Forget Roquan Smith, if we go linebacker in the first Tremaine should be our guy. He can do it all. Would be perfect at Sam next to McMillan.

Good Lord, he was beastly on that first play! Good hands, good motor...looks like a stud. Where's he projected to go in the draft?

Looks great on film. Not sure this team would pick him that high IMHO I have a feeling they are going to go free agent with the Mike position. He does look like a great prospect.

He is a stud, but "forgetting" about Ro Smith would be a huge mistake. Smith isn't as big as Edmunds, but I don't really see Edmunds doing anything better than Smith and Smith is more polished at this point.

Be careful of this dudes videos, he’ll show five plays and rewind it 20 times, and talk for twenty mins..

I’ve watched a lot of his reps now, and you need to do that to get a full repertoire of his strengths and weaknesses, and while he’s got the measurables we all want, size/speed ratio, imo his diagnosing skills at the linebacker position are below average, his vision, awareness and instincts, that whole package is subpar..he’s only 20 but I just can’t take that risk on athletic ability if the instincts and ability to diagnos isn’t there, nfl coordinators and qbs will make him look silly..

so, he'll for sure be the pick is basically what i'm hearing. sounds like he fits the LB'er mold of this team.

I think it’s time we prioritize a few things over athletic ability..

    Instincts...intellect...work ethic..leadership...

I would pass on Edmunds and take Shaquem Griffin later..

Ro Smith is highly overrated imo. He is undersized and he can't get off blocks. Once a blocker gets their hands on him 8 times out of ten he is pushed back and taken out of the play. Edmunds on the other hand is a lot better than Smith at beating blocks. He is big enough to take on lineman and atheltic enough to run with and cover scat backs and tightends. We have been undersized at the linebacker position for as long as I can rmember which is one of the reasons we have struggled so much. Especially for the wide nine defense we run we need big linebackers like Edmunds who can do it all.

I think you are being too hard in your assessment. He misdiagnoses a few plays here and there, but it's not a constant or big issue in his overall game. He is generally doing things right and making plays. His production speaks for itself and his diagnosis skills will only get better with more coaching and experience. His cieling is the highest of any linebacker in this draft and he can be a day one starter at Sam for us imho.

I want to like every prospect, I do not feel like I'm being hard on him, and its mos def not a rarity to see him completely lost on plays, it happens often enough where he scares the hell out of me..but more power to ya Hitman,if he's your guy at 11 ok, I hope your right.

He's 19. You do what you want with him as a prospect. He can be moulded into a SLB very easily. Watch the tape and he diagnoses well, he's an athletic marvel, he can cover tight ends and you can watch him redirect and run with slot receivers. Very few linebacker prospects have EVER looked like this coming out. He's Planet Theory at LB.

Idk why I’ve seen Minkah mocked to us. He will likely be gone by then. I’m banking they do edge/de again and pick Marcus Davenport.

There was a recent article in SI about Saban and Bill, they both have a set measurable size at every position and don't stray from it. Was rather interesting.

We're going more to hybrid nickel and dime packages supposedly with mcdaniel taking the wlb spot. If thats the case we may still be in the markwt for a fs but yeah He's probably gone unless there is a massive run on qbs

I don't believe in this hybrid nickel and dime crap. It's the biggest load of hoarse **** I have heard in a while. It's hard enough making the stupid wide 9 work, don't need to complicate things even more, especially with an inexperienced coach like Burke as DC. Gase needs to stop with the exotic defense experiments and just draft good players to play traditional 4-3. The 4-3 alignments is fine for covering tight ends if you have the right players and coaching for it. You don't see anybody else coming up with this hybrid nonsense theory in order to cover tight ends.

Draft Tremaine Edmunds and put him at SLB. He has the size and athleticsm to match up with and cover any tight end. Not that complicated really, we just have gone to long with undersized and not very athletic linebackers. That is why we can't cover tight ends, not our lack of some hybrid alignment.

“Shaquem has more career INTs, PDs, FR, FF, and TDs than a lot of the top LB prospects in this draft. And he did that in basically only 2 years.

    Shaquem Griffin - 3 INTs - 16 PD - 5 FR - 4 FF - 1 TD

    Roquan Smith: 0 INTs - 3 PD - 3 FR - 3 FF - 0 TDs
    Harold Landry: 0 INTs - 6 PD - 1 FR - 10 FF - 0 TDs
    Tremaine Edmunds: 1 INT - 5 PD - 1 FR - 3 FF - 0 TDs
    Dorance Armstrong Jr.: 0 INTs - 8 PD - 3 FR - 6 FF - 0 TDs
    James Hearns: 0 INTs - 5 PD - 2 FR - 9 FF - 0 TDs
    Jerome Baker: 0 INTs - 4 PD - 3 FR - 1 FF - 1 TD
    Jeff Holland: 0 INTs - 1 PD - 2 FR - 5 FF - 0 TDs
    Lorenzo Carter: 0 INTs - 1 PD - 6 FR - 6 FF - 1 TD
    Kendall Joseph: 2 INTs - 1 PD - 1 FR - 3 FF - 0 TDs
    Rashaan Evans: 0 INTs - 5 PD - 2 FR - 2 FF - 0 TDs
    Oren Burks: 5 INTs - 21 PD - 2 FR - 1 FF - 2 TDs
    Malik Jefferson: 0 INTs - 5 PD - 1 FR - 2 FF - 1 TD
    Leighton Vander Esch: 3 INTs - 6 PD - 1 FR - 4 FF - 0 TDs

He also had more sacks than all but 1 of them (Landry). He is undersized to play a pure DE/pass rusher role... but in the NFL he is well suited to play WLB where he run, chase, and hit. He's an aggressive and versatile defender that is a fantastic blitzer and great in coverage.”

Let that sink in for those who think he’s a 6th round backup

I like shaquem, but I feel that Edmunds has more upside. If de go LB in the first Edmunds would be my pick, but if we go another position in the 1st then I wouldn't mind getting shaquem in the 2nd or 3rd.

Only part of his game I don't like is that he is a little undersized and he misses tackles too often.

Wanna bet he doesn' get drafted the first two days. This reminds me of the gay defensive linemen. People fell over themselves to say we should draft him, as high as 2nd round lol, how he had the goods to be a good defensive lineman. All they really wanted was to be patted on the head and told what good people they were. This is slightly different in that he has some talent but not enough to be a starter imo. I think the hand is too important a tool. 3rd day draft pick, most likely 5th or 6th....at best 4th

Edmunds has astonishing upside. Griffin is a great story and a nice player but they're not in the same class. Griffin is a 220lb Jabrill Peppers clone. Can he consistently take on guards in the run game? You can't really scheme against a guy who can't do that. I suspect he's best suited as a guy in a 34 front where he can play some big nickel, where he can be lined up as a defensive end who can rush off the edge and essentially play somewhere between an edge rusher and an overhang guy.

We don't really play a WLB in a conventional system. We almost play a left linebacker and a right linebacker. McMillan will play either the mike or the SLB. Bobby McCain, who's one of the best nickels in the game, is on the field so much that we don't actually play three linebackers conventionally very often.

    And the slot?

Doesn't matter what you believe in or what you think you may or may not see. This "hybrid nonsense" (aka decades old strategies, formations and personnel use) is about being able to matchup with today's offense's; plain and simple. And that means finding defenders than can cover modern TE's and offense's extended usage of the slot and other system's.

A base 4-3 is fine for roughly 25-35% of today's NFL defensive snap counts. The majority, by and large, is played in hybrid pass packages of Nickel and Dime personnel. Roughly 65% of all defensive calls are done out these packages.

I was talking about the need for hybrid safety/linebacker which is what has been suggested with TJ McDonald as the hybrid and a third free safety playing center field. Instead of a hybrid safety/linebacker let's just get ourselves a couple of athletic linebackers that can cover tightends for once.

Agree. Maybe even one that plays the run like a LB, yet can cover like a safety. A hybrid player that could fit both positions would be ideal, especially since we predominately play in passing packages.

No doubt, no one is saying Shaquem is a 1st rounder, like Edmunds is. He will be at least a solid player because of his heart and work ethic, along with him being a good talent. If we take him, we need to have taken someone else earlier on in the draft as well, if we didn’t shore up in FA. Shaquem alone will not making our LB core great, having both would be epic though.

Just looked, we haven’t taken a LB in the first round since Marco Coleman in 1992, if you don’t count Dion Jordan who was “technically” a DE.

I worry other teams can see his potential and understand he’s only 19, we may have to move up two spots to insure he’s still available. Oakland is prob salivating at the idea of picking him.

Roquan is going to be a solid player and may be more nfl ready off the bat but 2-3 years down the road, teams will regret passing on this kid if they do. Monster.

True. Nowadays some variation of the nickel is the defacto base defense for a lot of teams....over 50 percent. What I was getting at is I heard we want to increase the amount of time we are in it. I don't know the numbers but if we are in it 60% of the time the goal may be to up that to 70% of the time. Of course that would mean we are in the market for a FS. If we get a good one in FA or the draft we know that' the plan

The only game I fully broke down and charted defensively for the Dolphins (because honest truth they bored the **** out of me so I studied other defenses over the course of the season) was week 1 vs the Chargers. In that game we ran 58 defensive plays, 12 were out of 4-3 personnel, 3 were out of 6-3 (goalline), and 43 were out of 4-2. That's a whopping 74% out of Nickel.

I really truly hope we are in the market for a true FS. It would allow us to utilize both Jones and McDonald to their strengths as SS, while also letting us play aggressively with our CBs and blitz packages because we would have range in the MOF. And well-rounded OLB, like Edmunds, would be an absolute fantastic add as well.
