According to Armando and Adam Schefter, Maxwell released! UPDATED: Looks Like QB David Fales will be signed to take his roster spot
Wow. Did not expect that but, he's been hurt and when he was on the field he was not playing well anyway.
Tankersley has been serviceable. Had no Safety help for that one TD he gave up Sunday. He also saved the game against the Falcons.
Not a smart move in my opinion, either howard or tank could get hurt at any moment and max is the next best outside corner we had. Plus we are taking a big cap hit I'm dead money by releasing him.
The money was already guaranteed for this year (still owe him 5 mill). Zero impact cap wise next year with dead money as I understand it. From PFT: The fact that the move came a week before the trade deadline means he’ll instantly become a free agent. And the termination pay provision of the labor deal means he’ll be able to collect the balance of his $8.5 million base salary as termination pay, and then to sign with another team and keep whatever he makes there. Maxwell initially signed a six-year, $63 million deal with the Eagles in free agency two years ago. After one year in Philly, the Eagles traded Maxwell to the Dolphins. Maxwell has played in only two games this year, missing each of the last four. He was benched not only for playing poorly but also for not executing the assignments given to him.
It was inevitable. We have no dime package. Tank beat him out sooner than later. Lippett might have done it in the preseason. Verner is out to prove something,I think he's catching on. Also keep in mind we get our starting safety TJ McDonald back week 10
Not a fan of this move. We need depth in the secondary and he was already paid for. He had the potential to come on the field fresh in the 2nd half of the season and give us some solid play.
I saw this as the obvious move based on the our inactive list. The question I had was whether or not we could afford it salary cap wise. I believe it hurts our cap for next season. But as a player, it was a no-brainer. He's a bad fit for our scheme. He was bad for most of last season until they tweaked things to account for his limitations. He then had a four game stretch where he played well before getting hurt again. He's currently hurt and has an injury history. They're always minor but always seem to linger. He wasn't in our future plans and I expect that even if healthy that we would have activated McTyre (sp?) ahead of him. We do lose a veteran presence (he was good at knocking out the ball when he came in late), but is a liability in coverage.
Looks like no dead money hit next year and a cap savings of $10,000,000 according to this site: https://overthecap.com/player/byron-maxwell/1535/
Yes, but we would have gotten the same savings if we released him at the end of this season. His salary for this season was already mostly guaranteed now he is off the roster and we still have to pay him this year's salary. We should have kept him for depth and released him at the end of the year.
That's not the only reason. He is also the third best outside cb on the team and would provide depth in case either howard or tank gets injured. Howard is actually banged up right now he could go down at any moment and we have no one as good as Maxwell to back him up.
He doesn't provide depth if he cannot play the scheme Miami is implementing. The guy isn't doing what he is told to do.
He had the same problem last year, in the beginning he was struggling then he picked it up and was one of the highest rated corners in the league towards the end of the season. He has already shown that he can correct his mistakes. I don't think they should have given up on him so easily especially if he is already paid for this year and we have nobody better to backup the starters.
As you said, he had the same problem last year. They did not give up on him easily. I am fine with him being cut. He wasn't doing his job and has been a healthy scratch. I do not know if he is the third best outside corner on this team right now. If he isn't going to play the coverage, what is the point of having him?
I'm not sure if Maxwell would play regardless. Who knows whether he's injured or not or would just claim he was. There was some speculation that his extended injury time off last season was him milking it. And I doubt the team shares your opinion that he's our third best boundary CB. I know I certainly don't. I would have McTyre above him and Verner about even with him even though he's not a good boundary CB (neither is Maxwell at this point). Heck, I'd even be fine with bringing Pitts back. I was guessing that we might drop Maxwell when McDonald came back in two weeks anyways.
What speculation? I never heard anything about him faking injury. Mctyer is an undrafted rookie with no starting experience, verner is not a better boundary corner than Maxwell, he us smaller and slower than Maxwell and doesn't have as much starting experience. I liked Pitts, but he is currently signed with the jaguars so good luck with that. Fact is we now have zero depth at cb with this move.
Well I looked it up he was just released today by the jags. Even so if the jags don't want him and he has no starting experience you think he is better than Maxwell? This move to me looks like something personal. The coaches put max in the doghouse and didn't like how he reacted so they release him. It does not make football sense. It is a waste of money and talent that we needed as insurance at cb for this year. I just hope neither tank or howard get injured this year or else we are ****ed.
With how Maxwell was playing so far this year, we were ****ed with him. Now we will see if one of the young pups can bite.
He wasn't playing well, but it's not like he was getting burned left and right, he actually had a better rating than howard up until his last game and he made some big plays and created turnovers. I think this is a major overreaction on the coaches part. Makes no football sense at all unless his injury is worse than reported.
Whats done is done good riddance to Gumby. On the bright side.. I hope this lights a fire with the rest of the DBs and they start playing like the O-line did last year after they released Thomas and that other dumbass.
Wasn't DRC just released by the Giants? Maybe bring him in for a look to replace? Would have been interesting to do a malcontent trade to maybe get something out of Maxwell, but oh well. If the reports of him freelancing and refusing to follow the playcall and scheme were true, you can't play that out on the field.
While Maxwell has the talent to turn things around, I believe this is another message to the players, that your salary/reputation doesn’t guarantee you a roster spot. It’s about getting the other players to level up their games. Basically with Howard, Tankersly and Lippett showing signs of being a group of good young corners Maxwell made himself expendable by freelancing, rather than being the savvy veteran mentor.
