Miami is not in the best cap position in the NFL in 2018. I've seen one website where we have $16M available. But I've heard it was less. I think everyone agrees that Miami is starving for talent, both younger and cheaper. I think some of you agree that in 2018 we have opportunities to shed salaries, however, to gain nothing in return would put us in a precarious position. So my question is, should Miami start to plant the seeds with teams like Cleveland, SF and Indy, to trade some players for draft picks, once those teams can absorb the salaries and for those teams to be competitive, they probably need to spend some money, instead of just depending on the draft? In addition, these teams may not attract free agents, so a trade would be a way of acquiring players.

My thinking is Miami has a ton of salary on players that for years haven't transcended this team. Getting picks would not only provide depth and get us younger, but also not leave the team so void that they are forced to again bring in free agents and continue this mediocre run. In other words, why cut players to sign more free agents? Miami needs to stop using free agency as a way of building their team. Another angle is Miami stockpiling picks to move up in the draft. So if you are Clev or SF, you absorb some salary by trading for Miami's veterans. Well, Clev and SF (for example) has very high picks in the draft, that could be attractive to Miami. Maybe Miami can utilize these picks to move up, essentially giving those picks back to those teams. It isn't an exact science, but I think you get what I am saying: shed salaries for picks and move up in the draft with those picks.

I'm sure a lot of you will complain (I know one in particular), however, it is insane to keep thinking that the same players, after 5-10 years, will finally all put it together. It is time to move on from players

sure if you can find suckers. i’m up for trading anyone at this point even ryan. teams with top 5 draft picks are going to need QB’s and this year there are a few good ones so it might be costly.

older veteran players should be cut trades as we have no shot at a super bowl so give them a change to win something elsewhere.

I've read some pretty knowledgeable posters showing likely scenarios where the Dolphins cut or trade a number of current players and our cap space should go from that $16 mil range to a ~$45 mil range.

What is your solution? Keep gase and bring back tannehill. More of the same. I provide solutions for the phins misery. You bring more misery. Clearly you have no solutions for a team in dire need of one

You provide solutions? Ok. Trade players.. Who? And to what team? For what pick? Who are we then trading said pick to and to move up to what spot and for what player?

This is the solution a child would give.

We aren't in a position that we can cut off avenues to get better. We need FAs and solid drafts, to get us to a solid roster. Once we have a solid roster, then you can try to build a homegrown product almost entirely through the draft like Green Bay tries to do. Plus, if the players you are talking about trading are below avg, but have above avg pay, who is going to trade for them?

In my opinion, if you have guys on your team that the contract you gave them, makes them unmovable in a trade, then it was a bad contract. I see a a lot of bad contracts on this Dolphins team. They need to get better at this.

The team is starving for a solid offensive line and a superstar either on offense or defense. That superstar player will only be found in the draft. Do we need a quarterback? I think we do at this point. Tannehill is solid, but a captivating superstar at that position would nullify a lot of other weaknesses we have on both sides of the ball.

trading players with big contracts tough, almost impossible.

If I'am the Gm of course I'm always planting seeds to see what suckers are out there..

for certain players on our team I would approach them about a restructure..

but seriously, all the players are available for the right place as you know.

I would trade anyone on the o-line for the proper draft pick..

I wouldn't draft our two running backs..

    I would trade Branch..

I wouldn't trade any secondary players.

    I would trade Parker for a 2nd.

I wouldn't trade Suh or Wake or Phillips.

Parker wouldn't get you a 2nd...Landry could on a tag and trade. Phillips has very little trade value, same with Branch, good luck finding anyone to take on that contract.

I bet could get at least a 4th for Ajayi. I hear he has been disgruntled and not really doing what the coaches ask anyway!

I think when your dealing with a young player like Parker there are plenty of gms that may of had a high grade on the player and just think they are being misused, and would of spent a first rounder on the player if it were them back then, and see a 2nd rounder with hi level talent not a bad deal because of their college eval..

I wouldn't trade Phillips, branch I agree, no-one is gonna touch that.

    I wouldn't trade Landry.

We'd be lucky to get a 4th for Parker.

And I'd take it, to be honest.

Imo we have no assets worth trading for. At least not ones we'd get rid of. Landry, tannehill, Tunsil, Harris, Parker, Jones, Tankersley, and Howard. Most of those are guys I can't see us cutting loose.

nobody on this team should be untouchable. We need more picks right now, losing a 4th to move up 4 spots for Howard, a 3rd and 4th for Carroo, these are examples of draft mismanagement, I think we should trade either Parker or Landry, whichever one nets us a higher pick, which would be Landry.

I'm not saying anyone's "untouchable", but we're not in fire sale mode. A great offer comes along, great. I Don't see how.

Based on what we've seen this season, we can't let Landry go and stay with Parker

If you want to "provide solutions", then do more than post that we should reduce our salary cap and trade players.
What you're ignoring are the examples of teams turning it around with one good draft. The most recent example is ATL. They went from a crap team, nailed a draft with their defensive picks and went to the superbowl last year. And while our team hasn't nailed a draft, the idea that we can trade good players for draft picks and come out shiny is just wrong. It's the person making the draft picks. Giving them more picks is unlikely to make that jump we're looking for.

I don't need to see the posts. Philly and LA already had very good defenses, they drafted the right QB and jumped to the next level. And furthermore, Philly is now playing with 2 FA WRs with good size contracts, along with trading for Ajayi.

I don’t agree that philly was a fast rebuild, they have been building that team and making good moves for three years..

The draft..keeping their own especially, key free event signings.

I know I’ve been keeping an eye in their personnel moves for those three years and have been thinking over that time, damn, I like what their doing.

I guess I don't understand the "Branch's contract is huge" mantra. He's the 21st highest paid DE in the league. He's not an all-pro, but he's average and his contract is average money for his position. There are 2 rookies making more money than him...Like I said, I don't get it.

Branch has a $12M hit next year. Don't look at it as 21st, look at it based on this team, his production, and what we could actually do w that money

For this to work from a team cap perspective , Harris needs to be the starter and we need to find a more inexpensive backup..

To be the devils advocate here, Philly and La both had bottom tier defenses in 2014 and 2015 only last year they got better and this year. The key to Philly is they drafted a qb and that qb balled out last year and created an atmosphere where people want to join the team since they showed great potential. LA got rid of the cancer fisher and stacked the D and drafted a qb and now they have a young team that looks like a team to compete for the NFC west title for the next few years. It sucks that wentz may be done this year, but no FA is going to want to come to Miami and that's where we are losing. The eagles went with a win now mantra and Miami stays on the win in 5 year mantra and it never changes.

Everyone strikes out in the draft, the FA signing are key and we seem to sign guys off names and not productions besides SUH that is, I think the guy got a bad wrap here the guy is doubled teamed every play and I think hes played like 98% of snaps and still competing.

but mike Wallace, julie Thomas, maxwell and a huge list of others are all bad signings based off previous productions and they never pan out here. and that could be coaching or just overpaid players who knows.

You can say you can trade Landry all you want but I don't see that guy signing back with Miami and its going to suck. He does have an option to not sign and trade right? if that's the case I seriously doubt he agrees to that and just picks his team on his own if he has that choice. Just my opinion

what posters don't realize, is when you get the qb, you may have the same deficiencies, but they are masked. Let's see what happens in Phily now that Wentz is gone. Foles played well in relief, but so does Matt Moore. League has a week to prepare for him now. Brady, well he plays with 2nd and 3rd string linemen. But his surveillance of the field is so good, he helps put himself (and the linemen) in a good spot for him to throw his passes.

As far as average millions per year he's 17th, but among 4-3 DE's he's 11th, and next year his cap hit will rank 14th. He should've never big given this deal without an out after 1 year, Branch is below average in my opinion, but average or not, that same money we gave him could've been used to sign a pretty good player at another position, like at guard with Ronald Leary and Larry Warford. It's just another example of bad allocation of resources, which has been a staple of this franchise for so long.

Yes qb's mask a lot, the amount of time an offense can stay on the field is directly correlated to how well or bad a defense plays, we see it a lot IMO our defense has played well for the amount of 3 and outs and time they have been on the field. That's why every team is always searching for a qb until you find the one, except for the select few in Dilfer etc. obviously defensive additions help, I mean why didn't Miami look at chris long instead of Mario Williams? he wouldn't have came but did we even try? the guy is far better than Williams but he went to philly. did we not have enough money for him or what? hes a young proven guy Mario was proven to be injured and not succeed on the field. just wondering that is all FO decisions.

I honestly think foles is legit, he was put in a crappy spot dealing with fisher and chip Kelly, this offense is better suited for both them guys pedersons team is playing so well because everyone has bought in, the question is has all of Miami bought in? at times I think so then at times I see it not so.

it's funny, they don't invest in the O line (from the outside), but they invest in the dline (from the outside). I am at least happy they had a draft with Harris (even though he looks like a bust), God, and Taylor. We need the football Gods to bless us with these guys and have them play at a high level with low contracts

Anyone on this team that can draw a first round pick or very early second, should be traded. And i mean anyone. this team needs to be nuked.

Suh’s contrsct is untradeable, we need him to restructure. So we are stuck with him but we need to rework those numbers with his agent.

restructure kicks the can down the road and I believe we did this already and that's why his dead cap hit is $22M next year and $15M the following. The savings is $4M in 2018, but that's a lot to pay ($22M) to make him go away and save $4M. The next year 2019, is a little better - you save $15M and pay $13M.

God that is such a bad deal lol

Which puts him at a $7.5 mil 2 year average. That puts him at about 23rd-24th highest paid. And if he doesn't improve then he can be cut and they'd suffer only a $2 million in dead money.

Over the last 2 seasons his cap hit has averaged $4 million. That ranks him at about 35th. If you add in next season and look at the 3 year total he's averaged $6 million or about 31st.

    His contract is not bad.
