Not including QB, what position is priority this off-season?

Is it too early to ask? For me, it's not. When we play like we played today I can't help thinking about what I would do to rebuild our team. What position should be a priority this off-season? I can make a case for DE, DT, OG, OC, and LB. What about you? What would your strategy be to get us back on track?

Me? I would start with rebuilding the trenches. In the draft, not including taking a franchise QB, in round 1, I would start with best available between DE, DT, or a 3 down LB. Then in round 2 I would go best available between OG or OC. You?

DT or DE. If we get that right we could have a great defense next year.

Question- how is Vea doing this season? A lot of folks thought we'd take him instead of Minkah and I'm glad we didn't, but we sure do need some help on that D line.

My mock draft priority would be- WR or CB 1st, D line 2nd, whoever's left out of WR/CB 3rd and O line 4th. We need one Parker-like receiver and if a stud is there in the first, take him. If not, go corner and then shore up the trenches.

  8. WR. QB obviousl;y like you said but now that parker's career as a Dolphin is over after what his gaent did in the press today, we will definitely need at least WR over 4 feet tall. And LB, DT, DE, TE, and OL also.

I mean, it's QB. Without better QB play we are just treading water.

We have needs pretty much everywhere, but got to settle QB first. More assets on both lines, LB and CB could all be useful.

Our QB's (plural) have been putting up top 10 numbers this season...we're not losing because of the quarterbacks except in RT's meltdown against Cinci. That's one game out of seven. Yet teams have run all over us for 5 of the 7 weeks....to me that's a much bigger problem.

We have the starters. Now it's just a matter of drafting the backups behind them and building some depth so we can survive injuries

Disagree. The QBs are not bringing enough to the table to compete with the real challengers.

Without that type of QB you need a complete, deep and lucky team. We dont have any of that.

Need to try again on QB. The NFL is making it clear - they want points, offense and QB play. We need to embrace that and do better.

Yeah, that was my first thought. The Gase/Tanny combo was either going to work this year -or it would be time to rebuild. It is ALMOST too late to save this season, so if Tanny misses significant time again, or Gase can't get his offense on track even with Tanny back, then I feel like we have reached the end of the Gase era in Miami.

That doesn't mean that Ross won't give them both another year though.

I don't disagree....but the question was "What do we need most?" Brock played good enough to win today, but we had nobody to throw to and didn't really attack the field. That's never 100% on the QB and he's not the #1 problem at the moment.

If our defense had a guy like Luke or Sean lee, we would be elite defensively.

Just like you have to find Dan’s successor, you have to find Zach’s too.

Without a doubt he goes one more year and I think that’s the terms of his contract a 4 year deal and than he walks. Ross is just as incompetent as an owner as Gase is a coch

A stud MLB would have the biggest impact on this season. Getting a true X receiver in the offseason would be nice.

Only a few of you came close to the target but no one has outright said it.

Number one priority this offseason is finding the Dick Lebeau or Wade Phillips of defensive coordinators. Many of you keep bringing up talent. We have the talent on defense. Now all that ship needs is a captain to steer it and Matt Burke isn’t it.

If we don’t get a premiere DC in the offseason, might as well hang it up. It won’t matter if we had an offense that scores 30 points a game, if we can’t stop our opponents, what good will it do?

I don't mean to be antagonistic here cause you're a cool dude, but this type of comment is basically a ticket to continue the mediocrity. I want a QB who elevates the team, instead of needing to have the team elevate him just to give us a shot. It's been decades of "if we just get X we can win!" That X isn't OL, DL, CB, LB, K or whatever, it's QB.

For this season, it is what is. For next season, we need a new direction. And at this point, barring a major turnaround, that includes Gase as well as THill and Brock.

But thats a genetic defect for this team at this point. I don't think there is a cure.

I think you're right, just haven't seen it be an issue for this or the last few management groups. Haven't had a focus on the D since Saban.

I also think we have 75% of the talent and the right coach can make up the balance and add the difference.

That's where we must start...I've already put out a list of potential candidates.

But by no means am I in the know of who all is available...but its painfully obvious that Gase is not the answer.

For me, I'd bring in Jim Schwartz. His teams are hard...the Fins under Gsse are like hot butter.

Same defense, and we already know we have to revamp the offense, regardless.

I wish. However, Saints gave up a 3rd for Teddy. Id assume they will offer him a good amount to stay. Even if they didn't, Tannehill can't be cut this off season pretty much, so if they add a QB, you'd probably expect it to be in the draft, with the thoughts that RT is the starter next year and a young guy can sit and learn behind him. Which I wouldn't mind.

For me it has to be linebacker. Watching the game live and in person yesterday, I can honestly say they are lost on 90% of the plays. They over-persue on run plays , fail to shed blocks, and have no idea what to do in coverage. The lb core is supposed to support your defensive line and these guys don’t, they just run around clueless and get lucky if the play comes their direction.

Sometimes that happens - perfect seasons are rare for a reason. But, having Brock/Thill is not helping. Over the course of a season, a QB like Rogers, Brees, Brady ... they lift their teams, they steal wins, they shut the door. I mean, the GB defense is garbage, yet Rogers still drags the Packers to wins. The KC defense is garbage, yet Mahomes has 22 TDs and they are 5-1. A spectacular offense can absolutely help negate defensive flaws. Whether that is getting out to early leads and dictating the game or keeping the score close enough to strike late, that's what the best QBs do. We don't, and haven't since Dan.

I'm just tired of the "If only we could get an X we can win with mediocre QB Y." I want a QB that wins games, not a QB we can potentially win with if everything else falls into place.

Tanny has a $26 million cap hit in 2019, with a dead cap of $13 million, so we'd be gaining $13 million in cap space by trading/cutting him. If he is still injured, I doubt we find a team willing to trade with the cap hit he has. Maybe if he signed an extension, but we need to assume we get nothing for Ryan except some cap room.

The Saints either wanted Bridgewater to keep the train rolling if Brees got hurt this season, or they want him to take over if this is the last season for Drew. I see no sign of Brees falling off though, so I don't see how they can afford to keep both QBs in 2019.

If I knew that Tanny was likely DONE for this season (anything around a 50/50 chance) with that shoulder, I make a trade this year. Let Oz play a few more weeks while Teddy learns the offensive system. It won't save this season, but Gase would have a solid QB to run his offense for 2019 and he would have some real game experience in it. That gives Gase a more than fair shot for success in 2019 and if he fails you let a new GM/Coach decide who to keep for 2020.

Now, Bridgewater might be happy to sit another season behind Drew, with the promise of taking over in 2020 under a really good offensive minded coach. It won't hurt to ask though.

I would love to bring in either of the Ryan brothers as a coordinator, but I do especially love Rex's fire and arrogance. He has people believing they can run thru walls and he schemes ways to make it happen. Maybe he's not a top candidate but we could do a heck of a lot worse. He got a heck of a lot out of a mediocre Jets team...they messed up letting him walk.

I think the optimal path forward is to build up the defense as a unit and bank on selecting a QB down the road in 2020 or beyond. The offense got a lot of attention last year, but I think that experiment is done. I want to see a serious commitment to defense over the next year or two involving retaining the guys we have and adding new pieces where they're badly needed.

Before you get to selecting defensive prospects you have to decide your scheme. That's going to dictate what you need. Scheme will have major ramifications for someone like Kiko Alonso who's a tremendous asset as a attacking LB moving downhill towards the LOS but also a noticeable liability in coverage. In one scheme he's great. In another, he's being exposed. And most teams aren't throwing multiple rookie LBs on the field as the Fins are with McMillan and Baker. I think those guys will grow in understanding their responsibilities.

The secondary has Howard (who should be locked up this off-season) along with Jones, Fitzpatrick, and McCain. You need an outside CB opposite Howard so maybe that's your R1 pick? That position (CB) is always a candidate given the athletic requirements and depth needed in the NFL.

Now, if I'm being real, the D-line has become a mess with the injuries it's sustained this year. But these injuries have merely exposed the fact it was such a thrown-together unit anyhow IMHO. Where is the young talent? I see DT Vincent Taylor out-performing his rookie contract and DE Jonathan Woodard flashing some potential but that's really it. Godchaux and Malveaux are merely solid at this stage. Branch is somewhat reliable and he's 29 so he's something (if you can get his price down).

However, Harris is a complete bust as of now. Hayes got hurt, but at 33 years old it's not as though that outcome wasn't a significant possibility. Quinn was a gamble that started well but is now looking less impressive. Wake is 36 years old, fighting a knee issue and unlikely to be particularly effective week-in, week-out.

Fact is, DE is a critical (sometimes game-changing) position for NFL defenses and Miami is getting very little production from it. A lot of the blame goes to Harris here. If you have a rising R1 talent coming into form, this all looks A LOT BETTER. But Harris is providing zilch right now and in tandem with losing core guys, well...it's a mess.

So I think Miami goes back to the well at DE if they're high enough to select a top product.

DE- Wake is about done, we never get near the opposing. Horrible contract handed to Branch. Missing hayes
CB- Need someone opposite X, keep Bobby in slot Minka at FS (Horrible contract handed to TJ Howard)
I would use free agency and some of the Tannehill money for another guard and a DT
I assume Wilson and Stills back so we should be fine at wr
Hope Ballage can play so we dont use a pick at RB, and hope Gesicki and Smythe become players so we don't need a TE

No on TE. Our rookies haven't been doing much, but TE is one of the hardest spots to have an impact on as a rookie. We just have to hope they are acclimating and will make the jump that many do in Y2.

    http://www.espn.com/blog/nflnation/...-tight-ends-struggle-to-make-immediate-impact

I said it before the season - if we were relying on on rooks to come in and have big impacts, we were chasing fool's gold.
