Any dolphins fans have any fond memories of this idiot?

The Patriots and Steelers will miss you. Good riddance.

There have been a number of notable referees who've retired this offseason and last. I wonder if that's coincidence, or something intentional on the part of the league. A larger percentage of the younger guys will be full time, which hopefully results in better officiated games.

That Pitt game was the worst call I've ever seen against the Dolphins- he literally gave Pitt the game by saying he couldn't see who ended up with possession (after he completely botched the call 30 seconds before that). How about that guy with the ball in his hands that's in his face screaming, "I have the football stupid!"

I know bad calls are a part of the game, but when it clearly decides the winner like that AND it was the wrong call (TWICE!!!), he should have been demoted or fired on the spot. I literally can't stand that guy and it's wonderful that he's finished.

The only thing that would make this story sweeter? If "retiring" meant that the league gave him the option of bowing gracefully out or being tossed out like the garbage he is.

I'm sure his business in Pittsburgh will continue to thrive. I think the NFL cracked down on refs doing games involving cities where the ref had major financial interests AFTER this game ended the way it did.

There's an easy solution to that- hire poor refs! They can even spin it that they're helping combat the unemployment rate in America by giving underprivileged folks a chance.

Thank GOD he's gone. This guy screwed us many many times. There are a few actual pivotal games over the years where he made awful calls that had a great impact on our season. He also seemed to just be head over heels in love with the New England Patriots. The real 12th man in New England.

You guys are NOT going to like this (I personally don't either.. but data is data lol). Out of curiosity I googled Gene Steratore on pro-football-reference just to see if they keep records by ref, and they do!
    https://www.pro-football-reference.com/officials/SterGe0r.htm

    Dolphins were 3-7 under Steratore
Patriots were 18-6 (including 2-2 in the playoffs and 0-1 in the Super Bowl last year against the Eagles!)
    Pittsburgh was 5-6

Of course we need some context here because the Dolphins were generally a losing team while the Patriots were generally a winning team. So let's do a crude statistical analysis to see how likely the results are! (why not right?)

Assuming the probability of winning a game is given by that team's regular season record, and for simplicity assuming we just combine all seasons into one huge season (not technically the right thing to do.. the correct thing to do is simulate each game separately using its own win probability and THEN combine the result.. but I don't want to write that code right now lol and combining things up front shouldn't be too different in the end), you get a win% for this "combined" season of 42.5% for the Dolphins, 78.39% for the Patriots, and 65.34% for Pittsburgh.

Point is.. we're now going to ask how likely it is that a team (the Dolphins) would win at most 3 games out of 10 given an expected 42.5% win%, how likely at most 18 wins out of 24 is for the Patriots given an expected 78.39% win%, and how likely at most 5 wins out of 11 is for Pittsburgh given an expected win% of 65.34%.

    Likelihood for Dolphins = 32.2%
    Likelihood for Patriots = 42%
    Likelihood for Steelers = 14.3%

This means that, to the degree Steratore could influence the outcome, he was most biased against the Steelers.

Steeler fans have disliked him for a long time. He lives in a town about halfway between Pittsburgh and my hometown in WV, where the overwhelming majority of people love the Steelers. You have to admit, it takes some balls to be continually biased against the locals! He's made some really, really bogus calls in favor of the Pats in the games between the two teams.

And when judging referees, as we've talked about in the past, it can't just be about the volume of the penalties. Its the specific context, when the happen, and how likely it is that they should or should not have called them. He sticks out both with the rotten nature of those damning penalties at just the wrong time, and of course his smug attitude in general.

I'm crossing my fingers that the next generation of referees is more subdued, even robotic, and just gets the job done cleanly and without incident. Its of course impossible to know how much Staratore and others have been taking their orders from the NFL office though.

Yeah I think it would be great for the NFL and sports in general if there was a site where fans could review penalties and rate refs. I know there will be some bias in ratings by fans of the teams involved, but with statistics you could detect and then adjust for that bias. That would help get at the context of the penalties too, not just volume. And it would generate really cool stats that currently don't exist!

btw.. according to that link there was only one NE-Steelers game Steradore ref'd, on September 25th, 2005 and he was a field judge not a referee in that game. So I think what Steeler fans think of him probably isn't related to NE.

Maybe so, but he sure wasn't in the one game we have against Pitt with him as the ref. After that hatchet job, the rest of the analysis doesn't matter because we were all heavily biased...and rightfully so. In other words, even if he called those other 9 games completely fair, it wouldn't matter to us since he had already given us reason to despise him.

That Pittsburgh game was one heck of a battle and we hadn't beaten a legit team in quite some time- to me it was more than just a L.

Oh really? Well, that might be the case. I know they ***** about him a lot! One of those things where I was sure I remembered it one way, and it turns out to be another. I think that I might be mixing him up with Tony Corente some of the time. Looking over his stats, I guess he hasn't even done a Steelers game in a long time. Perhaps due to the perceived bias.

I do find it odd that he's been the ref for many Fins/Bills games in recent years, as well as the last two times that the Fins have played the Rams. Those kinds of things can't be random.

Yeah, Steratore had a knack for making the wrong (or controversial) call at some really important moments in the game. Not sure statistically how that compares to others, but it's not just the Miami fumble call. Steratore was behind BOTH the potentially game winning Calvin Johnson catch in 2010 and that famous Dez Bryant catch (overturned) in 2015.

The NFL of course came out and said this.. in 2018 lol:

Good. Even if you don't count his bad officiating, he's still a huge douche canoe.

    Funny story:

I was watching a game a few years ago. I can't remember the teams, but my wife walks in the room (and she never watches football) at the same time Steratore is about to explain a flag. He walks (struts?) out to midfield and does his cringe-worthy speech and motions. My wife stops talking to me mid-sentence and says, "What was that? Why is that douche referee acting that way?" lol.....I told her that's his MO. He thinks he's some sort of a hottie or stud. She just laughed and walked away.

Fun fact, the guy owns a janitorial supply company. He literally sells toilet cleaning supplies. Must be from all that sh!t he constantly spews.

Every time I see him I think of this:
