I wouldn't be disappointed with Vea. He's a phenomenal player at a position of need. However, I think a DB (James) would be a better pick.

Agreed. I believe in BPA to a large extent, but you have to put in consideration the depth at each position in the draft.

There’s likely to be some good DT’s round 2 and later like Settle, McIntosh, Phillips, Hill etc.

I think the phins get better value going with a LB or DB with their first pick.

Lol, with Vea when Derwin and Roquan are still available.

Leighton Ders will not be in the first, imo. Otherwise, completely plausible. Good Mock!

They never pick who you would expect or think they should. They just lost Suh, sounds like something they would do for sure. Again, I don’t think they should, I would pick Edmunds, FitzPatrick, Roquan, & Derwin before Vea.

They lost Suh but are three deep at the position right now, very limited resources invested and can spread the wealth elsewhere..

No need for the nose tackle.

There are 2 Tight Ends i like..

Hayden Hurst at our 2nd Round Pick.
Or Mike Gesicki at our 3nd Round Pick.

Gesicki is lightning fast 4.54 40ty both are seam thread, its time to draft a fast Tight End.

3 deep with players who didn't even play 50% of the defensive snaps
one played 47% of the snaps, another played 38%,and another played
17% of the defensive snaps...Without someone in the middle demanding double teams
it could cause problems with our pass rush which in turn could cause problems
for our secondary. Everything starts from the trenches

It's like ignoring a roof with leaks and remodeling the inside

If we have a weak defensive line it doesn't matter if we have
    3 Luke Kuechly's at linebacker

Try finding the 877 defensive snaps we lost with Suh

Vea wouldn't be the sexy pick. I have him as our pick, too. I don't think we have a shot at anyone transformative, so I haven't really zeroed in on one guy at 11. Talent wise, a lot of guys are kind of grouped in there together. We could go in a lot of different directions and I would be happy. Depending on what we get, I might even be okay with a trade down. There are some guys people have been talking about that they like who are mocked to go at the lower end of round 1 that could be as good as someone we take at 11.

We had a dominant DT for 4 years. It didn't really turn the team around at all.

The Buffalo Bills and NY Jets have had tremendous DL's over the past decade, how many combined playoff appearances?

I get the need for a strong DL, but I also think it is overvalued some.

This is 100% why I don’t think we should take a DT first, anyone we take is likely not going to be as good as Suh and it’s not like he made us a contender.

Phins should just load up on defensive backs and pass rushers. ie Jacksonville

Forgot to mention linebackers. Just all defense with little emphasis on run stuffing DT’s. If we traded down and grabbed a Taven Bryan I wouldn’t be that upset.

Not going to argue that. We might have overpaid for Suh, but he helped us in ways that may not be easy to replace. Taking on regular double teams can wear on a guy, overwhelm them, and cause injuries.

Let me ask this, what would the offense do if they didn't have to double team any of our DT's and the OGs could block their guy one on one?

“No, Davon Godchaux no longer is just a fifth-round draft pick, a rookie with minimal expectations placed upon him.

There’s little chance the Dolphins would have released Suh had it not been for Godchaux’s emergence. Now, it’s up to Godchaux to build on that, and for fellow young defensive tackles Jordan Phillips and Vincent Taylor to make the Dolphins’ cost-cutting move look shrewd.

“Most definitely,” Godchaux said of the extra motivation. “Got to. To replace his shoes, got to. Got to pick up the game. What? Five-time Pro Bowler? Got to pick the game up.”

Cornerback Bobby McCain said he has confidence in the trio.

“It’s big shoes to fill, but we can get it done,” McCain said.

Godchaux appeared in 15 games, starting five. He finished with 40 tackles, a forced fumble and one pass defensed.

“Always can be better,” Godchaux said at the Dolphins Cancer Challenge annual golf tournament at Turnberry Isle to benefit the University of Miami’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. “I think this year you’ll see a lot of improvement each and every day.”

If so, a bit of credit goes to Suh. Godchaux said he learned plenty by observing Suh’s professionalism and getting his advice.

“Taking care of your body — I mean, the guy was a genius at that,” Godchaux said. “Eating the right things. Those things help a lot, especially when you’re in South Florida weather. Just preparing for film study. Picking up on tendencies on offensive linemen.”

Kinda confirms what I was talking about in this post..

You put your skills as an evaluator on the table if your Grier, and you change the dynamics of your cap and how you allocate resources..

Our back seven must be effective tacklers to make this work.

Our pass rush DL will be fine, but our DL vs the run is a very legit concern

I think so, too. Suh was the guy who demanded double teams, and wasn't it our other guys who enjoyed the one on one match ups? Were they consistently able to do anything against the one guy they had? I am sincerely asking. I don't know. I don't have the experience and I don't watch film, but if I were to guess, I would say no. They really didn't make the most of their opportunities. So, now without Suh, aren't we looking at our DT's who can basically be blocked with one guy? If so, won't the offense use the OC/ or OG to block our LBr and run the ball down our throat?

As much as I like Vea and Payne, I feel that a first round DT is just setting that player up for failure. He would immediately be expected (by fans at least) to perform to a Suh level. No, it wouldn't be fair or rational, but you see it all the time with QB picks. So often, the weight of those expectations crushes the kid. I'd look elsewhere to bolster the D in round 1, and either pick up a mid round guy for depth or a vet later on. Adding another top player to the secondary could make us take a leap, as could further bolstering the pass rush.

The DT will still consume a blocker, we just need the LB's to get off blocks and make plays.

Team defense is more important than an ALL Pro player....when was the last time our friends up in Foxboro fielded a top level DT?? Meanwhile the AFCE as much as any division spends big money and high draft picks on DT's...

    I'm done trying that.

Here's where you're messing up with that assumption- we won't ask Godchaux to play the identical role as Suh....because nobody is Suh but Suh. In other words, we won't expect him to fight through double teams and still be able to wrap up a runner; we will have him stunt to one gap or the other and have a LB crashing the 2nd gap. With Suh out there, maybe that LB has a completely different coverage because we expected him to dominate the middle and cover both gaps.......which he didn't always do.

So while you say that it gives the offense an extra blocker, I see it as forcing our defense to assign a defender to every gap and play differently than we have the past three years. And since our defense hasn't been solid anyway, I see that as a potentially good thing to be forced to switch some things up.

Nothing against Suh- he's a pure beast. But I do think we're better off without him and "replacing him" won't be as big a deal as everyone expects. No, we won't have the same animal in the middle anymore but that doesn't mean we will miss it either.

Leighton Vander Esch will most certainly be in the first, if not in the top half. Several teams picking in the 20's have literally cancelled privates with him because they don't expect him to be there at their pick.

Good mock, though two weeks is more than enough to make any mock draft look dated. A couple things have changed.

    • Cleveland almost certainly won't be able to obtain their quarterback and Saquon Barkley due to recent reports. No. 2 looks like his floor.
    • Derwin James is expected to go before Minkah Fitzpatrick, who is actually a candidate to slide into the teens with the rise of Denzel Ward and Jaire Alexander.
    • Baker Mayfield is allegedly locked into the Jets at No. 3 like pen on paper.
    • Roquan Smith's floor is No. 10.
    • Mike Hughes is more of a 2nd-3rd round candidate right now.

The rest looks great! Wouldn't mind Vea at all, though I have a gut feeling he's going to slide into the 20's. More teams like Da'Ron Payne, and there aren't many looking for a pure NT like Vea.

I'll be posting my two-round draft and full Dolphins draft in the coming days. This time of year is like Christmas for me. :D

Considering at one point there was talk of Minkah Fitzpatrick being the first non QB player off the board, what has happened to his draft stock? Not even making the top 10 would have to be seen as a disappointing outcome for him right?

His measurables at the combine were underwhelming, not much of a high level athlete based on his measurables. Also played to much slot in college hasnt really shown the versatility to play high safety. The more you look at his tape the more you see a good but not necessarily great player, hence him probably dropping out of the top 10.

Personally my opinion (which means nothing) is that we are going to take a Linebacker, Defensive Tackle, and Tight End in the first three rounds. I think the best available player out of those three positions is who we will take with each pick. So in regards to our first pick, I definitely think it will be either Smith, Edmunds, or the Vea with that pick. It may not necessarily be who I want us to pick, but I think it will be one of those three. I initially thought QB once the season ended, and my one player that I wish we would draft is Saquan Barkley, but that isn't happening. So, I like the OP's mock, I think it looks like it definitely could go that way.

Could it also be an issue with Alabama players? I'm going to admit laziness and not checking numbers, but it just feels like Bama players don't make the outsized impact in the NFL that they do in college. Could Saban be maxing these guys out to the point where they often have no growth at the NFL while others pass them by?

Yes!!!Vita vea would be a typical stupid pick for this team that I fully expect them to make.
Edmonds, smith, james will probally be gone by pick 11 assuming we don't trade up.I feel Vander Esch or fitz are the best players left on the board.

Did I not call the Arizona trade up for Rosen? Lol

At least we will not have to wonder whether we passed on a qb, all 4 went top 10 and we cant afford to give up more picks to trade up.

There’s only a few players you can make a case for other than Minkah at 11 like Edmunds. Can’t complain, solid pick.
