Yes, for two reasons. (1) I haven't seen enough consistency at QB/line to know who Gase really is. Give me one more full season with Gase/Tannehill/1st string line. Give this young defense one more season to see what we really have. Then blow it all up in 2020 if we're not a playoff team at that point. (2) I have little faith in Ross picking a winner the next time around. Philbin was a terrible choice...and Dan Campbell had our guys playing awesome smash-mouth football. Campbell did enough IMO to deserve a full season....that makes Ross 0-2. If you think Gase isn't the guy, then Ross is 0-3. How can you have any faith that coach #4 will be any better? I have more faith in Gase at this point than I do in Ross making the right choice.
That's the problem- it doesn't matter who his preference is because it won't be Ross's preference. He will ask his friends and form a consensus from their opinions....I don't want Ross's friends deciding our next five years as a team.
DC's Vic Fangio and James Bettcher from the NFL, and DC's Brett Venables and Don Brown from the NCAA.
I wish Ross would sell the team as long as they keep it in miami! He is a terrible owner despite the fact he spends money He has no clue what he is doing.
Right now ... no. He can change my mind, but as of now, I just haven't seen enough. Gameplans are often messy and insufficient. We seem to get outcoached a lot. We consistently start slow. Injuries on offense are hurting us, but he has failed to properly address QB. Defensively ... yikes. Sticking with Burke was a mistake. Locker room/team dysfunction. Little in the way of on-field results after the first season. Yes, again, injuries, I get it. But just in him being a coach, I haven't really seen progress. Him putting together an impressive slate of games here could change my mind. I'm not itching to fire him. I won't gnash my teeth if he is back (though if we are stuck with THill again, ffs), but I really don't see a strong "need" to keep on.
Why defense vs. offense? Would there be any offensive minded candidates you would consider? And do you not think going from NCAA coordinator to NFL HC might be too big of a leap and too big of a culture change?
voted yes, but he needs to make changes at, at least DC. Gase is the only HC ross hired that was his #1 option. Remember ross's # 1 before was jeff fisher and he obviously had no back up plan so we got philbin.
Defensive emphasis is just my philosophy. Offense is easy, and has every advantage tilted their way. I don't view the jump to the NFL as too big, but, as you pointed out, culture change is the biggest hurdle.
For people criticizing Ross, exactly what do you think is the difference between him and most any other owner? Imo, there are a few truly godawful owners, but what specifically makes anyone think Ross doesnt possess as much "knowledge" as any other owner or frankly as much as we do? Like, we can hate on Tannenbaum, but the dude is an NFL insider. And ultimately, if he doesnt produce, he will be gone.
There are several "types" of owners. Joe Robbie came to work every day, talked with coaches and players then actually ran the team from a leadership role. Ross, on the other hand, stops by every now and then to show his business clients what a great atmosphere Joe Robbie stadium is. He's about as hands-off as an owner can get and relies on his contacts for what to do. We say great, Ross is willing to invest in the Dolphins....but the only reason he did that was to protect his business investment. Maybe he pouts a little when the Dolphins lose but he has nothing to do with us winning either. He paid $1B for the team and it's estimated "worth" is $2.38 billion. The way approval for the sale goes, maybe he clears $2.5B. We could go 5-11 or 11-5 and the value would pretty much be the same (unless we went deep in the playoffs). Think about that for a moment- even with the stadium upgrades, Ross will earn 1+ BILLION DOLLARS on top of his 9-years of profits for what he's done in Miami. How could that not piss any sane fan off?
I don't think the renovations increased the worth as much as he paid. IMO, he did it for the one reason to actually own a football team. Legacy and fame. Unless you are a specific type person, Ross was a nobody. Yes he had billions of dollars, but the average person, he was old rich guy. Owner of the Dolphins who paid for renovations. Now he is famous with prestige. The real value of a NFL franchise is prestige. The Dolphins like any other football team is a famous oil painting.
Well, the franchise value went up by 1.5B in the past 9 years....the Panthers just sold for 2.2 and the next club to sell will eclipse that. It's estimated value in Miami is 2.38 and Ross spent 500M on the renovations. That still leaves almost 900M profit if he sold for face value....which he won't do. He already has a "succession owner" approved by the league to get the first bid (that happened in 2016). It wasn't the renovations themselves that boosted the value that much...that's just what teams are selling for. He did it though to host future super bowls and major events....it was necessary either way. I agree with you though- it's a "look at me" thing. Well, I looked and he's still funny looking with those big goofy ears.
I want Gase to stay unless someone like Harbaugh or Fangio wants the job. I'm also interested in Lincoln Riley out of OK...
Most importantly, I want our next HC to be someone who has done the job before at the NFL level. Our last five head coaches have all been rookies at the NFL level. It hasn't worked. I'm tired of watching guys learn on the job.
I want Gase and Tannehill to stay. I blame the injuries. Three years in a row of being top 12 in injuries is a curse but one that can't go on forever. I suspect the first year we have a relatively healthy dolphin team is the year we storm through the league. I think he's built a good foundation. Now he needs the opportunity to showcase it. I would bring in an exorcist before I brought in a new coach
Yeah, we could have paid a billion dollars a week for Gruden and end up 2-8 like the Raiders. People should be careful what they wish for.
Not that I wanted Gruden, but the Raiders clearly have a plan to bottom out and then build from the ground up in Vegas. Given the state of that team and its roster, had I taken it over I'd have done the same thing.
At first I felt bad for Gase having his future tied to Tannehill but he seems to want RTH so I don’t know. I think we’ve been plagued with injuries and Gase has at least got us to the playoffs. I’d be interested in seeing one more year. Wish it was with a good QB
tell nick saban that it's easy to go from college to pros... LOL it's not easy at all. it's a way different beast. If youre a SEC coach going to the NFL, yourNFL players are paid less, and they can't roid up.
So you want him to be Jerry Jones? I don't really get what people exactly want from Ross. Hes a checkbook really, and that's all you need or expect. I get the feeling that most "great" owners are so via revisionist history and luck. Football is such a crapshoot in terms of coaching hires, player drafting, development, injuries, etc. If say THill didn't get injured, we beat Pitt in the playoffs and went back last year and were looking to compete this year? People would be saying hes great. You want a bad owner, look around at the examples out there. Haslem and Snyder immediately rise up. Jerry Jones. Some are literal criminals. Some are overly meddlesome. Some are both. It just seems pointless to ***** about a dude who spends money on his team, because hes the one guy you really have no ability to fire. The value of the franchise rose because the value of the league rose though. Watch what the SeaHawks go for.
For the record I want Gase to stay at least another year barring a late season meltdown from this team. Previous squads didn't handle adversity well. Gase has weeded out those selfish types that don't put the team first.
Personally, I want an owner that's involved with the team enough that he can make intelligent decisions on the staff, players, etc. For instance, some of you here say "Fire Gase" while others say "Gase is great." Who's right and who's wrong? We really have no idea because we don't see what Gase does, how he works with staff/players, etc. All we see is what happens on the sidelines and that is very little of what a head coach does....we are 100% unqualified to say whether Gase is a problem or an asset. We can't know what we don't know. However, Ross is equally as unqualified because he's just a fan like us. He gets reports from people trying to keep their job and then solicits advice from people not even in the organization....which means they're not qualified to give an opinion either. Can you see where I'm going with this? Imagine getting fired at work because your company's owner had a conversation with his neighbor's friend...which acted like he knew everything there was to know about what you do. That's how we pick head coaches and GM's folks....and that sucks for many different reasons. I want an owner that takes enough of a personal interest that he's not making decisions through third parties. Maybe it's not his job, per se, but he has to be in the building sometimes and actually trying to help sort through the bureaucracy of NFL football.
Both Harbaughs might be out of a job after this season if things continue they way they are at Ohio State today.
Unprecedented move..Ross hires both harbaughs to run the franchise Brothers dominate NFL in the future..
After watching jim harbaugh get blown out and go 0-4 against ohio state. No thanks! His offence is from the 1970s.
You'll quite probably get your wish. I'm not so sure Gase should be betting on Tanny to stay healthy for a season though OR that he'll make that leap in the Gase offense we've hoped to see these past couple years. If Gase wanted to draft a rookie QB to develop, I'd actually be okay with giving him two more years, with maybe a third year based on how the rookie did in year two (and how the rest of the team looked for that matter -trending up or still inconsistent?). If Gase wants to live or die with Tanny at QB though? He gets only 2019 to prove it can work.
Luke Falk, our 6th round draft pick (that we didn't spend a pick on). That's the best answer at someone to groom....including the 2019 draft.
I pulled a draft report on Luke Falk out of curiosity. If this proves to be fairly accurate, Luke really just need some time to develop physically along with learning to play the game at the Pro level. Experience, in a word. Some things like accuracy you really can't coach into a guy, they just have it or they don't. You can help them with decision making though. At this point, just getting Falk developed enough to be a reliable #2 QB would be a win for Miami. It would be amazing to see him turn into a good starter. Strengths: Accurate Above-average arm strength Good ball placement Touch passer Enough arm to make all the throws in the NFL Rhythm passer Pocket presence Good timing Anticipation Will throw into tight windows Deadly red-zone passer Weaknesses: Can have issues reading the field Will throw into coverage Thin frame Needs to add weight Lacks escapability Lacks mobility Will need to learn working under center Will need to learn calling plays in the huddle Read more: http://walterfootball.com/scoutingreport2018lfalk.php#ixzz5XqPGhvs3
I watched a good bit of film on him pre-draft since Miami met with him several times (more than we met with any other QB). There was also a quote from Gase saying that he might be the most complete passer in the draft...this was months before the draft arrived. He set so many PAC 12 passing records it's almost impossible to list them all. If you watch his pre-season tape for the Titans, he really didn't make many mistakes. Ball placement was solid and he looked really good in the pocket. I know pre-season doesn't mean anything but I think he's a really good prospect- a lot of folks compare his play to Tom Brady (ironically, they were both drafted 199th overall as well). Here's his college highlight video threading passes all over the field...the accuracy/release is very impressive but he also has a lot of poise as well-
I think its interesting how the poll results don't show the overwhelmingly negative narrative I so often see around. Of course its an EXTREMELY small sample size but still.
That's why I left it open until LATE april and allowed for people to change their votes. If this thread has any legs, the results of this poll could be vastly different come January.
