Wow.. IF they pull this off, then Ross, Grier and co. deserve massive credit. Getting that franchise QB solves a ton of problems and I'd only have respect for them if they implemented a longer term plan to rebuild this franchise waiting to get a top QB prospect in 2020. Still have to get the right HC though. We'll see if Flores is the answer (have to let the guy coach a game first before judging however!).
The goal every year should be strengthening the trenches for every team. That's hardly a philosophy...it's common sense. Upgrading the line doesn't equal tanking either...it's using common sense. We know we can win with Tannehill behind a solid line.....can anyone name a single reason why that shouldn't be a priority whether we keep RT or not?
Kay but who stays and who goes for the dolphins offensive line.. because we got two average tackles and no guards worth a damn. We cant get rid of all and juwuan is looking for money this offseason.
Unless a guy like Will Grier falls on our laps or if the front office makes a move for Foles/Wentz, Tannehill is the starter next year. I think he is at 70% chance if returning.. and im not a fan, but it what it is..
I totally agree with this, it's just never been the Dolphin way to use the common sense approach. Not in recent years anyway...
Round 1 - Michael Dieter, 6'6", 310, LG, Wisconsin (Big 10 Offensive Lineman of the Year) Round 2 - Beau Benzschawel, 6'6", 315, RG, Wisconsin (First team All American) Round 3 - David Edwards, 6'7", 315, RT, Wisconsin (Big 10 All Second Team) Let Jawuan James walk. Get rid of Tannehill (cut or trade...I dont give a damn) . Use the cap savings to build the defense. Sign either Tyrod Taylor or Teddy Bridgewater or both to one year deals. 2019....get your quarterback.
I would like for them to sign Bridgewater. If they can't, then the next best available vet If there is a stud OG or C when we pick, draft him ..or if there is a stud NT available when we pick, take him. Need to try to get an upgrade at DE. Hopefully we can get a steal in the 2nd or third round. IMO, that would be a good start. Take that Bridge until the year after and unless we really suck, sell the farm next year for a QB?
Finally they appear ready to invest in the lines! Good grief I'm in love with Grier already! I disagree that we have two average Tackles and I think we should lock James up just so we don't need to expend more draft capital to replace him. Trade Thill for whatever you can get and draft Easton Stick at qb in the middle rounds. May be able to develop him and at worst should make a competent backup.
Yeah he didn't impress in that game but there is another year of tape coming on him so we will get a better look.
While it's okay to put a high priority on building the trenches, the highest priority of them all has to be QB. So, IMO, if you're at 13 and a QB you like falls to you, you take him. Or if a QB you like falls to a range that you can trade up to (without having to sell the farm) you also do that. I'm still of the opinion that in the first round we should aim for either a top QB on our board or a trade down involving future picks. If you do that every single year, you're eventually guaranteed either a top QB or enough picks to trade up for a top QB.
I would not be shocked if this was all a smokescreen to hide interest in a QB this year. We apparently were scouting around guys like Herbert (though he went back) during the college season. I keep going back to the idea that although there are not tons of "elite" prospects like last year, we also do not see the DEMAND of teams like the last few years - so many new QBs have entered the league in the last 3-4 years. Ahead of us, you see the Giants at 6 and Jags at 7 and Broncos at 10 as teams that might look for upgrades, though even then it's not guaranteed. Giants have a hard-on for Eli, Jags are reportedly looking at vets (like Flacco) and Broncos could stick with Keenum. If the opportunity to grab a guy you like (Murray, Haskins, Jones imo) comes up at either 13 or as a low cost trade, do it this year. We still have the rest of our picks and FA to address the lines. If not, then fine, stand pat and take the best line talent that you get in your spot or trade back to stock picks.
If you have an established offensive line, you can sell the farm for a QB but if your OL sucks balls, you can get that QB and he’s going to be running for his life!!! Luck was fortunate to have an already established line in Indy... Brees actually had a good OL in NO Brady fell into a good OL Marino, Montana, Kelly...all of the great QBs we’re fortunate enough to be drafted by teams with established OL Without that line, I don’t care who your QB is, he’s not going to do well
Disagree. Look, we've been going down the "fix the OL" road for over a decade already. If Tannehill taught us anything it's that it doesn't matter if you invest first round pick after first round pick on OL, if your QB isn't good enough, it won't matter. A good OL is hard to build and even harder to sustain... a QB with good pocket presence and mobility will mask OL deficiencies. Priority one: find a damn QB!
What if Tua doesn't come out next year? There has been talk that his family really want him to graduate. This next season, if Kyler declares, I'd get him and let him sit behind Falk. If Kyler doesn't declare and goes MLB, get one of the top DT's in the 1st or trade down for more picks. Draft some o-line, d-line, and more DB's. And try to get someone like Easton Stick in the 3rd... In 2020 I'd give Kyler (or Easton) the reigns. If either one fails, you can draft Tua or Lawrence in 2021.
Tannehill looked fine when our offensive line was healthy/blocking well in his career overall though. If anything our line shows why early round picks are important. Our two tackles were our only performers....both taken in the first.
These don't need to be exclusionary in any way. Let's say we draft Haskins with our 13th pick. That leaves quite a few other picks to try and address OL, plus free agency. Yeah this is why I wonder if we are already blowing smoke out on the water here while really targetting someone. It probably also sets expectations for fans somewhat too. Like, if we end up with Haskins they can still say they are going with a longer timetable so that he doesn't get rushed onto the field. Let him sit for awhile before he takes over halfway or longer into the season. If we don't target someone in the first though, I would be all on trading down and/or out of the first entirely to stack 2020 picks. Can do a lot of later round navigating as well. Get a few 2s or 3s. I wouldn't bother with a QB at all if we don't take one early, especially if we sacrifice picks this year for next. Just draft some beef.
Exactly! Thankfully I think Ross and co. understand this, especially after the dreadful "no way out of mediocrity" Tannehill experience. Also worth noting that the NFL has once again reminded us of which QB's tend to make it deep in the playoffs: Mahomes, Brees, Brady and Goff are the ones left. So whatever it takes, however hard it is, you have to prioritize getting a franchise QB or you're left trying to win the SB with one of the least likely to work strategies. And to underscore the point, Vegas thinks these upcoming games will be an offensive slugfest: over/under are right now at 57 and 57.5 for the two games.
I'd try to get him this year. Test him out, if he fails try again in 2021. And if he succeeds .. the long wait till relevance is over!
If it's his true love you are right. Otherwise I don't see it as a big deal. It's not like baseball is guaranteed success for him, he could fail at it just as easily. He should just choose whatever his passion is, if he says its football take him. If he fails and leaves...he failed, that doesn't hurt us really.
He wouldn't really unless it's just not going well at all. In that case, we likely will be picking early in either 2020 or 2021, both of which could have some good prospects coming out. He's worth the gamble athletically. http://www.espn.com/nfl/draft2019/s...sooners-qb-enters-nfl-draft-72-hours-withdraw He's in! ... For now ...
Here’s what “you guys” are going to want in the draft. Draft a QB in the first round. You all have had it with Tannehill. Then you’re going to want a LB. so many of you have complained about Alonso. Then you’re going to want a DB because of the potential situation with Jones. By then, any worthwhile OL will be long gone. The reason we have been addressing the offense of line for over a decade is because we have not been addressing the offense of line. Until we have a SOLID OL, our offense is going to be mediocre
Except for maybe a bonafide position like LT, I think OL should be addressed by good coaching and lots of mid/low round picks. It's smarter to do it that way than use 1st or 2nd rounders on the OL sacrificing top talent at skill positions. And there are a lot of teams that have successfully built strong OL without spending lots of resources on it. We have to copy that mold.
Lol teams find good linemen in the mid to low rounds all the time. Not to mention FA. LB is a need, but I wouldn't rate it above the OL. Nor would I reach for a DB. If a quarterback is available, you get him. Its really as simple as that.
If you're tanking anyway, then bring in Colin Kaepernick. Seriously, that makes us the media darling for the season, it sells tickets and it puts the Fins on the right side of history. And if we win, then so be it....there's literally no downside.
In theory sure, but he won't play another down. If we really wanted to win, we would have picked him up over Cutler years ago. Gase would probably still be a coach with him.
I agree that Tannehill looked pretty good when our OL was healthy and blocking well. That's the thing, though, if you need 5 good OL to be available and healthy at all times in order for you to succeed, you're gonna have a hard time in this league. This is coming from a Tannehill fan, by the way. He has had some great moments in Miami, but his weaknesses are too hard to ignore and make it extremely difficult to win consistently with.
