Let's Talk Backup Quarterbacks

David Fales.

 

Recap - Dolphins have 4 QB's on the books at present - RT17, Cutler, MM8 and Doughty.

Two of those QB's are injured.
One of them isn't seen as NFL ready yet.

Cutler was brought in to replace one injured QB and became the other injured QB. He was a retired veteran, of questionable ability, who had been away from the game, out of training, and was brought in because he had familiarity with the system, for £10 Mill. He has shown plenty of rust.

So now we're looking at...

Kaep - Another QB away from the game, out of football shape, of questionable ability, and we want to throw money at him? - Not in my book.

RG3 - As above but also an injury risk... Yeah, no.

Romo - More talented than Cutler but further along in his transition to broadcasting (and talent too, apparently). Same as both above but even MORE injury prone. Throw money at that? - Not a chance. And he wouldn't do it anyway.

Tebow - Out of football shape. Broadcasting. Questionable ability.... spotting a pattern yet?

Ponder - Anyone who would, clearly hasn't.



I say the Phins either roll as they are with enough QB's or they look for a genuinely talented backup who can stay with them after this year and can at least replace Moore as the backup if not compete for a starting spot. Not easy, but ideally you get someone who has promise and you see it as an investment at the QB spot. Proven potential for a draft pick spot and whatever else. So for that you have to scour the active backup QB's in the league and get someone you like, probably from a team that needs help at DL or WR where we have some talent.

That way you get a backup QB in a worst case scenario this year, and some future QB talent to try to develop, making the most of a bad situation.

 

Doughty. You've invested enough in him at this point to see what's there. You can however bring back FAles if he hasn't signed anywhere and keep Doughty on the PS though I suppose.

 

Roll with the players on the roster,to late to bring in someone and get them ready.

 

If Moore gets hurt, we are looking at finding a FOURTH starter/near-starter quality QB for this season. Most teams are done after one, two at most, QB injuries. I think Moore is can survive long enough to let Cutler heal, and Doughty can get us through a game or two if necessary. It is too late to worry about bringing in yet another QB -especially one that would need to learn the system.

 

I thought that Kaepernick should have been signed instead of Cutler when Tannehill went down.
At this point in the season though, I really don’t see Kaepernick or any of the other unsigned QBs being able to come in and be of much help, since they don’t know the offense and are not likely in shape to play an NFL game.

So they should just stick with Moore and Doughty and hopefully QB will be a priority in the next draft.

 

just keep Doughty or bring in Fales, at least they know the system.

 

I’d rather we sign vanilla ice as our QB than Kaepernick. This child just needs to go away!!

 

I would stick with Doughty. This situation is perfect to do just that. If Gase insists on going back to Cutler we are talking 3-4 games that he will miss. No point in bringing in someone new for that. Cutler will be back.

It also shows Doughty you believe in him which helps with confidence.

Doughty knows the plays and knows the system. While he has not been super amazing in pre season, he has also never ran with the 1's to see what he can really do.

 

Was Cutler signed for 10 million pounds? Because that would be even worse than ten million dollars...

 

Don't want to take the wind out of your sails but, Ian Rapporport is reporting that David Fales flew into Miami last night, to meet with the team. Seems like the obvious way to go for a few games. Played well in the pre season and is very familiar with the system.

 

What TJ Yates isn't available this year?

Take out politics, take out personality. Is this person the most capable of winning games if Matt Moore got hurt? If the answer is yes, that's who they should sign.

 

Yep. Outperformed doughty immeasurably in pre season and as cheap and available as a hooker at a cop convention.

 

Cutler can play after baltimore. It's ribs. Get the flak jacket and put him in if we need him. Dougjty for Baltimore is fine

 

Have you ever had cracked ribs? Even breathing hurts, throwing a football and getting hit will have him doubling down in pain.

 

he has been sitting on his couch for 2 months. Not logical to sign in. He has no more experience then Doughty does. And why are you keeping Doughty exactly if you don't give him a shot.

 

Kapernick is just not that good. And certainly not worth the headaches for an NFL team. And for sure not the Dolphins. Why not root of Robert Griffin 3, he is just as capable as Kapernick without the headaches.?

 

Fales probably would have been chosen over Doughty for the PS if he was eligible(He was not). I think they see Fales as NFL back up ready (actual NFL game exp)while Doughty is not there yet.

 

pro football players used to just wear a flak jacket and get shot up with pain killer when they had busted ribs. For a qb just throw the ball away when they get close and make sure the game plan is heavy on the running

 

because the dynamics of that franchise shifted, they wanted out of Harbaugh, and they changed the offense that made him successful and tried to change him as a qb..

I wanted him over Cutler because I thought the dynamics would work here and our excellent owner could handle it..but its too late now.

A smart and nuanced answer with an actual understanding of the situation and dynamics! Nicely put Deej. I disagree about it being too late though. It may well be, but only one way to really find out. He would not start week 1 of a return to be sure. But we could spin him up for the final 8ish and maybe a playoff run. A playoff run with a playoff experienced QB.

 

Oh man dont get me wrong, that dudes skill set with our defense and skill players in Ajayi, shoot that double read option threat with him and Ajayi would destroy defenses, I’d be talking deep playoff run..I’d be all in but I don’t think they are progressive enough to want it

I’m a huge Bruce arians fan but I’m on the record in the offseason saying I thought something was up with him and that I thought his team would struggle this year and that this would be his last year...you have to be totally committed in this sport, if not you will be exposed

 

Lol you named two HOFers, a burgeoning young franchise qb, and a guy who I'm not sure has done anything close to the magnitude Kaep has.

And seriously, dude may not be a HoF player, but cut the no talent arguments, they are bull****.

 

No more throwing resources into Qb's that are not on rosters for a reason. We need to go with what we have. I would like to see us draft a QB fairly high if we see one that fits. For this year, we have Moore for now and Cutler later if needed, which is likely due to Moore's injury history. If Doughty cannot even step in and play to bridge the gap if Moore gets hurt before Cutler can play again then why is he taking up a spot? I'm not saying he needs to carry the team or even win, but can he call a play in the huddle, perform a snap count and hand the ball off and throw the odd pass to our team? If not he has been here too long.

 

No having talent doesn’t make it ok but talent is what makes teams overlook things.....If he were talented enough he would already be signed like all those other guys.....the fact that he isn’t shows you that teams dont think he is talented enough to warrant the distraction....same thing happened with TO once his talent level slipped and the same thing with ocho cinco and randy moss....those guys are perfect examples. Teams dealt with it when they were great but once they started to slip no one would touch them. He has talent just not enough to make it worth it.

 

That show has become unlistenable.

 

Why do you think? 2+2 and all. What else might possibly make him the one person in the entire history of the NFL to not get another shot (excepting a career ending injury/drug problem)? Is there aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaany other reason that maybe he didn't get picked up?
