Yes we do, but with the brand new expensive contracts we gave McDonald and Jones one of them is going to have to assume that role. We cant be starting three safeties at the same time or benching one while paying him starter money. You can thank tbaum for the f'd up situation as usual.

Here's hoping to Tannenbaum hetting a swift.punt out.of Miami. I also think Gase should get the chance to do it his way and have the time and support. I also think he is young and inexperienced. It would not be A badd idea to bring in somebody Like Wade Phillips to work on the defensive side of the ball while Gase works on the offensive side of the ball. it would speed up the process. Been done before and been successful -member the bears 1985

Absolutely can. And it's the preferred set up for many 4-2-5 defenses.

You would play your Free at single high MOF, who is the traditional prototype that can make the coverage calls, get everyone lined up, and can rob coverage.

The Whip (SS/LB hybrid) plays the field/strong side, who can cover the TE, blitz, and be screwed down for the 8th presence in the box vs the run.

The Rover plays the boundary/weak side, who is more of a true pass defender and can also play the hash.

VT's DC Bud Foster, among many others, are very well known for such personnel packages, and are very successful with it. You can give a 4-3 look, Robber concepts with an 8 man front, Covers 1/2/3, Quarters, etc. It gives you the ability to show multiple looks, coverage shells, and run every coverage needed on the back end.

    yep

problem is in derwin james case probably the worst skill he has is single high deep middle. he's a better option than reshad or tj there but still it's not a big plus. derwin can man up slots win physically vs them at the los and carry coverage plus play some hybrid box and gap fill assignment work. didn't love that he came in 6 foot a 3/4 and not the listed 6 foot 3 that might help us see him at 11 especially when I see him as a primary carry coverage option vs tight ends to offset our lack of it at lb but he jumped out the gym and his length is fantastic to offset.

add derwin james I think it makes bobby McCain more a package slot corner...dime type which is fine by me...I think he should be a spot run guy anyways...too much separation out of cuts

james opens up a world of possibilities for Miami as you have eluded too but im just not sure he's the pure free safety centerfield type in fact I'd say with confidence he's not. in terms of best bang for your buck

I don't see minkah as a primary coverage carry option vs tight ends...don't think he's physical enough to reroute games got a lot of corner to it and he jumped 33 inches at 6 foot and change good player terrific football iq and intangibles and natural leader but plays a ton of slot corner on bama tape.

both these guys would give us a ton of versatility but for me due to the carry coverage vs tight ends which has killed us derwin james trumps

James is better as a single high deep than youre giving him credit for. He was pretty new to that role this year however did it very well. He would only get better as he continues to see the game from that perspective.

Also he didn't measure in at 6 foot and "some change". He measured 6'1 and 6/8. So pretty much 6'2.

    I left out the 1 after I put the 6 foot...I meant 6 foot 1 and 3/4

Are you willing to sacrifice run defending prowess in that free safety you want?

that's the thing. the scheme ask for a lot of gap fill with the safeties probably why they prefer the interchangeable type frankly

have to be sure tacklers. that's why unless we add something for package run only like a cheap option or later in the draft to be the centerfield type I don't really see the value. I do think Fitzpatrick could do it though. he's got a lot of versatility.

I agree, neither jamew nor minkah are good center field type safeties, what they are good at we already have people for.

There is no true free safety in this draft that is projected to go in the first couple of rounds so for me safety is not a priority and we should not be targeting either minkah or james. LB, TE, OL and backup QB and DT are our biggest needs.

  10. We will have to disagree then, which is fine. I think it is egregiously hyperbolic and intellectually dishonest to suggest that safety is the "least of our concerns." I think safety is a significantly greater need than a number of positions on the team as it stands. I think a more measured, and cogent outlook would suggest that "safety is a need but not our greatest need." And that I would agree on. Also, if one subscribes to drafting the BPA, sitting at 11 the Dolphins may very well be able to grab one of the two best safeties in the draft - the FSU or Alabama kid. I am not arguing they should or they will as none of us know the strategic decision-making calculus (or arithmetic in our case I fear) currently being carried out in our FO, but in my opinion safety, especially a rangy, fast, savage FS is most definitely a need, if not the greatest need. In the spirit of the OPs question, then yes I would levy that OL, TE, LB are greater needs....but if taking a game-theory approach to understanding the conflict and cooperation of NFL draft rational-acting decision-makers, both internally and externally to our FO, as well as the strategic parameters that define this NFL draft "game" I believe safety would be a viable choice. I hold this belief despite the way this FO has muddled the safety position for years and the current contract situation at the position. So, in conclusion, that is why I included safety on our list of needs; however, since our thesis assumptions on safety "being the least of our concerns right now" in your case and safety being "a clear need" in my case, we are discordant and it will likely be a ponderous task to find an adequate bargaining space from which we can agree.

need to watch the Jessie bates kid from wake forest see if he's the rangy centerfield type...200 lbs he's kinda light and I heard his tackling is suspect

if it's bpa derwin james is gonna be up there...no doubt about it

I've heard that miami was in the tom Johnson of Minnesota dt market...that makes a decent bridge the gap option to godchaux for the long term...games are somewhat similar...Johnson is an oxe...he's gonna be 34 this year though so 2 year deal max. and likely with tbaum highly if not fully guaranteed type...bet he cost in this market $8 mil per

I'm not highly knowledgeable about the all the possible FS prospects, but I'd speculate someone like Jesse Bates, Marcus Allen, or Armani Watts are intriguing day 3 options to fill such a spot.

I wouldn't need a box checked for a run support FS, but I'd never compromise on tackling. That trait alone would suffice.

Feels like Gase is trying to protect Tan with O Line and weapons so I expect we'll go defence early in the draft and then pick up a backup QB in the mid rounds.

The first pick will assuredly be the best LB, DT, or S on the board. Dark horse being Denzel Ward. Mayfield, maybe? I don't know with the Tannehill restructure if they're realistically expecting Mayfield to make it to their pick.

If we go Tremaine Edmunds we'll have an insanely young linebacking corps and I mean that in the best way possible. I think Raekwon had just turned 20 around this time last year. I really hope the ACL injury doesn't affect him.

I looked at him pretty hard Hoops...His body and frame is frail and completely lacks any power within that body and frame, these weaknesses really show itself on tape whenever he’s playing the run..

    It’s not a willing thing I’m questioning, not a heart thing..just a body\frame/strength/concern for durability thing.

    Liability..

I saw one mock draft recently where the top 10 basically go crazy and we ended up with minkah fitzpatrick falling to us. I love the insanity of mock draft season.

All this talk about “gap fill”, and being to light or not tall enough...........great

Can anyone tell me exactly what type of defense do they play and
    What coverages do they run?
    How is the defense called?
What is the philosophy of the defense?
    Is this philosophy acheivable?
What kind of depth do they have on the line?
Do they run a lot of stunts?
What kind of consistent pressure do they get?
Do they play a lot of dime and nickel coverages?
Are whole sale changes needed between 1rst and 3rd?
How many of the linemen are 4
    Down linemen?
How many of the linebackers are 4 down linebackers?
How about safeties and corners - are they 4 down?

I am trying to illustrate a point I want
To make about personal, telegraphing and depth. I ask because I am not as knowledgeable about some of the answers as some. With that being said and some back and forth I think this exercise will lead to a clear understanding of where this side of the ball actually is.

I believe most will be surprised at how far away from consistent top 5 play this side of the ball is. Once these and other questions are answered we could also estimate how long it will take to get our Killer B’s back.

    Thanks to all in advance

lets say hypothetically baker and rosen both go top 10 how does this place feel about Rudolph at 42?

I have a feeling that's the wheelhouse he comes off in early round 2. can't stand the offense he comes from and I think lamar Jackson is gone prior

The plan is for McDonald to be playing more of a hybrid LB role, which means that we need a safety (Aikens?). So I think we will be starting three safeties after all.
