Hey, just like the old testament then.

As for Christian morals, anyone who needs the promise of a life after death or the threat of burning in a literal hell for eternity to be a good person, is a pretty damned sorry excuse for a human being.

I appreciate this clarifier. It is consistent with what I see coming from news sources more interested in getting some kind of shocking headline rather then letting the actual information come through unmodified.

Well, yes, we do need to name more, because while clearly there were wars that had religion as the prime cause, an objective look at history reveals that those killed in the name of religion have, in fact, been a tiny fraction in the bloody history of human conflict. In their recently published book, “Encyclopedia of Wars,” authors Charles Phillips and Alan Axelrod document the history of recorded warfare, and from their list of 1763 wars only 123 have been classified to involve a religious cause, accounting for less than 7 percent of all wars and less than 2 percent of all people killed in warfare. While, for example, it is estimated that approximately one to three million people were tragically killed in the Crusades, and perhaps 3,000 in the Inquisition, nearly 35 million soldiers and civilians died in the senseless, and secular, slaughter of World War 1 alone.

History simply does not support the hypothesis that religion is the major cause of conflict. The wars of the ancient world were rarely, if ever, based on religion. These wars were for territorial conquest, to control borders, secure trade routes, or respond to an internal challenge to political authority. In fact, the ancient conquerors, whether Egyptian, Babylonian, Persian, Greek, or Roman, openly welcomed the religious beliefs of those they conquered, and often added the new gods to their own pantheon. Not if we all keep our wits about us... Including me!
Being a military history afficianado as well as a (now retired) ordained minister seems a rather odd concatenation of mental exertions... but.. From what I have read, I concur with danmarino... almost all of the wars have had as their root an egotistical leader parading an economic base before the populace (either his or the one he wished to subjugate.) Even Hitler started his attempt at world domination seeking 'lebensraum' (I believe it is spelled) for the Aryan race. That was a bit of a fabrication (ahem!) on his part - but it became the same which has led to most wars - personal power of a tyrant seeking a tyrant's version of grandeur - domination and raw power.

Hello Group. I too was banned from FH, not for spewing any of my beliefs but, a billing snafu involving Paypal and a cancelled credit card.
I won't go into it. Another board that I was on closed down and hasn't re-opened. So, here I am claiming squatters rights. Mother Nature be praised. I've been a Phins fan since 71 and currently live in Costa Rica.

I would hope that any and all are welcome here... I would also hope that Politics and religion be separate and kept off of the main Dolphins Page.

I am not even remotely religious and it is cool that you are... Neither of us has to talk about any of that on the Dolphins forum

I got banned on Phin Heaven because I spelled the F word Fook.... LOL

I got notified by one of the lesser moderators that I was being demerited 6 points for avoiding their filter. If I got to ten I was going to be banned a month.

I sent a reply asking if I was also on double secret probation? ( Animal house reference. ) I immediately got a message from the super moderator... I then asked him if he also needed to step in and finish the other guy's meals and take care of his wife after he was done.

    I got banned... LMAO

They are extremely uptight over there. There are a few good posters and traffic is high... But they think a lot of themselves and they do not like anyone rocking their boat or questioning them.

It has been great posting here.... No Drama....
This site has great Dolphin posters also!

    Dan,

You are forgetting one very important thing. From the time of the Dark ages until only recently the Entire continent of Europe was owned by the Church.... Papal Lands. They picked Kings to rule in their name basically across the continent. But peasants were serfs and the Church owned the whole damned thing. So for example... The crusades... 100 percent Religious

The other aspect of it is that the church had no issue invoking God's name or whatever to have the poor peasants die for their bank accounts. For example... poor grain farmers from England dying in what is now Turkey because so called savages were desicrating the birthplace of their saviour ( Or whatever version of the story they were spinning. ) Fact of the matter is that religion has long been used as a tool to get people to fight and die. It does not matter that the end result was a new trade route or more territory... Religion was the method of delivery to get people to fight for their cause.

In the civil war in the USA... In the south ... It was told over and over that it was god's will that the white man reigned over the inferior negro race... That is almost a direct quote from the person that created the confederate flag William Thompson back in 1863... He ran full page ads talking about and promoting what would become the confederate flag.

Here is one such direct quote from his newspaper

"As a people, we are fighting to maintain the Heaven-ordained supremacy of the white man over the inferior or colored race; a white flag would thus be emblematical of our cause" .... May 4th 1863

Religion has been used over and over more than everything else combined for war.

While technically land or assets were being fought over... It has almost always been in the name of the church and for religious reasons ( As far as the people that have to fight and die are concerned. )

Damn! This one had me choking on my coffee! LOL!

Be careful with the word workarounds because they go by the book here, too. I was in the Navy and when I talk sports I like to use colorful language. It's taken a while, but I think I have learned to tone it down. :couch: No hard feelings toward the mods. They are just doing their job and I should be better about it. No doubt this is a cool forum. Good people here! You are, too! You bring a lot to the forum and I enjoy reading your posts and insight!

Politics is a no no. We don’t need posters bickering over R/D etc. We do football here. There’s a religion forum if you want and we have a site chaplain (Ohiophinphan) and The Rev who both do the lords work. We also ask that you let the filter do it’s job as Surfs Up mentioned.

Always good to have active new members. Welcome. :ffic:

Let me offer a short poem to clarify my view on religion.

    Roses are redish.
    Violets are bluish.
    If it wasn't for Jesus,
    "You all" would be Jewish!

I threw in a little "Southern" talk to be "inclusive" and because I live in NC - LOL

Just my "hysterical" take on modern religion - LOL

To prove I'm a man of great faith, here is my prediction for the Dolphins this season:

Somewhere between an 11W-6L season and a 17W-1L season!

If we go 17-1, there will still be posters complaining it wasn't a perfect season - LOL

How's that for a man of faith and getting back on topic in the same post - LOL

Welcome, my 2004 account got banned around the time I joined this place, by some Gestapo mod with a 2010 account, over a simple difference of opinion. These things happen when the moderation goes unchecked.
