I know that this will not be a popular topic for many reasons, but Kaep may be the only salvation possible for the 2017 season. I am convinced that Cutler will not be able to turn things around in time this season and Moore is as brittle as a butterfly. It pains me to say that because I'm nuts over Matt Moore but at this point, we just don't have a QB1 anywhere on the roster. Gase has a super tough decision- he can ride things out with Cutler, or he can start Moore and hope like mad he doesn't take a head shot. Our line has been playing decent but not well enough to keep Moore clean on every down, so I think Cutler is the only choice right now, today. But what if we considered Colin Kaepernick? Hear me out for a moment. Kaepernick is a career 88.9 QB entering his 7th year, which many consider a player's prime at that position. He has ample playoff experience, posted a 4:1 TD/Int ratio last year and plays a lot like Tannehill on the field. While he's never had big numbers in total passing yardage, Kaep is efficient and almost the PERFECT FIT for our offensive system. He is also better in almost every category that matters when compared to Cutler, about on-par with Moore and he is in peak physical condition (per his trainers, which may be complete BS). Personally, I've hated Kaep ever since the protests started because I believe that it's more of a distraction than an actual movement. Yes, there is racial injustice in the world and it does need to be handled, but taking a knee does not get that accomplished. If anything, it's only caused a greater divide as people see kneeling as disrespecting the flag, our soldiers and our country. At the same time though, I believe as an American we have to respect the rights of others. I don't agree with Kaep's approach, but I'm being a hypocrite if I say that he doesn't have the right to stand up for what he believes. What's more un-American? A guy kneeling for the anthem or somebody saying that a black guy has no right to peacefully protest? I realize that I'm on the wrong side of the equation here and that my personal views shouldn't influence my loyalty to my favorite football team. We all know that there's only one reason Kaep is not playing right now, which could make him our "2017 Tunsil" in that we're getting a solid player for pennies on the dollar. If we did want to take a chance on Kaep, we could offer the league minimum and see what he says. If the answer is no and the media got wind of it, then the whole narrative changes since you have a QB turning down employment in the NFL. That kills the whole "punished for my beliefs" thing and takes a lot of heat off the league. So yeah, I'd offer a 1 year contract at the league minimum and see what happens. More than anything though, he would not be a distraction (since Gase said players can't kneel) and he would be the best possible fit for a real QB1 for this season. That would also give Tannehill real competition for the starting slot in 2018 and that's clearly what would be best for our team- make RT earn that starting role. If I'm Adam Gase and I know that there's zero chance we can compete with Atlanta in six days, I'm giving Kaep's agent a call and scheduling a private workout. Maybe we don't sign him but I think it's a travesty not to explore other options while this season is still salvageable. Like it or not, he is our best possible option for the next 12 weeks.
Just my opinion KeyFin, but regardless of any potential merit on the football side, signing Kap just seems to me to be too unrealistic a possibility to seriously discuss. Maybe the question should be: do you really think Ross and Gase would seriously consider signing Kap given how he's been blacklisted by every team so far irrespective of their need at QB?
I'm not sure he's really "blacklisted." I'm sure some teams don't want the headache, despite the fact he said he wouldn't kneel this season but I don't think NFL owners are conspiring against him. The problem with CK is he's a system specific QB. You know who else doesn't have a job? RGIII... These type of players require an offense built around their running ability. I once heard Colin Cowherd give a good analogy... Learning an offense is like learning a new language. If you're signing CK, the learning curve is huge. I don't think it can be done now that the season is already underway. Seattle made the most sense and they passed. The only benefit to signing CK is mobility. Look at Watson in Houston. That offensive line is AWFUL and his ability to run away from defenders and make something happen is the only reason that offense moves the chains. Given how terrible our offensive line, having that mobility would be nice.
Way too late at this point. He hasn't played in awhile. No way he could jump right in and start playing at a high level.
I agree , won't accomplish much at this point. Unless he did well to compete next year. But if he plays that means we suck and add the controversy he brings, it's enough to stain this team and make rash decisions
Only way this happens is if Cutler gets injured or quits. They've invested a contract in Cutler, they're not about to grab a second one. Besides, we know that Gase and co. look to OL play etc. as the cause of QB issues - and the Foerster incident only exaggerates that. That's going to be their focal point. If anything, Moore will eventually need replacing as a backup, so money would, in general, be better spent bringing in his eventual replacement with promise.
I'd sign him in a heartbeat. I actually preferred Cutler over Kaepernick initially (even though I maintain that Colin is the better quarterback), but Cutler is not even playing average.
No QB not named Aaron Rodgers would be playing better than average on this offense. I'm on the record as saying that I wanted the Dolphins to at least take a look at Kap. However, I think if the o-line can give Ajayi some holes and Cutler some time this offense can explode.
It might have been interesting to see what he would have done IF he had been signed instead of Jay. But I don't think you take on another large contract to try to salvage the year. This is just throwing good money after bad. Gase needs to find a solution that doesn't involve another 10 million dollar contract...
There is no good reason to sign Kaepernick in terms of the 2017 season. The only reason that would make sense is if Gase felt he was a better QB than Tannehill for this team going forward. You don't just sign a guy off the street and expect him to come in and salvage a season. Especially a player that wasn't too good last time we saw him play.
Colin will be playing better in this offense because Collin can escape pressure. But you can't spit in the face of Cuban-Americans after crying you are oppressed two days prior. Sad because if he has not done that? I would hope we signed him tomorrow. His fault on this one.
The time to sign him was in the preseason. Now it's too late. He needs tailored offence and you cannot make those changes 1/4 into the season. Dolphins don't even have a bye week left. He could be a great QB in the right offence.
I didn't take into account what Fin-o is stating, don't know the real story there, but of course I wanted him..he would of instantly made us a real competitor with this defense..
Yea, this team doesn't have enough problems, hey lets sign a Castro supporter in Miami and see how the people of Miami react. Not to mention he started one of the biggest NFL flops of all time, as we now see the NFL market share dropping like the Dolphins O. No thanks, just plain ignorant to even think about it, besides, the guy isn't even a good back up....
I think Ross would be the one owner to cross that picket line- he was for the protests until the president said otherwise. Plus, Ross has been offering leadership and business classes to all players for a few years now because he wants them to have a career after football- I think that plays in Kaep's favor as well. He seems like one of the more level-headed billionaires out there. I'm not saying Kaepernick is the answer here- I just think he's worth a look since Cutler is really struggling.
I have no idea if Kaepernick would be an upgrade or not, but I would love to see the Dolphins sign him. He is definitely better than Cutler and signing him would be a big middle finger to Trump and Pence. I would love the signing for that reason, if nothing else.
So I take it that you feel like the entire NFL is giving you the middle finger while Trump laughs in your face because Kaep is unemployed?
I'm not so sure that Kaepernick would ask for $10M+ at this point...I would think the goal would be to get on any roster and show that he can positively impact a team. Because here's the thing- if you offered him the league minimum and he declined, that completely changes the narrative. Now you don't have an athlete standing up for oppression and getting punished for it, you have an elitist that is in it for the money and doesn't actually want to play. Someone low-balling Kaep would actually be the best thing for the league at this time...
Well that doesn't sound that bad. I assume he would say no, but if all we are doing is offering league minimum take it or leave it... then I wouldn't have a strong negative feeling towards the move.
From a football standpoint, Kaepernick would be the best option right now considering how bad our OL is. Even if you give him the ball and just let him improvise and play backyard football, you can bet it'll turn out to be much better than our current offense is. Obviously there are other things involved than just football, which is unfortunate, IMO.
A lot of Dolphins fans said they would not watch the NFL this season if Kaepernick was signed, seeing how a lot decided to complain and chose not to watch anyway in hindsight they should have signed Kap.
would it be to much trouble to explain the Castro thing..with context..could he of meant something different, could it of been misinterpreted by some..its hard for me to understand where he was coming from if it was so balantantly wrong as some say?? Fin-O??
I would wait another 2-3 games to see what Cutler has. If things pick up, carry on. If we see same ol' Jay out there, send him packing and bring in Kaep. Give Moore the start for a few weeks while Kaep gets somewhat up to speed and let him play the last 8ish games of the season. It will probably be too little, too late even if he excels, but it gives us the option of franchising if we aren't sold on Tannehill (and we shouldn't be) to act as a 1 year buffer for a rookie.
thank you..confirms it for me that he was NOT directly supporting Castro..words taken out of context..Not hard to see that, I'm surprised Fin-o you keep pushing that narrative.?
No way. Stopped watching pretty much most football because of the disrespect shown by the players. Used to watch Monday night football just to see what's going on. Not anymore. Used to watch other games before or after the Dolphin game. Not anymore. It pains me that Dolphins players are partaking in this "protest". They have their rights and their message. I have mine. And it's to send a message about how I don't like their blatent disrespect to the country. Low ratings. No sales. Lost revenue. Hopefully the cap goes DOWN and it hits them where it hurts. You can already see the NFL running for cover. JJ coming out and saying they don't play if they kneel. Wish Ross would do the same thing. I really hope they don't sign Kap as I would hate to stop watching the Dolphins.
He said it three times in that interview- he supports investing in education and national health care, but he does not endorse any of the oppressive stuff Castro did. Everything else is the media twisting words to get page clicks and honestly, it's disgusting.
AKA their EMPLOYERS. You see they are employees of the team. And it just isn't young black dudes playing. It is affecting ALL players. Just like if you have a job and you do something that makes the company look bad YOU GET FIRED. They are making the team look bad (according to many - I get you don't agree - but reality is reality) and as such it has consequences. It's costing viewers: The final numbers are in and the Chiefs’ 29-20 victory over the Washington Redskins snared 11.9 million viewers and a 4.3 rating among adults 18-49. Which means double-digit falls for MNF in both categories. MNF take a 13% hit from last week. Compared to the September 25 Dallas Cowboys vs. Arizona Cardinals game, last night’s MNF was down 16% in the key demo to match a season low. Viewership wise, the Chiefs’ win saw MNF take a 13% hit from last week. https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/monday-night-football-ratings-down-135118393.html
Ratings are meaningless, also funny since people on both "sides" are boycotting. Not to mention every other reason the NFL has for declining viewership like concussion scandals and cable cutting. NFL hit peak a few years ago, it's never getting back there unless they go full international. Nor would it even matter to begin with. Being in the majority or bludgeoning others into doing what you want them to doesn't put you in the right.
Yep meaningless. The owners don’t care about ratings. OK. What’s right depends on the glasses you’re wearing. You might feel it’s right but others feel it’s wrong. Who’s right? Who’s wrong? Just depends on how your view what’s happening. That being said this is a business and the minute the owners feel like it’s moving south, then it will be curtailed one way or another.
Some people here are seriously underestimating the lay off he's had. Dude hasn't played in a game since January and would need a minimum of 4-5 weeks to get up to speed physically/mentally. With the shape this offense is in, we'll most likely be well out of contention by then. It's a shame because we could've used someone with mobility to compensate for this atrocious o-line. I believe gase could've tailored an offense to suit kaep's strengths but opted for his guy. Hard to blame him.
Not for me. Coaches (not just Gase) go for 'comfort' and 'system' all the damn time. The best coaches get the best talent and adapt and look for mismatches. Look at everything BB does in New England, look at how Andy Reid uses Hill and Hunt this year. Gase wanted comfort and a system guy, and he got it.
Moore would definitely be a bolt of galvanizing lightning and for those like me who believe in that kind of stuff, if cutler doesn't get it in Atlanta and show improvement I make that move..if he plays better I'll stick with him..I just don't think you can keep dealing with the negative variables if it stays this historically bad for another week. Part of the reason why I wanted Kaepernik for this team is because, from our owner who is pro equal rights, amongst all the other programs he's leading, down to our players like Kenny and Mike thomas who are leaders in this community and the protest, the dynamics and closeness would of been off the charts, basically, I'm sure that the power of playing for this large of cause together would of taken their football execution to another level.. We could of handled that signing..and imo could of thrived.. We missed the opportunity to be in the forefront of the world on this subject, and simultaneanouly showing the world how one football team coming together is too much for the opponent to handle.. Gase and co. made a bad mistake jmo.
Are u kidding me? He wasn't "directly" supporting Castro a true oppressor of his people is good enough for you? Google how Armando and Kiko Alonso felt about it, then pretend you are from Cuba living in Miami and love your parents. I don't want to come off as frustrated at you. Because you missed this story, I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you just don't have the details.
Sounds like how many people feel about Donald Trump. He wore the shirt. He said he "can see where Castro was coming from" or some BS line that. The fact people support the cause he kneels for, then turn around and apologize for what he wore then what he said is baffling. Typical double standard to fit my opinion Bull jive. I like you Key, went to bat for you in club a few times. But you are off on this one.
