolphins will get slaughtered in that game and the league will take serious heat for being so selfish.

I really don't care what the league does, but we don't need to play football this week UNLESS it's tomorrow (Wed). Thurs and Friday need to be able the players and the Dolphins staff taking care of their family.

Oh, and it's not just the tropical storm behind Irma....there's a hurricane forming in the gulf as we speak. Within the next 2 days, Florida will have three storms barreling down on it. I've always been fascinated with big storms and I've been tracking all of these since before they formed....Irma has been shattering expectations and it very likely will be the next Andrew for someone.

I agree for this week but you have to immediately start worrying about next week..no one is gonna give us a pass on the season...Ross needs to make a move if we find out that the game will be played during the bye.

I'd prefer they play in Tampa rather than play 16 straight games. A Thursday night game would be the best case scenario for Miami.
